Austria/Hungary is a good country to play as long as you can survive the early years. It has (statistically) the highest chance of being eliminated early of all the countries. However, if it survives beyond the first few years, it's chance of survival (and even victory) increase significantly.
Italy is an interesting one. It's supposed to be one of the most difficult countries to win with and yet it, in my opinion, holds the balance of power. With most games seperating off into two areas of contention: 1) arond the low countries with England, France and Germany. 2) around the balkans with Austria, Russia and Turkey. It seems to me that Italy has the power to enter either fray and bring success to whomever he decides to ally with.

Italy's chances of winning are directly related to a positve
relationship between Russia and Turkey.
The only country with no reason to like/dislike the Turks is
France. They always get their asses kicked anyway, so who
cares?

I have a technical question - say you want to move into an unoccupied territory, and an opponent also does. This would result in a 'bounce'. However, can you support a move into an unnoccupied zone, to force out an opposition grab in the same turn? Or are support orders only valid for offensive moves?
Following on from that, what happens when you support a move into an occupied zone, and the opposition moves out simultaneously, thus leaving it empty?

A move is a move is a move. It becomes offensive if the move happens to bring that unit into conflict with another unit. So, the answer to your question is: yes, you can support a unit moving into an unoccupied zone (certain terms and condictions apply of course).Quote:

No, the convoying fleet cannot simultaneously support the unit it is convoying. However, the convoyed army may be supported by another fleet (that isn't doing anything else).Quote:

Note: Don't forget that a unit can only support another unit if it could have otherwise moved to the target zone in question. i.e. An army cannot support a fleet moving to an ocean province because armies can never move into ocean provinces.

The really decisive factor was when the Italians joined the war on the side of the English/French and invaded Austria/Hungary and brought about the collapse of their empire.
The American participation did help ease the stalemate in France however.
