so now I know how many pins my P4 has got, how can I tell if it's the 'B' variant?
It's got 478B stamped onto the socket...478 is clearly the pins, is the B relating to the P4 B bit or is that coincidence?
I got this machine in Sept 01 if that helps...

The B version runs on a 133/533 FSB, whereas yours runs at 100/400....
The B version just came out...

b) I counted the pins, there were 478: (26x26) - (14x14) - 2 = 478
c) it says 478 on the socket

I'm looking for an ATX midi/mini tower (anything other than full tower basically) which is black and has kinda funky silver/grey bits, so it looks as similar to this Dell case as possible, if that's not asking too much ;). Don't mind if it comes with PSU as long as it's 300W+
Oh and the mobo, I don't care...as long as it's based on the i845D with a 478 (:p) socket
Price ranges, well I guess the cheapest that fits the requirements is good enough ;)

845D is outdated, 845E is what you're going to get.... ;)
You can get it with alot of features, or not... You want USB2.0, firewire, etc.?

I found a really nice looking black one with a 340w power supply, but it was about £75 plus VAT, probably not what you want to spend :(
Kal is right, get the 845E, it is a performance chipset with the USB 2.0 also.
Kal, did you find him a motherboard? See if Gigabyte has anything good, they tend to have some great stuff if you're looking for additional features. If he just wants a board with no additional features he should go with an Abit...pure speed, no onboard stuff (Except RAID in some cases)

845E includes USB 2.0...845G and 845GL also include it but they have integrated graphics...either 845G or GL, I forget which one, doesn't have an AGP slot so clearly you'll want to avoid that one..Quote:

Second one down...you might want to call them up and see if that power supply is Pentium 4 compatible (P4s require compatible PSUs for 12 volt leads..)

That's pretty decent. It says "heavy duty 340W Antec PSU - approved by AMD and Intel" and "Intel P4 & AMD K7 MP Dual CPU approved" so i'm guessing it's alright
But, where are the drive bays?!

The board is the same ATX size 305mm, the only reason why it only has 4 PCI is because it has so many onboard components there wasn't enough physical space to fit a 5th and 6th PCI.

BTW, as if you really need any more cost, you will probably need a new heatsink too, since as opposed to using a NORMAL heatsink, Dell chooses to use a passive heatsink with a 92mm fan (or is it 80mm?) mounted to the back of the case cooling the heatsink with a duct. Don't worry about what brand, etc, just get the cheapest thing you can find, Intel chips don't require that much cooling.

I must say I liked the look of it and I have just finished reading a favourable review of it...
Kal, the first review you posted refers to the raid version, the second seems to refer to the BD7 as opposed to the DB7 II (if there is a difference...)
The first review IS about the BD7 II RAID, which is the same thing basically as the normal one, wouldn't change the quality of the board...
The second one is about teh old one, I just gave you that because it had reviews of 19 different mobos... ;)
Kal didn't see those reviews, most Abit boards are awesome...
Check out the MSI 845E Max...seems like a decent board. I just checked the Epox site and whatever 845E board they have I haven't been able to find much on it-- I know their 4SDA+ is popular but that's an SiS and Kal said those weren't good...
The general opinion seems to be that the i845E is better than the SiS thing
Regarding that Abit, there's only a couple of faults with it as far as I can tell which don't really concern me anyway...It looks good so unless something better comes along for the same or less money, i'll go with that

No, the 1.6A is on the Northwood core and has 512K cache, yours is the older one...doesn't OC as well :( you might be able to get 2Ghz out of it with good cooling though...
