Which is better? I need to get a handheld computer, and i have heard good and bad things about both. I don't know too much about this area of computers though.

PocketPC certainly looks better
i agree. It seems like pocket pc can do everything palm can and more.. i bet they are more expensive though :(
ok, i just checked it out, they are MUCH more expensive!
Their battery life is really crappy too; Palms can go for weeks and a Pocket PC tends to last for a day.
Yea, but I recharge mine every night.:D
If you want affordable PocketPCs, check out HP Jornada 520 and HP Jornada 525. Both at 149.95, it's the same price of a Palm V, but can a Palm V display color images, watch video, listen to MP3, and take sound captures of your friends saying weird stuff?:D
Filburt, which palm do you have?
for me, battery life is somewhat important, but it probably won't afftet which i get. i am more interested in features. What exactly can your palm do filb?
Palm V; I'm looking into a Clie.Quote:

eisecure: you can get color pictures...my friend does it...he's got jennifer lopez, britney spears, shakira
I have a plam 3e so :p
Fine.
What about color video with sound?
lol well if you want to use up all 2 megs that palm gives you  Im sure you could have a program with about 2 seconds of video :p and if the scene only had beeps for some odd reason :D
heh...that's pitiful.:D
Palm OS is Pocket PC's *****; yes that's right Pocket PC bends over Palm and makes it take it like a slut:D :D
Palm OS lovers try to put up 3 weak arguments:
1) ease of use-- haha, that's the funniest one yet, just click the top right menu to access tasks, contacts, calendars, etc..
2) more compatibility - more and more apps are being developed for PPC
3) battery life-- haha, mine gets 8 horus of straight use (who uses one for 8 hours anyway) and it's full color
Mine is a Casio EM500 and I got it for $199 at Costco
Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, i really can't go over $200.
Justin...Now im interested...tell me more.. :)
I can get a week of constant use, 24/7. Not that I'd want to, but travelers without the docking station could use long batt lives.Quote:

well I might have gotten the special deal :D or rather my parents did (i got it for Christmas) but it's a very nice "organiser" if you want to call it that; I consider it an Mp3 player and a pr0n machine! :pQuote:

It's a lower end model whcih only has 16MB of RAM as opposed to 32 or 64 on the others (Palm only has 2 or 8MB but then again the OS uses less) and it has an MMC slot instead of a CF slot...mine came with a free 32MB MMC card which I use for MP3s, and you-know-what ;) ;)
And it only has PPC2000 and i'm not sure if it's upgradeable to 2002, but the Palms are completely inupgradeable...only the Palm Vx has flash memory and even then OS upgrades are being phased out for Palms. handspring has a way to do it but it takes up your Springboard slot.
Look on pricewatch if you don't have a Costco near you or look at the two Jornadas mentioned above.
I'm not sure if it's really 8 hours, but it's supposed to be pretty decent battery life and it's enough for a day at school, or work, etc as you don't use it every waking moment :D :D
Yeah, well :o
POCKET PCS SUCK
w00t
So if you're a traveler get Palm!:eek:Quote:

If you want to have fun and still have it put in a normal day of work or school get a Pocket PC! :p
And who is really away from a charger for a week..hotels, airplanes, homes, offices..all have AC power!
fine just remember who will be looking at the full picture of that girl in your signature (or something like it) on their Pocket PC which costs much less than a Clie and does much more while you're squinting to see tits on a 2-color screen! :DQuote:

thanks justin. It sounds like pocket PC is the way to go (sorry filburt ;)).
I looked for the EM500 (which sounds REALLY nice esp/ for $199) at pricewatch and the lowest i could find was $219 REFURBISHED! :(. I'll go check out those Jornadas now and see what i can make of them. Any other recomendations that would be comperable to the EM500?
Also, i am still open to suggestions. Any really good reasons to get Palm?
Palm's interface design is very good. Hard to beat. Remarkable what you can do with just a few square inches of screen space and a stylus.
search for the jornada 547...seems cheap on Pricewatch ($220)
what's an extra $20 when you're going to love it :p :p :p
*Ahem*
JPB and I have already been through this
Before you make any decision, check out this thread:
The Best PDA/Pocket PC - Vote!
The answer clearly is: Sony Clie
Dont be trapped and fooled into another Microsoft product!
Save yourself!!!
BTW - Once you get your palm, or palm affiliate, just give me an e-mail if you want to know of any good software or anything.
Later!:D :D
The answer is clearly not sony clit..Quote:

You are just jealous because you bought a Clie and I bought a PPC and I paid less and I can do more.
You're just hung up on MS Products...mine is fast, stable, fun, even overclockable :p
thanks, but thats just outta my price range :(. I'd really like it to be under $200. I'd say $220 is my max.
Attaboy :D it will rule Sony CLIT so don't owrry no matter which one you get..Quote:

Get Jornada 520 or 525. Here's what you get: Full color screen, 16MB RAM/ROM, PPC2000 (unupgradable, but it's still good, since only difference is the patch-through internet connections and the XP-style icons.:D), Type II CompactFlash (I upgraded mine with an additional 64MB RAM).Quote:

The Type II CompactFlash is compatible with IBM's MicroDrive, which has 1GB of removable flash memory. (Beat that, Palm!:D)
WOOT! :pQuote:

Too bad I didn't have one with a CF slot..:( but oh well Palm doesn't have it either and Sony has Memory Sticks so suck on my balls Palm :D :D
i have played with Palms
and i have a pocketpc
i would NEVER buy a palm (almost did)
lots of more options
much more compatibility with windows
(like excel and word)
neer had battery problems yet
i put it on the cradle all the time when i am at my pc
besides its much easier to make your own programs for the pocket pc (love the microsoft for their development strings)
anyone else?
yeah, I've owned 3 types over the last 2 years.
First was a Psion (probably the best, but hey, it's UK and has stopped production)
I bought a Journada after that, and tried to use it daily for 6 months, and by the end of it thought I would be better with a diary and a pen. And this was only last year too.
I use a Palm now for work and play, and I use it every day, hassle free, no problesm, love it.
Why?
Well, what do you want one for? If it for storage of names, addresses, memos, alarms, and a few retro arcade games, plus offline web eradin, get the Palm. It is cheap, quick, stable, clearly read, long battery,a dn (bery important) small & light. It's the sort of thing you use every day.
A pocket PC looks the part, has more gadgets and tools, is very prtty, but how many times are you going to want to watch avis/mpegs ona handheld? mp3? It sucks batteries, it always hung on me, and I had to compromise time, clothing, carry a bag, just to use it daily.
If you want to show off to mates, get the Pocket PC. If you want a practicall, genuinely USEFULL tool, get Palm/Clie/Handspring...
Thanks. Which model Palm do you use?
Correction: is the best :DQuote:

I first had a Psion with an original series 3. It got dropped so many times, but other than I eventually broke the battery cable separately, it works perfectly. Synchronised easily with my computer (not a PC, but hey, this was before I had a PC :p).
The series 5 was probably where they hit the best compromise, the newer Psions like the Series 7 were too big to fit in a jacket pocket. Nice for in your bag though.
I just took my PPC to school. Invaluable little tool/toy. Stored all my homework assignemnts on it, loaded a full color scientific calculator to it, took notes, and listened to MP3s between class.
Oh yeah, and when I got home, the battery level was barely below 100.
I can't think of a better device for $199.
Bog standard Xv. Small light, and overused by me :D.Quote:

Rock solid OS....
Mike, I got the Psion 5mx. It's still working, but I don't use it much unfortunately. I had a Mame spectrum emulator on it, so I could play Elite when travelling home on a Friday night :D
Wish I could have got into it more, but it was just a wee bit to bulky, as you said
Did you ever find a graphing calculator for it?Quote:

I found a couple of them (Demo versions but still) but our teacher requires a specific one.Quote:

PALMS ARE THE BEST
they can be overclocked...I found an article on it somewhere...
oh great...
It seems as though more people like palm...but the pocket PC's peoples arguments are much more convincing. what do i do??
That is true. 8 MB on a Palm is like 32 on a PPC because the OS alone chews up so much space.
heh, Daler's mystery post vanished...odd...;)
Apparently Daler deleted his post...
But Palm OS isn't as CPU intensive as PPC. Besides, you can OC a PPC also ;)
PPC is pretty, Palm OS works. ;)
works = good
pretty = sucks, unless its a chick of course :D
Why don't you try a Pocket PC before you talk **** about them.Quote:

Hmm ;) :D :DQuote:

Filburt....you have a ti-92 right? Well, i have an 89, and they are basically the same thing. I just don't see exaclty what palm can do, that the 89/92 can't. And advice?
iPaqs, haha, guess who makes iPaqs, Compaq. What do you expect from Compaq, a quality product? :DQuote:

92+ has a keyboard and possibly a higher-res screen, and can do derivatives, solve equations, and all that crap out-of-the-box which neither Palm nor PPC can do. 89 just has a smaller screen and the form factor of the 8xs.Quote:

It really boils down to whatexactly you want to do with it. I haven't used PPCs much, but from what people have said here it seems that they tend to have more multimedia features, such as video and audio playing. That's great if you want to listen to something or view videos while you're moving around, but it may not actually end up being any use to you. Personally I don't own a palmtop but I have custody (or whatever) of a Palm V at work, and it's a pleasure to work with. The interface is really good. I can't honestly see myself wanting to view videos on a palmtop (not exactly widescreen viewing), although I can see some merit in the audio capabilities, so long as the device is small enough to keep in a shirt pocket or something like that.
If you want a mobile computer with lots of features that isn't going to fit in your pocket easily (ie without it bothering you), I think that role is much better fulfilled by a laptop. Doesn't have to be a particularly flashy one, and it will have a hell of a lot more features if you feel you want them.
I personally have a tendency not to use anything that requires actual effort to go and get when I want it. I'm one of the most lazy, worst organised people I have ever met, and I have tried all kinds of organiser systems to get myself into a reasonable state of knowing *** is going on. The best organisation solution I have found so far is a short pencil (or a half, sharpened) or a short pen, and a small lined notepad no larger than 2" x 3". That way I can keep it in a pocket and get at it whenever something springs to mind.
If it was me (which is isn't) I would get a Palm because it's small, convenient and has a great interface, mainly because it keeps things simple, as they should be.
If you need a sh**load of features though, maybe the PPC is a good idea. I can't really talk about them because I don't use them, though.
Isn't a memory stick just 8MB? How can you listen to hours of music unless its the same 3 songs repeating over and over again?:DQuote:

Wow - You said CLIT - How creative...
BTW - I just got my nice new memory stick for my Clie, so Im sitting back and listening to a couple hours of MP3s and watchin mad videos, overclocked with AfterBurner to get this thing flying!
Memory sticks go up to 128 MB apiece
I got one 8MB with the 12 Mb built in, plus a free 32MB for buying the Sony Clie, and then I bought one 128MB stick so I have a couple hours of playable music. My one stick is for misc. stuff like pictures, documents, etc... The 32MB is for movies, and the 128MB is for music. :D  :D

For your information smart ass I have tried an N760C. It's a nice machine; I just like mine a whole lot better.Quote:

Have you tried a Pocket PC? If so which model? the iCrap?
I can watch videos too. Casio EM500 has a built in video player. Of course, I haven't loaded any, but I can. :p
Oh and did I mention instantaneous synchronization with Outlook? When my PPC is connected, the instant I check off a task or add a contact in Outlook it is automatically sent to my PPC. Hehe, filburt once sent me a private message about Outlook sync problems with his Palm V :p
Face it man, my Pocket PC has WAAAY MORE features than a Palm can dream of. Your Clie is basically a Palm m505 with a better screen and an MP3 player. Mine is a full color screen with a real file system, multitasking (unlike Palm OS...sure you can listen to MP3s but I can listen to MP3s while playing Solitaire or reading AvantGo or making notes in Pocket Word)
And mine has a full Microsoft SDK , which I'm pretty sure is free the last time I checked. LOL, a weak app development suite for Palm is $99. And since i already know Visual Basic I don't have to learn a whole new language.
I guess you really needed the overclock didn't you...too bad overclocking drains your battery life, so there goes your little argument about how palms have more battery life. :o
By the way you speak apparently you havent ever used a clie.Quote:

Connection With Outlook - I use AOL hooked up to Palm with a wireless modem
Multitasking - HAHA!! YOu dont have a dman clue - I can listen to the Mp3s and all while running any other program on the sustem.
Battery life - We all know it dropkicks PPC's ass
Gotta run to 1st period - La

I don't have the money for wireless service, since I'm not a rich little f**k like you, but I could do the same.Quote:

Nice sync.
I only played with it for about 30 seconds :p but I still have a claim to it...
Uhh, I've been using mine at school for about 8 horus a day and it hasn't dropped below the 80% mark. As a matter of fact I haven't charged it since Sunday.
Let's face it youre grasping at straws, POCKET PC RULES PALM'S ass. The acronym for Palm Operating System is POS-- which is exactly what it is, a POS.
Later.
