Windows XP (RESOLVED)

ok have installed PC with XP professional, it boots up ok however freezes the mouse on screen and keyboard doesnt work, only way to re-boot is pull plug out, its a 1.7 celeron in a as-rock motherboard, 256 DDR and have a 17" Proview TFT monitor, i downloaded the correct drivers to try solve the problem, graphics and monitor, however still the same, if i leave on it either freezes or reboots and has message "VGA not Supported" on monitor, havent a clue what to try next please help?

updated to SP2 and all is well

do you have on-board graphics, or an external card? I can't imagine anything that doesn't support VGA.
Press F5 after the beep a few times to get into safemode. Change the resolution to what it is now, and reboot.
That should get you in...

i had a nvida gforce graphics card on, but have took that out and using the sis graphics card, however there is no fault booting up, allows me to log on the windows xp opens have nortons on and power dvd, its just that after a while it just freezes and i cant do anything?, i did notice it starting doing this when i started to watch DVDs, they would crash/freeze and since, i even formated hard drive and put XP and nortons power dvd back on and it still does it,

i managed to scan nortons once with out a freeze, but nothing, there isnt any virus that could casue this is there, if so is there a method to solve?

nothing to do with power settings?, im really stumped what to try next?, was even thinking puting normal monitor on see if the problem is with tft monitor??, please help anyone

resolution, i have noticed when i play a DVD it changes it?, what resolution should i try?, think have on 1024x800?? will try out

From Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, then Event Viewer, and look for the time that it last crashe, in the System log. It should point to something. Look at the other logs, also. They may lead to problem software.

cheers will have a look at that tonite, let you know what it has in it, it has some times crashed then using nortons and scanning, ive even took the screen saver off so that isnt causing anything, but realy puzzling me and getting on my nerves as you can imagine?, cheers will look at the log and post what it says

like what over heating? its a new motherboard from shop the 1.7 chip have checked in BIOS, not over clocking or anything?

if left in Bios screen it doesnt freeze only when boot up and is a newley installed operating system?

i checked the event log, and there doesnt seem to be any problems all the entrys are information, there isnt ant conflicts, however i have noticed its trying to auto update XP to SP2 turned it on last nite, worked ok for 30 mins, finished download of XP SP2 however before it had chance to install it crashed, just freezed on xp window mouse stop, cant even control alt del? have to either press reset button or unplug on the wall

when restarted again was ok for about 10 mins then re-booted again and ok for another 10 mins and freezed again

froze once thought would leave for 10 mins see if any change, just showing the same screen mouse wont move or control alt del?

you have to have all other updates installed before running SP2. It has a habit of missing things. Also, don't have any NON-MS apps running while you're doing the install. Also, update as many programs as possible before installing, so that they work after the install.

ive put a new hard drive in and out the nvida gforce graphics card back in, however on boot up it sometimes, comes up no signal, the box is powered up, but the tft monitor goes off, on orange light? could there be something wrong with the tft monitor or not compatible with vga from either motherboard and PCI graphics adaptor??

really puzzled here, have a feeling if i put a normal monitor on i wont have ant problems?, but want the tft to work?

go to the TFT monitor home web page and see if they have a better driver that you can use.

ive remove the graphics adaptor and using the on board vga, ive intalled software off the motherboard CD for the graphics adaptor and ive downloaded the Tft monitor driver, it boots up ok still freezing, after 10 mintues, if im palying a video the sound repeats and the mouse keyboard and screen are all froze, can even Cntrl Alt Del??

is there anything i can do, ive looked in event viewer, only nortons and few other bits in there as information

try safemode to see if it is something other than windows software. do you have the latest driver for the monitor? maybe they fixed something.

i will try boot up in safe mode, now, if it freezes agian what shoud i do?

booted in safe mode, just leaving on for a while, have two PCs at home you see

if crashed will post and let you know in 10/15 mins, screen works ok its in 800x600 mode no sound working as have soundblaster 4.1 card in

well been on for 18 mins?, seems ok ish, give it a while, sometime has been ok upto 30 mins then crashed

35 mins, seems one driver must be crashing the system then doesnt it, how do i find it? in safe mode it hasnt added the monitor, should i remove that software and add again, do u think?

or else just switch back to the default monitor, and the driver provided for it. don't they have an lcd screen? I think my buddy just plugged his in over the 14" monitor he used to have, and didn't load anything.

it says just use the plug and play driver, so returned it back to that will put on tonite and see if it crashes at all, was ok for a while last nite, cheers but im sure this wont be the end

ive re installed xp over and still freezes, have had the Task manager open to see whats happening at the time, sometimes the processors is busy at 100% sometimes its was at 19% crashed about 4 times last nite, unsure if a DVD problem, memory it boots up ok but freezes, havent a clue what to try next??

was thinking putting new hard drive in, installing again c if thats the same?

i have noticed that its trying to download updates (XP) and install them, but never had this problem with a PC before, ive even put the screen saver short now, as it froze with the screen saver working just had to pull the plug out, ive updated nortons, however havent been able to scan since Oct

you should google ONLINE*VIRUS*CHECKER to see if there is a problem. I think there is one at trendmicro that is free.

ive done a virus check in oct, nothing, i even re-formatted this disk and it still does it, this weekend im replacing the hard drive and installing see if that sorts it out??

however shouldnt formating get rid of any virus??

and ive disbled the sound card, tried all the things it said that made it hang, guess what still does it?

any one with any idea, its ok for around 10/15mins when i boot up, mother board has Lan, soundcard and VGA on board, but something is freezing windows somewhere but i cant work out what, all that ive installed is nortons antivirus, power dvd, winzip nero 6, never had problems with them before, i do connect to the internet via a Lan, but that shouldnt make much difference should it?

start msconfig, and do a reboot with ONLY M$ products, and minimal processes running. You will find out if windows is hosed, or that another program is the culprit.

exchange the monitor with your other pc, along withthe HD, reformat and see how it goes, check BIOS updates, monitor driver updtes, lan updates everything...

what do if it is the monitor?? update the BIOS?

just use the default monitor, or else the default LCD monitor. pick one from the list, and try it!

well its using the default plug and play monitor however i havebeen told that it could be the heat sink, so im going to remove and get some heat sink compound and re-seat if processor is getting to hot, motherboard will just shut it down

hopefully this is the problem and will fix it today

well i cleaned the fan and processor, got some heat sink compound, and reseated the processor, turned PC on Sunday and i left on for about 3 hours, guess what it didnt crash, however im wondering if anyone knows of any CPU temp programs i can install keep a check on it, can only look in BIOS and was about 26-34 degrees C

P.S its a Celeron 1.7, why would it be overheating, checked the fan and it is working fine???, what advice would you give, bigger fan??, slow processor down a bit, change clock speed??, eg 1.6

guess what, its still doing it, not as aften?? it seems more when i run a DVD or a game, should i try using the other CD drive??

or do you think it could be to do with the display, have on 1200x1000, when play a DVD or a game it changes that?

its still not working correctly, i know if i leave till the weekend when i put on it works ok for 10/20 mins, then when its warm it does it all the time, sounds to me the cpu overheating, however the fan is working correctly, checked temps and is from 23 - 34 degress, 23 at startup

how can i solve this, buy a new processor? it is a 1.7 so can use upto a 2.8

leave the cover off of it to see if it wants more air. you could buy more fans...

was thinking of doing that this weekend, having a big fan blowing into the box see if it crashes then, at least i know then
