The only people that I've ever seen get infected with a virus is ignorant people.
If you don't understand how to avoid viruses, then keep a virus scanner running, but don't go off making ignorant comments just because you need a virus scanner.
If you honestly think everyone needs a virus scanner to "keep them safe", perhaps you arn't as smart as I thought you were....
and no I wasn't pissed about that thread. This is chit-chat, no one gives a **** about posts here otherwise they'd post somewhere else. If I actually cared enough about that post, I would of contacted an admin instead of making a worthless thread.

No you don't. For 1, don't use the spyware filled piece of **** software Kazaa, use Kazaa lite K++. Secondly, don't download ANY executables from it. Doing so is just plain stupid.

No one is immune, there are some very smart people out there who, for some reason, really want to piss people off.
I would think of it as a good idea to at least have a virus scanner ON your system, even if you don't run it.
I received an email about a month ago labelled "Important" from (namehere)@hotmail.com. Now, (namehere) is the name of the girlfriend of the partner I was working with on a project (conveniently due the next day). I had to open the email, even though it COULD have been from some other person.
Of course, if she was more computer-literate she would have put my partner's name in it...
Oh, and the email was in my junk mail folder. :rolleyes:
That is a rediculous statement. You don't HAVE to open the attachment. You could have called to confirm it, sent a email in reply to make sure...but you didn't HAVE to open it. Especially if it COULD have been from some other person.Quote:

Plus, I get AT LEAST 10 emails a day about making money fast, so she's obviously using my email address.
The first time I ran a scan on our family computer (4 people who aren't me and aren't very smart on computers), which has Kazaa, Napster, you name it, it found OVER TWO HUNDRED SPYWARE PROGRAMS!!
Oh, and on a sidenote, I just looked at the Kazaa on that computer and discoevered (to my horror) that an app had been downloaded through it (pinball game).:eek:
My daughter installed kazaa on her PC, Ad-Aware found 385 items when I ran it. It also already had 788 quarantined items. I got rid of most of it, gator etc. No viruses though. I got one on my PC just going to a site, no it wasn't pron. It showed up in my temporary internet files. Avg got it so no harm was done, that I know of.;) Personally I can't imagine going online without an Anti-virus. You can try not to go to "those" sites, but a link doesn't always go where you think it will. People buy old Domain names just so they can suck you in.

Kasracer is right when he says only ignorant people get viruses. I have been going online for many years, and have not received a single virus. I disagree when he says you don't need a virus scanner though; I keep one running "just in case" because my mom uses the computer also, and.... well you get the point.
She infected the entire network with Klez back when it was a serious threat, and she was using Kazaa Lite.

First off, you CANNOT download zips from kazaa unless they're renamed. Extracting form a ZIP will NOT automatically execute anything.Quote:

Secondly, any compressed files from Kazaa are going to be self-extracting. If you openly run ANY exe form Kazaa, you deserve what you get.
Yeak i use Kazaa Lite K++. Kazaa even says it puts spyware in the Terms & Conditions. I got one piece called Cydoor, could never remove it. Not with Adaware, Spyware Blaster, Search & Destryoy. You name the spyware removal tool, it never got rid of it. Ended up formatting the PC, which took about 6 hours, i couldnt find my Graphics disc with drivers on:(
Theres a lesson to learn, dont be a fool and use Kazaa.
You should have viruses scanners running all the time.
I have:
Avast! (Anti-Virus)
Zone Alarm (Firewall)
The Cleaner (Trojan Detector)
running all the time.
And i often run S&D (Search & Destroy spyware removal) and manually scan for viruses with Avast, same goes with the Cleaner. As for Zone Alarm, i have no worries except for updating it, as with the other protection tools.
If you are on a network with a person who is not you then it is impossible to avoid this **** without av protection. BTW I am curious if you are running a web servers on PCs without virus protection?Quote:

I somewhat agree with kasracer. However, I would say that everyone that gets a virus is an idiot. I think most virus infections are the result of novice computer users. It's not that their stupid, they are just not as experienced as some of us as knowing what should and should not be done.
That said I wouldn't run a computer connected to the internet without either A) virus protection software B) a firewall or Both.

I operate one out of my own house sometimes. Never had any problems. If you honestly think web servers need AV, you really shouldn't ever touch a server. The server my site is hosted on doesn't have AV and is a Linux server. I'd love to see someone try hacking into that, or putting a virus on it. Do you even realize how many Linux, FreeBSD, and BeOS servers there are? I guarentee you that you regularlly visit websites and the majority (possibly all of them) do not have AV.

Of course you'll have to keep it up to date because you never know what new exploit comes out, but this is where a firewall comes in. A firewall doesn't need to know if an exploit is old or new, it just blocks what isn't allowed.
You're arguing about something completely different than what the thread is/was about. We were talking about personal computers, and you come in talking about how web servers need AV. I hope you never actually manage any web servers.

Well, I would say it's all just personal preference.
I for one keep AV Software and always keep it updated as well as always keeping Windows updated. I believe software firewalls are pointless and a waste of space & CPU as they always block stuff you want even if they're not supposed to.
Although these are my beliefs, I won't call anyone an idiot or try and argue my point with anyone.

99% of 'known' exploits have already or are already in the process of being solved (but I suppose you think updates are pointless anyway)... so as MasterBlaster said.. it's the unknown ones you need worry about. I got an infected file from a trusted source who was ignorant about the infection on his system. I blocked the virus, but I had no reason to suspect it was there.
I work on a system with lots of users. We have been hit by several viruses. About these I know two things: 1) None of them came from me, and 2) our firewall can be duped. That's all I want to know about it, because around here, a little knowledge can get you diverted onto irrelevant projects for days.

I would love to know why you think I think updates are pointless, especially when I have said several times in this thread to update the OS and software used. Ugh, you just like adding words in my mouth to make your replies look better.

Study? This is common sence dude. A web server will never need a virus scanner. You have a SERIOUS problem if viruses are being executed on your web server.
Like I said before, plant a virus on the server that runs my site. Go for it. You would be one of the smartest computer users in the world to do that.
I picked up alot of security tips and such from the guy who runs the servers. He's pretty much a security expert on alot of different types of servers.
