Civic Type-R or Astra GSi Turbo...

Hi All.

I'm just about to sell my Peugeot 106 Quiksilver (99V excellent condition - £5250) and buy a new sportier car. I've already tested the Peugeot 206GTi180, and it's great, but there's absolutely NO room what so ever... so I decided to squash that idea.

I'm now left with two I like...

Honda Civic Type-R
2.0 DOHC i-VTEC
197BHP
No turbo
VERY VERY basic interior
No Air-con
£15995 (£16995 with air-con)

or...

Vauxhall Astra GSi Turbo
2.0 DOHC ECOTEC
197BHP
Turbo'd (obviously)
Full of features including air-con, heated seats, cruise control etc etc.
£15700

Now looking at the prices and spec's... it's fairly obvious the Astra GSi wins... and it doesn't look like a door wedge like the Civic!

But, the Honda have got much better reports, and are well known for their reliability.

I CAN'T CHOOSE! HELP!

Any comments would be much appreciated.

My friend bought second hand Nissan Skyline GT exported from Japan and it rocks. He paid $15000 US since we know someone who does this business.

I've got a 2002 SXI (The GSI's smaller brother), with a 1.8 16v single point injection engine, and it does shift really quite nicely, but part of me is still wishing that I did go for the type-R :),

Points To consider

if you intend having it for quite a while, you do get the Japanese Reliability. so you can weigh that against the added options that you get with GSi

a normal vauxhall service is about 120 quid, where as a Honda is quite a bit more.

How old are you, as the Word Turbo Makes Insurance companies laugh at the younger driver, as the type R will be cheaper to insure.

At the end of the day, it's still an Vauxhall, and still an astra :p

Why buy a new car. it will just depreciate and be worthless in 3 years.

if you are going to buy new go for clio 172 as it has a higher BHP per ton and whoops the astra and the honda. (my brother has one)

i have a f reg BMW 325 i sport. it has done 125000 miles. i bought it for £1500 and it is a rocket ship. i recently put on a stright through exhaust which has bumped the power to 213 BHP.
the straight six bmw engine is exactly the same block that is inthe current m3 (but bored out a bit to 3.2) and will go on to over 250000 miles (plus it is the most smooth engine).

6 cylinder engines are much better balanced than 4 and produce a much smoother power curve. i get a burst of power at 4500 rpm.)

sorry i was rambling. Cars are a very big hobby of mine. i did a degree in automotive engineering too.

I'm 19 with 0 yrs no claims.

The insurance for the Civic Type-R is £4700 @ 750 excess (Budget Insurance Services)
The insurance for the Astra GSi Turbo is £3850 @ 550 excess (Vauxhall direct)

I'll be changing the car every 12 months, so the overall service costs don't really matter.

One thing i would say for the Honda is it never stops wanting you to push it harder and harder! On the test-drive a few weeks ago, it was SO sensitive and responsive... but it looks like a bread van! I love the gearbox, and I don't know why other manufactures don't adopt the same mechanism.

The Astra's turbo kicks in @ 2500RPM, and there's very little lag either. You can almost feel it dumping more and more fuel into the engine! Sweeeeet.

BTW, you had any probs with your SXI?

btw i would bet the astra over the honda. (it has a turbo!) and looks nicer too

I get the depreciation value back anyway... so i'm not really bothered! :)

The Clio 172 is a bag of ****. Cheaply made, awful security and goes like stink for a few miles before it's due for repair! Not a fan of the Clio... sorry!

Everyone seems to be avoiding the initial question.... Civic or Astra???

I have already tested their competition, and nothing matches the sheer speed, or reliability of these two!

Had it 8 months now, it was an ex demonstrator, so had all the extra's, saved myself about 5 grand. only complaints so far, have been the brake calipers make a whining noise at very low speeds, but this is well documented over the web that Vauxhall can't seem to sort this out.

I would go for the Astra because anyone driving a honda is usually a **** (No offense :p :p )

On a side note never buy a BMW there is always a **** in them. Seems to give overconfidence to drivers who pull off stunts like overtaking 5 cars in a row before they look for incoming traffic :D :D :D

Talk to a good mechanic and then buy a car which is pretty good at modification and then install super charged twin turbo and nice spoilers and wide wheels and good exhaust and it will rock.

A guy down the road has installed rally seats and a huge exhast to an old fiesta (I think) and it looks stupid!!!!!!!:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

For my money there are 3 out there not on your list:

Seat Leon Cupra-R
Seat Ibiza Cupra-R

Skoda Octavia RS Turbo.


All of the above have the VW build quiality, retail for as low as £17 grand and pop a cool 180 bhp.

I'd have the Octavia personally but there ya go...

I wouldn't go for the Seat's though! They are just 'B' grade VW parts whacked together with minimal attention to detail. They won't put the power down as efficiently as the Astra or the Honda either!

Well the smart roadster does 60 miles per gallon which i bet the Honda and the Astra dont :D :D :D

Have you checked fuel consumption??? That can cost you alot more over the year :( :( :(

Huh... you try and find a Turbo kit for a 2003 Honda Civic Type-R.

The fuel consumption is slightly higher on the Astra, but not by much.

I think i'll be going for the Astra GSi, but if someone can find a turbo kit for the honda... i'll think about it!

U need to ask some decent mechanic about ur choices and then decide. Bunch of ppls at forum will get u no where and BTW if I were u then I will still choose honda over VW.
