I am actually very sad about leaving my little Arts forum.. but fortunately most of the people I like playing with are members here too.. so I will get to see them here anyway.. even if we don't have our nice little corner of the 'net to talk about Art and Music and those things.
:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Woo hoo... Ok.. all I need now... is somewhere to host it.. LOL and someone to write the PHP hacks.. and some more members, so far I have 5 members.. hehe might need a few more;):D
*put self forward as the PHP dude* ;)
if you don't mind a .tk domain, you can get one free here http://www.dot.tk/
not sure if they do the webspace for free as well, but you might be able to redirect that domain to free space you get from your ISP or something
This place is better then TT, has everyone from TT plus more.
How much server space does it take realistically to host a forum? I'm assuming lots if you want to be able to keep older threads around for a while or less if you only keep current threads.
I don't have any interest in hosting a forum personally, but my step-son wants to and he started asking me a lot of questions like I know anything about it.
*states the obvious* depends on the traffic levelsQuote:

TT (200 or so members) has a 75MB size limit and I think 8GB/month transfer limit. It manages to keep well within the transfer limit, but the size limit is a bit of a bugger.
something like VBF would need a good few gigs of space and unlimited bandwidth; e.g. a dedicated server which = expensive.
I suggest he starts off with a shared hosting plan with 500MB or so space and 10-15GB bandwidth limit...you can pick those up for $20ish a month. If it goes tits up he won't have spent too much money but there is pleanty of room for expansion
This biggest problem with hosting a forum is finding a host that will allow the tons of queries used by Vb. Even the best hosts will shut you down if you have 30 people on at once, because it really slows the computer.
This is assumed you have shared hosting. Naturely if you have dedicated, or even semi-dedicated, you will not run into this problem.
This is basicly why Vb 3 will support flat file db.
Uh, no it won't :confused:Quote:

You can always get your act together and do the styles you promised me...admin DF... ;) :D
OK, I thought it would be in the GB range. I have 500 MB for $18/month. I'm using about 55 MB of it now, but I didn't think that would even be enough for a popular forum. I have no idea what my bandwidth is.
I think he's trying to put his phpbb on tripod. Basically I think he'll get some good experience out of it which is good. I'm trying hard not to give him grief about it. He wants a combined NeoPets/VB forum. I don't see the connection, but whatever.
Tripod is horrible for forum hosting, there are constant problems at the vB support forums about trying to install even vB Lite on Tripod.Quote:

As it turns out, my new host doesn't account size of the db for the 75 MB, just public_html, mail, etc. So the size isn't a real limit. For a board with on average 15 members online at once, I'm guessing that would be around 8 GB/month. Of course it wildly varies: adding hacks, turning off attachments, and turning off avatars will make it shoot way down.

Arg I am not awake sorry...
What I ment was it will allow such binary data to be held as files rather than within the database. I understand that vbulletin 3 (when it's released) will offer both options as standard.
But I could be wrong :p
Pretty sure you are :p
BTW DF, look at the footer here
I heard netfirms is good for ikonboard (sp?)Quote:

ok, here's a question. I was on the phone with the guy to get web hosting and suddenly realized I had no clue what to use as a domain name. So of course in a fit of brilliance, I chose my own name.
OK, that was stupid, but now I'm stuck with it until I get motivated enough to pay more money for a different name.
What I'm wondering about is sub-domains if there is such a thing. How does it work and how do I get them?

;) hehehe.. need to talk to you about that .... will PM you or are you on ICQ?
Sub domains, are really nothing special. Basicly like making folders on your computer, and accessing them by useing myfolder.myname.com.
Most hosting companies give you as many as you want, no charge. Either they will have a control panel to create one, or you have to email them.
I've been waiting for you to authorise me for 2 weeks!!!! :eek:Quote:

OK, that's not really what I want. I actually want a different domain name that uses my server. I probably just need to buy a different name.Quote:

Thank you for that anyway :)
registerfly has domain names for 10$/yr
my site hits about 5gb/month, about30-40 people online everyday, maybe 10-15 at the same time at the most.
phpbb sucks for anything beyond a basic forum. doesnt have custom titles or anything, i had to add those in with hacks.
DF, you'll always be my favourite. Even now when you've come to your senses ;)
*breathy voice* Oh Wally... and you are my favourite big... bad.. rabbit;)

Jello not about then ? :p
I dont think u should be allowed to come back like nothing has happened!!! You need some punishment and penance ... like sleeping in the same bed as Jello for a year.
Did the Mutineers on the Bounty get welcomed back with open arms?? I think not... well they got lots of hot native women for a while but .. emm they did die in the end!! Well except for the Norfolk island groupies... hmm where was I ... yeah... there's a hell of a lot of sucking up to be done... and some form of monetary compensation for the likes of myself :)
