I agree, they were brilliant :)
What's your favourite Nirvana song then?
probably 'come as you are' if i had to pick one, but i love them all
and you?
I have three; Lithium, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and their cover of The Man Sold The World :)
I like The Man Who Sold the World and Polly.
Nirvana > http://www.vbforums.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=949524
I was a big "In Utero" fan
Radio Friendly Unit shifter and Tourette's kick my butt :D
Definately the greatest band of the 90's. I mean, there was pre-Nirvana and then there was post-Nirvana. That was the 90's.
I think On a Plane was my favorite. I can still remember a road trip where my girlfriend and I must have sung that song at the top of our lungs a dozen times on straight repeat.
BTW, for the three people here who think Nirvana sucks, I'd hate to see what makes it in your book of cool.
"The man who sold the world" was a great cover of a David Bowie song, even, although I'm loath to admit it, better than the original.
They were a great band but some people said that they got slightly more attention than they deserved...whereas bands like the pixies didn't receive nearly as much attention but they were far more original.
I think Nirvana sucks... and you're the only entry in my book of cool.... :p :p :pQuote:

You've got a point there. The pixies were awesome and Kurt Cobain's songwriting owes a lot to Frank Black, but no matter how much he owed to the Pixies, there was one thing in my opinion that Kurt Cobain had over all his peers.Quote:

Even if you were mumbling along with half of it, no one else could even come close when it came to writing songs that were so damn fun to sing along with!
The best thing about Nirvana (and the rest of the Indie/grunge) scene was that it was such a relief after a decade of really crap music.
I was so glad that the 80's were finally over...
Yeah, when Teen Spirit came out, the state of music at the time was acts like Whitney Houston and songs like Michael Jackson's Billy Jean.
Yikes!
There was a lot of good music from the 80's but you had to dig through a lot of crap to find it.
I try not to be caught listening to too much of it now though to try to avoid dating myself too much.

I like 80s music.... crap can be good
That has got to be an all time classic quotation!!!Quote:
crap can be good
Just because something's crap doesn't mean that it isn't good...
This is always the case I find :( Maybe there was a bit more crud around in the late 80's then normal.Quote:

I liked Nirvana, but they were nipped in the bud and didn't have the chance to become stale. Do you think they would have become like Foo Fighters?
Foo Fighters are great too :)
I liked their first albumn but I went off them after that.Quote:
Foo Fighters are great too
Their subsequant albumns sounded a bit samey.
I think Kurt Cobain blew his brains out in fear of becoming a Foo Fighters before there was a Foo Fighters.Quote:

Well, okay, there was the drug addiction thing, and Courtney Love could drive any man to suicide, but I do think that he was struggling with In Utero to the point that he felt that he was forced to tap a dried up well.
Really though, the Foo Fighters are great. Some of Dave Grohl's song writing is as incrediblely good as pop songwriting can get.
LOL :D:D:DQuote:

Originality and consistency... I'm crap at both, in a good way ;).
:D Might add that to my signature!Quote:

Gary Numan/Depeche Mode/Duran Duran etc... all good stuff.
Then there's Tenpole Tudor/Tiffany/Sinitta etc... complete rubbish, but enjoyable to listen to... and therefore good, honest crap
 :confused:Quote:

I was a big Nirvana fan... cant think of one fave as most were excellent... maybe Breed or Heart Shaped Box... :-(( ... too many Aneurysm for WAAAHHH appeal :p lithium.... ballads - jesus etc, man who sold the world, oh me..... lounge act... arghhh make me stop...... in bloom....... obviously SLTS...
ok fave? probably Aneurysm at full vol
Hmmm...Can't say I'm fond of any of that stuff.Quote:

You're not making me nostalgic!
Come As You Are is probably my favourite.
In that case, I guess it was pretty much a rubbish decade for music for you :)Quote:

OMD? :D
I really like a lot of 60s and 70s stuff too, but it's only just recently that I can bring myself to listen to a lot of 90s stuff (talking pop/chart-wise now).
(Voted ROCKS! in the poll btw  )
I notice that not many people have taken their favourite songs from the "Bleach" albumn. Does anyone like that albumn?
My favourite song off that one has got to be "Negative Freak".
Harry did :) ... besides pound for pound Muddy Banks was prob their best album ever although I do like MTV Unplugged as well. In Utero was hmm ok but not the best. I think it was a gesture against their record company.
"Negative Freak"? I meant "Negative Creep".
And I don't think "Come as you are" is from the "Bleach" albumn.
 sorry.. mixed up with About a Girl... they were first two songs I heard from Nirvana and first time i didnt like either of them...
OK, I concede. There are many more songs that I love:
Bleach: ooh...great album. floyd the barber, about a girl, school (Paw did a pretty good cover of this too), mr moustache, swap meet...I actually had one of the earlier pressings on vinyl (the version without love buzz on) and sold it for far less than it was worth. It had a scratch on it and I was upgrading to CD. Shame really, cos I found out it was worth a small fortune shortly after I sold it :(
Nevermind: I like the obscure ones of this album - Drain You and Lounge Act are probably my favourites
Incesticide: Anuerism all the way baby...I like Dive and Sliver too
In Utero: Dumb, Very Ape, Milk It, Radio Friendly..., and Tourettes are all cracking tunes.
I also like D7, Even in his Youth, Verse chorus verse, Moist vagina, and a big bunch of others...
Hey, Hey! My, My!
Rock'n'Roll will never die.
It's better to burn out,
Than to fade away...
My, My! Hey, Hey!
Cafeenman
I have exactly the same opinion on Kurt Cobain,
that is, good, but not great,
AND on suicide, that it's your life and if you wish to end it, just don't leave a mess
for the cleaning crew AND about not leaving kids etc behind.
I'm scared.
I don't know if they owe their "whole act".Quote:
Nirvana owes their whole act to The Pixies and Sonic Youth.
Every band owes a great deal to the bands they were listening to when they decided to form their own band. It just so happens that at the time before Nirvana hit, Kurt Cobain was listening to bands that were a lot cooler than anything most of the rest of the world was listening to.
Honestly, which band did you discover first? Maybe for you it wasn't Nirvana, but for me, it was only because of Nirvana and hearing and reading interviews with Kurt Cobain that I ever even heard of The Pixies and Sonic Youth. Maybe you were already hip to those bands, but I always thought that it was pretty cool that here Nirvana was the biggest band in the world, and yet they were always giving all the props to bands like The Melvins, The Pixies and Sonic Youth when most superstars in that position end up trying to take all the credit for themselves.
I love the Pixies and Sonic Youth's pretty cool, too, but I'd still rather listen to Nirvana (although the Pixies are a pretty close second.)
I have an mp3 somewhere with Machine Head doing a bit of Negative Creep, it's pretty good... also on the same mp3 they have a go at Ironman (Ozzy) and Roots (Seps). The Roots rendition is pretty awesome actually.
I have two Words For Nirvana
MUD HONEY!
Yea He should have shot his ******* wife first, then the rest of the band could release the rest of their recordings.Quote:

What are some good pixies songs that i should download?
Death to the Pixies is a great place to start. It's a two CD set, the second disc being a kick ass live performance, but a good place to start would be with the tracks from the first CD, a greatest hits if you will.
