Or can we agree that the phrase I wrote is so commonly used that I really didn't have to acknowledge no one?
Potato is one of the words that although is similar to Greek Patata it's actually not Greek as they where found, if I am not mistaken on the early Columbus travels?
But, but, we overused them so much here. Baked fried streamed on Greek Musaka on Greek Pita and all kind of salads ...Mmmmm....
I suppose the writing skills they teach vary around the world. It is common practice in this country to acknowledge other's work when it is lifted word for word. It is called plagiarism and is frowned upon. You wouldn't want people to think you made that up on your own.
What you might think of as a common phrase or quote doesn't necessarily mean it is well known. Especially outside of one's country.

I suppose it might be the case there but it's not the case here. But good to know.

Did you miss that day in school :p

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Nah, I've written essays and done my courseworks including the sources but writing a saying to the chitchat of a developer forum carefully trying to quote the author was not in our teachings. Then again I missed a LOT of days in school, so you never know. It might appear that 99,9% of Greeks missed that day in school :p

False and false -- there were no potatoes in the Middle Ages because literally Middle Ages end in 1492 with Columbus, you know what he did then.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Maybe they used turnips. That was a commonly used crop before potatoes.
Potatoes nearly replaced them though, they just have more nutritional value in terms of calories.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
I thought it was eggplant/aubergine based with a bechamel sauce on top? No potatoes. Sapator will set us straight anyway :)
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
The Greek chef "tselementes" added the French bechamel sauce also Eggplant was known to Byzantines, imported from India.
They did not have potatoes but variations of similar dishes that created what is known a Mussaka may exists on Byzantine times.
...
Also why am I arguing, I don't even like Eggplant.
Pastitsio for the win!!!

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Seems a bit like pizza, to me. Italy claims it, but tomatoes came from the new world, so the pizza most common in the US couldn't have come from Italy....though a pizza with a different type of sauce certainly could have.
In the end, it doesn't matter. Different regions can take the same dish in different directions. It's all good...except for Cincinnati chili, that's just weird.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
I would take Mediterranean cuisine any day of the week tho and probably added that LARGE Tomahawk Stakes with barbecue sauce.
Of course Ice creams any flavor and for sweets probably Galaktoboureko, If you haven't tasted that....Ohhhhh boyyyy....
P.S. I think some Italian cook added something for a King that wanted a big sandwich or something and accidentally created pizza but I also think that pizza variations where found in Greek and Roman cuisine .

It's bread with stuff on it. I would guess that has turned up in one form or another since the dawn of baking.

A quick Google search seems to indicate you made that up. Probably didn't need to search...no self respecting author would use a broken phrase like that :D

Well it's a paraphrase of "expensive perfumes come in small bottles" so I wanted to both expose and bash you muharhaaarrrrr!! :p:bigyello:

I know Idaho is largely rural, but wow. Pizza is just potatoes on bread?
Could be worse. I had California Pizza in a hotel once. it had celery on it!

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Well, infection, hospitalisation and death rates rates are going up over here and the media and government are finally talking about it. Looks like we're likely to get mandatory masks back and vaccine passports are likely to be thing. Infection rates had been moderately high for a while and, like every other signal we've had about this since the beginning, our government put it's fingers in it's ears and ignored it.
Oh, and it's Aubergine, not Eggplant! The clue's in the fact that there's no egg in it! Ruddy sceptics mangling the language again. Football is played with your feet, not your hands, and letting everyone see your pants is wholly inappropriate.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Yeah, it sounds like there is a "Delta Plus" variant ramping up now. So far I haven't heard that it is more dangerous, but it seems to be more transmissible.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Well.
Don't say I haven't warned you.
P.S. Why Funky explaining football is beyond me. There is only one game of football, the other is pumpkinball :D

I'm pretty sure that I HAVE heard of potato pizza, though I haven't tried any.
The funny thing about Idaho and potatoes is that we make such a big deal about them, but I don't know that I have ever seen a potato farm in this state. Where I am, it's mostly sugar beets and mint, with some fields of onions. When the mint is being harvested, that's pretty nice. Sugar beets...not so much, as they don't have much smell. However, the great onion migration in western Idaho is a sight to behold. They aren't very good at crossing the roads, though, so there are times in the fall when the scent of their crushed bodies can be rather overpowering on some stretches of road.
But when it comes to potatoes....where are they? I think they're mostly grown to the east of me. We sure do talk them up, and I do think we produce a bunch of them....but where?
I think there ought to be an expose. Somebody should really go digging around and get to the root of the matter on potatoes. Get some eyes on those spuds, I say!! What's the dirt on potatoes?
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Potato Pizza is a thing here but , bleah!
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
We grow a lot of potatoes here. Mostly the Russet, smaller round white, smaller red, and those yellow-fleshed firmer ones. Probably more than half are the round whites and most of those get used as potato chips.
Farms range from small to large, but here large is between 1000 and 1500 acres. 1500 acres is about as big as adjacent tracts of private land can get here with a few exceptions like enclaves of the wealthy like the Huron Mountain Club.

I don't get the impression it's a new variant (though I couldn't rule it out), rather I think we in the UK are suffering from complacency.
Our initial vaccine roll out was excellent and put us well ahead of the rest of Europe. Off the back of that we lifted pretty much every measure you can think of. Nobodies wearing masks, gigs are back on (been to a couple myself), pubs and clubs are open, we've all stopped washing our hands, nobodies checking who's vaccinated and who's not and we're all hugging each other every chance we get. To my knowledge our "social" measures are by far the laxest in Europe and we're paying the price for that.
The vaccines are highly effective but they're not 100% perfect - nothing is. They are a major (possibly THE major) part of the solution but we've made them our only measure. Any IT security expert will tell you that's a bad strategy.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
There are issues with that.
UK is 70% vaccinated. You then have to suspect that if covid continues there is either something wrong with the vaccinated or it's all the fault of the unvaccinated or both.
The only way to have people here screaming their laungs to vaccinate is if it's the unvaccinated fault but with new data coming more and more in that is a very far off chance.
If it's vaccinated then shame on you (I mean shame on the vaccinated not you in particular) if it the unvaccinated then same on us , if it's both then it does not matter if we vaccinate or not to prevent the specify situation you mention.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Don't worry. As soon as it becomes "correct" to say vaccination didn't help enough the usual trolls will emerge, agree, and blame Trump. We are close to that day.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
I'm must admit I'm intrigued to see what will happen in US. In Europe you can predict, give or take, some actions but in US it's always a new surprise coming through.

I think that's because of the size and patchwork nature of the US. What happens in Idaho is much different from what happens in Michigan, because we're far enough apart that we can act independently. There just isn't enough flow of people between places, so waves can wash back and forth from place to place. In fact, what we may be seeing is just that: Slow motion waves moving through a large population, with surges happening where crests combine.
Or not. The bottom line is that we're too big, and not moving around enough, to be considered one entity for the sake of epidemiology.
-
Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
I think I have to concur on that.
Even the latest study on COVID Deaths Before and After Vaccination Programs does not cover USA. Even tho the study is from John Hopkins university.
And take a look if you like, interesting data.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
It would be tough to include the US in something like that. Something like before and after a vaccination program would depend largely on whether the vaccination program was very successful, like some parts of Washington, or largely ignored like it was in Idaho (we still only have 43% vaccinated, and may never get to 50%).

You also have to consider the pandemic in the US didn't get the full attention it needed until after the administration change.

Re: [RESOLVED] Corona virus, China major city lockdowns, etc.
Er, no. Trump's vaccine push (Operation Warp Speed) had not produced a tested product ready to be administered until the Biden Coup occurred. The embarrassingly weak acceptance levels however definitely occurred on Biden's watch.

Well I'm not the one who keeps raising insane politically-motivated points. I just push back on the crazies, stuffing them back into the sewers.
