I am 19, i study Computer Science at university, so therefore i don't make any money from programming, i just get in debt instead.
I know:
VB6 - Taught myself (when i was 16) because i was bored of school/college. [intermediate skill level].
VB.NET - Taught myself (when i was 18) because i got sick of VB. [beginner - intermediate skill level].
Java - Learning it at uni right now. [beginner - intermediate skill level].

No wonder vb is your favourite, you haven't really learned any good languages (maybe with the exception of ASP, which is decent). Java is quite a nice language, good for learning before C++, C or C#.

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
How bout me?
I'm not a teenager when I started programming.
I started on BATCH programming and QBasic when I was 9yrs old.
The 1st time I was get paid is when I was 12 yrs old, a simple HTML page asked by a college student.
Then I learned Turbo Basic, Turbo Pascal, Java, Turbo C/C++, VB6.0/.NET2003/2005, VBScript, ASP.NET2005, C#, Flash.
I used what I learned to earn money and finish my study.
Now I'm re-studying Java and I want to start on PHP.
Pls help me.

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
I'm 16 and started off in VB6 about 7 months ago. I'm sure I could make money off my programs, but since I'm not dieing for money @ the moment, I make all my prog.s freeware ;) check out one of my better programs @ www.MyOhCrapButton.tk
EDIT: not supporting anymore - I've moved on
I'm 17 now and I have made money (and other payments - e.g. cookies) for a few programs. Most of mine are just freely distributed in my school because they're workarounds for irritating blocking systems they use ;Þ (e.g. LanSchool, restriced disk access, etc)
One of them I could turn into a steady income because if I charged my friend's parents for each bug-fix and then charged my friend for each workaround I give her to bypass it, I'd be rich in no time! ;Þ
The rest are for personal stuff.

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
Ahhh...this thread brings back memories. It includes my first ever post somewhere in there.

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
I'm 15 and got a good understanding of programming in vb.NET. i've made some money by selling a few of my apps to people on floppy.
I pray the people i sold them to had the .NET FW(!)

Re: How many teenaged programmers?

Hi ... so you're 15 and you are not in school? You said you are attached to a company ... also, you dont just learn a language, well i dont know about Php and some of the others (most of them arent programming languages), but with ASP it takes years to know it inside and out.
-
Re: How many teenaged programmers?
It's a form of exaggeration. Early exaggeration helps with resumes.
-
Re: How many teenaged programmers?

haha yar i know.. some of them are scriptings.. or whatever u call them.. I'm still studying.. just that I'm having industrial attachment now. In my school, we were made to learn the various languages, but only the basic. I agree with u that it takes years to master ASP.. that's why i prefer PHP to ASP haha =X
-
Re: How many teenaged programmers?
It doesn't take years to master any language.
It takes years, and dedication, to master programming.

I am 15...
I started with a program called "Game Maker" in 2003.
I wanted to try something new, so I tried Visual Basic.
So I am using Visual Basic for apps, and Game Maker for games... Mostly.
You can create apps with Game Maker though.
Well the real start was .bat files... :P

Re: How many teenaged programmers?

Yo lol your comment hit home. I mean the 'Get a LIFE' part only, I don't struggle with exercise lol I can do 120 pushups myself ;)
I started programming on my dads old casio PB-7100 in about 2002, from there moved on to QBasic and eventually got VB6. I now mostly use VB.NET
I have also been learning Java, C#, C++
I reckon if you want to make big money:
You should keep your eyes WIDE open for what's hot, so that with your imagination(a programmers strong point) you can always be a few steps ahead
Keep up to date with the latest programming languages, and let your friends know that you're an expert programmer, so that they can let you know of any opportunities they hear of.
Otherwise what can you do besides be extraordinarily creative or find a part time job. hahaha :)

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
Hi, i'm Miguel from Argentina and i'm new around here.
I'm currently 25 years old, but i first started programming back in 1992 when i was 11. I found a book about algorithms in my school library and started programming with an old 286 mostly GWBasic and some DOS batch scripts. I never made a single buck (or should i say peso ;), but it was something fun to do in rainy days.
Now i'm a full time programmer and i work almost with any language it's needed.
PS: forgive me if my english is bad

Re: How many teenaged programmers?

i recently completed my first ever job for someone (which got me some money) but i mainly program my own things for fun.

Re: How many teenaged programmers?
I wonder how many young people who say they know a language, actually really "know" it. Its easy enough to pickup and change a few lines, but I mean write a full blown app. I thought I did at 18 when I started my first programming job after 4-5 years learning at home. Then I found out I knew nothing, it all went down the drain, I had to relearn, not how to use a language but how to code in a real environment, with other programmers and by spec. Its a very diffferent beast.
-
Re: How many teenaged programmers?
i always program from the start when making my own apps using the standards for the code such as indenting etc, the ones i mentioned i know are ones i have been working on for nething from 2-5 years :)
