Vista was originally supposed to be released in 2003. You say they released ie7 beta early due to firefox, I say they "partially released longhorn." :)
Say it how you like, either way Fx was responsible for the boosted development MS were to lazy/stupid to impliment earlier. IE 7 would have just been IE 6 with a facelift, no changes to the rendering engine at all except maybe a few long standing bugs. They would have made no effort to support standards at all.Quote:

Well Vista is out there in Beta1 back in Sept. 05 so it is out there. I have beta1 and yet to find spare time to install it. When exactly did IE 7 beta1 come out? :D
You know what would be cool. If they implemented the CLR into internet explorer. Not ASP.Net or any language server side, but made the CLR work client side (like a scripting language, but OOP). Do you have any idea of what potential that could present to the browser? Firefox finds a way to make postback look like it's not happening. MS eliminates postback.

Far out, enough with the "cult" thing already. Of course products with a large following are going to have their fanboys, both IE and Firefox have them (obviously). All I wanted to do originally was make more people aware of a decent alternative. What do you think I used before I discovered Firefox? Yeah it was good old IE. As for Opera I didn't even know it was supposed to be a web browser.
Now please, enough with the OMG MY BROWSR RULZ!!!1!11 thing. If you take remove all the hype, spin, opinion, both IE and Fx have their merits against each other (yes IE 7 will have some features that are better than Firefox currently, such as a proper RSS feed viewer*). I use all Fx, IE, Opera all regularly when testing websites and Fx for regular browsing because I happen to like it most. I do understand why some people get worked up over it, including me sometimes (I'm writing Javascript these days, it's hard to stay calm doing that)
I just want to point out right now though that I am very impressed with the speed of the 1.503 update, it was rolled via autoupdate within I think a week or so of the security hole being discovered. True, it was made public, which forced the update, but so was the WMF exploit and how long did that take? From a purely objective point of view you'd have to say MS came off second best in that comparison (and it seems a fairly consistent scenario too)
and now maybe we can use this thread for rational discussion instead of one-upmanship. Or even what it was originally intended for, a place to share stories :)
P.S. I have not tested IE 7 as I do not generally test betas.
* Firefox 2.0 will also have an RSS feed viewer. Just wanted to point that out as they are both upcoming versions.

I currently use both. I like IE because it's more familiar, but I keep Fx around for development (making sure things work on both). I was actually half way serious about a client side scripting language involving the CLR in IE though. I could see that as a step in MS's plan. Every other product they have is becoming CLR compatible?
That was quite possibly the most badly constructed post I've ever written.
