Personally, I think this is part of the problem. The only "Americans are stupid" threads that I've seen here were both started by Americans as jokes - including the one where Greg jumped in with both feet. (Mind you, RJ didn't exactly help in the other one.) Some people immediatley leap into these threads and start laying waste to everyone else without bothering to establish the facts first. Greg is a prime example of this. When he then goes on to say that the only possible problem anyone can have with America is jealousy, that is bound to annoy people. It certainly annoyed me.
Some people on this forum are hyper-sensitive. I know I am on certain subjects. Unfortunately, these people are often too heavy handed in their defence of their pet subjects, and that gets other people's backs up. From there, it just snowballs and deteriorates into personal and/or national insults and childish bickering. As an example, how many posts by jpbtennisman end with "STFU, *******"? It's certainly not in single figures.
I fear I've lost track of the point I was trying to make. In essence, though, some people here are too offensive, and some people (ironically, often the same ones) are too sensitive. Put them in a thread together and you'll have trouble. Unfortunately, the end result is that people who aren't overly-sensitive (e.g. Katie) then turn up and are faced with the results of the escalated conflicts: inflammatory comments that would offend anyone.
Shame, really. If the more rational people leave, what will we be left with?
I agree with you to a great extent. I'm not sure if I'm too sensitive or I just love a good fight. Which ever it is, I will continue to defend my culture when I feel it is being unfairly attacked. Just about anybody would do the same.
