Also, I thought I would meantion the fact that bravenet.com is a good free place to get stuff for websites (polls, hit-counters, ect). They also have options to prevent double votes or double counts oon the hit-counters. It does something like prevent 2 hits from a IP address every X hours. I belive it is 2 hours.
I belive we all decided that we needed to change the name.
I would like to help but I don't think I could commit to anything big right now. (or within the next 2 years :))
But I will definetly be around the beta test and help out with little things and post my opinion.
I don't know who decided to change the name but I really think it has to happen before everyone thinks of this as Zelda only!
you also should think about how much alike this game should be!
unfortunately, there is no way I could spare the time to help with your project. Sorry. I'm not a programmer anyway, but Sentience takes up nearly all of my free time, and that project has been running for over 2 years now.
However, I will be around to help test, perhaps make suggestions and advise how to avoid the mistakes we've already made.

Here is some advice =).
Screw the login screen for now. Someone just sit down at a computer, open up VB, and write a quick and dirty tile engine. It shouldnt take more then a few days, maybe a week if you are lazy =). Thats about how long the divinity tile engine is going to take, and its in 3D =). Once that is done, and you have something to play with, and youve tasted blood, get a list of things that you are going to need in your engine laid out. Separate the engine into components(graphics, networking, sound, etc), and farm them out, or get them working by yourself. What you guys REALLY need right now is to throw all other games out the window, unplug your internet connections, and throw a brick through your TVs (not really =), and get something going. If its nothing more then a tile engine, with a network connection going so that two people can run around and chat with each other, you have got yourselves a good start. Once you have started, its really easy to keep going (as long as you dont stop. That is hell =). Then just build it up. Release a version to a couple of people, and see how things are running. Replace all of those VB controls with custom drawn GUI components, etc, etc. Move it over to DX, etc. Just get something going =).

Zaei is right. I think all of you have set up many tile engines before so I guess that task should be done within let's say two hours at max.
Than the client-server thing is a little harder but altogether it should be done within one day.
But you should think about how you structure the whole thing, that is where I have the biggest trouble every time. You have to come up with some way to do it so you can add functions and change functions without influencing others.
btw has there been a decision if you are gonna do it in DX7 or 8? I would take 7 I guess, but I can understand if you take 8 for cooler lighting.
I would say 8, then we would have cooler lighting, plus we could add in stuff like hills.

I just edited the thread title to be a new name: Unlimited. If the vote shows Lands of Power, then I will change it again, but as the vote currently shows 4:0 Unlimited, I doubt that it will happen.
a couple of points:
4 votes is basically nothing AND I went there today and voted twice (yes without reconnecting or anything) so this poll is kind of wierd because it allowed me to vote twice (well maybe just someone voted the exact same moment...)
you can do cool lighting with DX7, but if you guys are already using Dx8 than go for it, I set up a tile engine in there (only the real basic basics, didn't have any idea what to do afterwards :)).
what do you mean with you can add hills? are you gonna do it in 3d or 2d if it's real 2d you can add hills by the old way in every directx version...

Bravenet uses both a cookie, and the setup to prevent 2 votes from the same person within 2 hours (I belive). Are you sure the vote counted up? It still displays the results screen when you click vote even if you already voted.
well isometric tiles in 2d engines could make hills without any real 3d
You can see this in AOE2 (I dont remember if it was in AOE).

I finishing Up my Tile Engine control as i type this (2 more days at most, just need to tie in the animation objects and the mouse mapping and refine the blting function a bit (Change a few things over to globals, cut out alot of crap etc).
it does basic height, and supports every isometric tile system (I have three coded, + normal rect)
I will be posting the completed version in a couple of days.

come on guys, if you want this to work, you really have to start thinking about this kind of stuff.

Why don't you begin work on the engine. We need this done before we can begin to work on anything else.
Are we going to use DX8 or DX7? Will we want to do true hills (DX8), or just fake it with oddly shaped tiles and lighting (DX7)?
Or else you could always begin the graphics.
