The Washington State Senate, by Resolution 1994-8662 proclaimed March 1st, 1994, as "St. David's Day" in the State of Washington. Citing significant achievements by the Welsh in building the state and its industry over the years, the resolution states that the Welsh have played a major role as pioneers and innovators in Washington. A group of representatives from the local Welsh communities met with Lt. Governor Joel Pritchard at the capital for the official proclamation. A delegation from the Puget Sound Welsh Association, led by Alan Upshall, participated in the early-afternoon ceremony. The complete text of the resolution follows:
WHEREAS, The Washington State Legislature recognizes and honor all residents of Welsh descent and proclaims March 1, 1994, as Saint David's Day for the celebration of their Welsh heritage; and
WHEREAS, Wherever people of Welsh descent congregate, March 1 is observed as St. David's Day in tribute to their patron, Saint David, who died on that date in the year 589; and
WHEREAS, Over the centuries, large numbers of Welsh people migrated to America searching for properity and freedom. The history of the United States is filled with Welsh names, both in places and in people. Many became national leaders. At least sixteen signers of the Declaration of Independence and five United States presidents were of Welsh lineage. The coal mining industry of Washington State, in areas such as Black Diamond and Renton, relied on the mining skills of Welsh immigrants, and the Welsh have contributed in many other ways to the successful development of Washington State; and
WHEREAS, The traditions and heritage of the Welsh have, and continue to, enrich the culture of our society throughout our state and it is fitting that Washington State and its residents join in paying tribute to Saint David and the accomplishments of all Welsh Americans.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That March 1, 1994, shall be known as Saint David's Day and all citizens are encouraged to honor the Patron Saint of Wales and the accomplishments of all Welsh-Americans; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the Senate immediately transmit copies of this resolution to Alan Upshall, President of Puget Sound Welsh Association.
It's St David's Day, of course, Mawrth y cyntaf, March 1st.Quote:

a, b, c, ch (yup, it's one letter), d, dd, e, f, ff, g, ng, h, i, l, ll, m, n, o, p, r, rh, s, t, th, u, w, y
vowels = a, e, i, o, u, w, y
w a vowel ?

WOO!!
sorry for the welsh lesson!
We have a funny language too (yes, I'm on a quest ! ;) )
Try to pronounce this :
Papegaaieoog, zeeeend (it does exist), borstschot, koortsmeetsysteemstrook.
Go on, you can do it:D
it depends how you pronounce your letetrs, for example, in welsh, ch is a single letter, and pronounced as in the scottish "loch"
ch here too but all the rest is pronounced as a single letter.
Haven't twisted your tongue yet ? :p
how would you say it? Where are you from?
well, it's kinda caught around my tonsils at the mo
It's dutch but hey, it is said to be not so easy to learn.
For me, reading welsh is a mindboggling experience. ;)
I still can't get around that "w is a vowel" thing. :D
and I speak it every day :D:D:D I love my language, it's funny watching other people learn it. It's not all complicated though! cat - cath, dog - ci, bird - adar, very easy ;) It has similar gramatical rules to french, eg endings of verbs, and tenses. BUT, letters mutate! There's 3 different types of mutations! Meddal (soft) Trwynol (Nasal) and Llaes (it's spirant or something, can't remember that one). P, T, C, B, D, G, LL, Rh, and M mutate afetr certain words! It's because welsh was spoken before written, it's always easier to speak it. Mutations make the words flow, so we don't hafta keep forming new, harsh syllables at the beginning of each word (aren't we lazy ;))
try saying cath bach - little cat and cath fach (f is said as v, it's b mutated) which one is easier? well, for a welshman, anyway.
so piyari...how has your day been??
da iawn diolch, beth amdana ti?
