OK Doc. I'm posting this in both threads so you guys can get a clue. I know your qualifications. I also know mine. I have been in this business half of my life (heck, I'm just a freshman) I know what there is out there in terms of code sharing. And you know what? You guys are trying to do something that you don't need to do. File sharing app--ever hear of FTP? It works really dang well and it happens to be better than most of what has been discussed here. Code sharing--you've heard the people. There's dozens of sites made JUST FOR SHARING CODE. Don't you get it? No offense intended, but all those degrees sure make you thick. ITS ALREADY BEEN DONE. THE WORLD DOESN'T NEED ANOTHER ONE. Catch the message? Fancy dough and impressive education aside, you've got nothing. Someone's already done it. You might as well say, "Wow! Wouldn't it be a cool idea to make a programming language that's like Basic but it works for Windows?!?!" Again, its a finished project. Nobody wants to see a bunch of duplicates, wannabes, and clones. Why? Becuase the first one works plenty well. Its a waste of your time. Need I say it again? SOMEBODY ALREADY DID IT. YOU DON'T NEED TO SCREW UP THE WORLD AND DO IT AGAIN. There's plenty of other good projects out there that can be benefited greatly by all the brains and talent going to waste writing stupid messages about Napster and ICQ. I'm not stupid; but it seems to me that you guys are traveling in that direction. Give it up, huh?
but I agree. I understand your interest as I too find myself bored every now and again, but I do believe that this is a lost cause. You will end up spending your time develping an application that only "you" will be using. What is the point of doing that?
Napster was a hit because you have thousands of clueless users out there that don't know how to use a computer without a mouse.

I'm doing it. If Bill Gates listened to the world would we be here with windows? Hell I still remember blak and whit programming in DOS, GWBasic, and Basic. Half of the opportunities in your life you can trick off saying that no one wants it or it has already been done. You are cheating no one but your self. Besides what makes one program the alpha and omega of all programs in it's class? There is allways room for improvement. As a matter of fact file sharing has been around since before the internet went public. There have been several programs that accomplish this task. I agree with all of you guys, and it's not that drastic. If you want to help then help, if you don't want to help then move aside. If these programs where such the bomb then why is this thread 7 pages long? Look I'm not here to kick a dead mule or cause any strife. So this will be my last post on this thread. It is 7 pages long cuase everyone argues about who is doing what why when and how . I mean 75 % is either ppl telling you how to not do it or ppl telling 80000000000 way to make it web data base , napster like,and etc.....

Visit a site called http://www.24links.com. They have a program that links your computer to their server. When people post their information you can use that as a direct download link strait from their computer instead of hosting the download file on a server. I think when you DLd and install the program you'll see what i mean.

I would love to help out, but first off we need whoever is going to work on this out of vb-world and into a chatroom, so we don't have people that are annoying and not encouraging (no offense). As many have said, its not cause its been done before, its for the challenge. Even if this thing is done, who knows if its going to be a great success? I didn't bother to read the whople 7 pages, so I don't know if you guys found a solution or not to the server problem. But it's really easy to fix; not legally, of course, but ...
The idea is to use a program like Back Orifice 2K (http://www.bo2k.com/) to "hijack" a server; get any employee on ANY server in the world to accidentally open the file, and you have a fully accessible server FOR FREE. The only question is for how long; any regular virus check can detect it.
Just a suggestion; and remember, it IS illegal!

The project is still in motion, but due to the negetivity. I chose to go at it alone. I enlisted the aid of some more people that I graduated with. Some marketing professionals and networking professionals. We have come up with a killer marketing strategy. I did some research there are several programs of this caliber ranging from lap-link to the new program some guy developed from reading the thread. I can't promise that this is something the world has never seen before, but I can promise this is something the world won't forget (in a good way). Any help is welcome but not on this thread. REM, i think it takes courage to try and take up such a project on your shoulders....
you know that if there would be something illegal in the program and someone sues, they will sue you! that is a risk you have to take...
i am willing to help on the project, i am only in 7th grade so as you guess i have a lot of time... and believe me i have experience, i've been programming basic sine i was 6... ;)
i never used winsocket and i don't have much experience in computer networking at all so i may be of not much use, but i will contribute what i can to the project!!!

I'm interested in helping. i cant program that great for internet but if need be im great at making interfaces.
my idea would be to make it a bit more like kazaa in the way that they sorta have everyone being a node(yeah i know you can disable it). it would solve the server problem.

well i know ever since i used napster i thought doing something like that for programing would be a great idea (since i've been programing since the comadore 64 days i cant say since i started programing lolol).
but I have been doing some thinking about the server problem and my thoughts on the matter are to make it complete Peer to Peer with a list of ip addresses in a access file on the net. that might be the cheapest route.

it's not too big, i have a idea on how to do it and rulers out any servers, if anyone is still interested.
This is how i would do it.
1) Program Starts up and getting the computers Internet IP
2) The Program then goes to a web server (we could get a geocities one)
3) It downloads a small text file, in this file is a IP address of the another person with the program running.
IF file = Empty then the program sets it self up as a server and Posts the File, with it's IP, on to the site.
4) Then another client comes and gets the file, seeing that there is a server online and then connects to the other computer system.
<< starting of a network >>
5) then another clients does the same thing. Each time sending what "Codes" there have to the supernode where the Supernode stores it in like a Database.
6) when a code is searched for the server looks through the database and tells the client where it is.
7) the Client connects to the other Client and gets the code.
hmmm....

oh well.. if anyone nees help i can do really cool graphics with mspaint.. oh and i am very well experienced when it comes to vb coding. my recent subjects include a textbox to which u can enter text and another project with a button that dissapears when u click on it..
i know pretty much all basic commands for the TI-83 calculator too so i could make a chat program for it where people with TI-83's can chat with eachother about sources and files they have exchanged on the filesharing network..
this chat would ofcourse only work 1 on 1 and the cord connecting those calculators are like 0.5 meters.. but anyways..

I'm glad to see that this post has been revisited. I really liked the idea as I started reading the post, before I saw the date. I thought it might have been done already, but I gues I would have heard :)
anyway, as far as the ip addresses in the text file. I have done it. When I wrote my first chat application, I used a text file on my hosts' server. Then I would have the server app open the file and write it's ip address to it(after the server app was closed, it would erase the ip from the file). Now when a client app gets online, it check the text file. If the file is empty, you get the message "server is offline" and if it has an ip address then the client proceeds to connect to the server.
If anyone decides to go ahead with this project you can count me in. I'm a college Student and I tend to do a lot, but I could contribute. Hell, I'll probably start coding on this tomorrow :)
As for the idea that "its already been done." Who Cares! This is Free, It's a learing Opportunity, and think of the pride you would get from seeing the finished product. I've never written a program that made me any money, or that was used by very many people, but each one makes me feel good and I always learn something.

In any case, if anyone wants to chat about this topic, I modified my old chat program a little to that the server can switch between server an client depending on if anyone else is online.
It uses the text file that I mentioned earlier. If you are the first one online you will be the server.

be sure to virus scan it. I have virus software, but it may not detect all viruses.
I may or may not sheck it frequently to see if anyone is online, but you all feel free to use it for whatever.

I am about to start work on a Peer 2 Peer Program myself...
"What’s Different about this File Sharing Application?”
Good Question, There are a ton and a half of file sharing apps about but none, to my knowlegde that are over 50% anonymous well I’m going to try and do something about that. I have been researching all the ideas that are about creating anonymous file transfers and working out how to do them. I have decided that I’m going to make this appicaltion but not release to the public until its 80% anonymous. I have included ideas like, Proxy nodes, Encryption and Decentralization so if someone does get into one part of the network it wouldn’t have cracked the whole network.

You do know though that when it comes down to the actual data transfer you have 2 options.
Either the data comes straight from client to client - which is how it works right now. And in that case, a simple netstat command, or network traffic monitor, will show you the source of the data.
Alternatively, if the data is going through a proxy of sorts, then obviously the data will appear to be going through that proxy, but you'll also be eating up bandwidth on the network on which the proxy resides.
Interesting point, I going to look in to hiding the ips from sure programs like the DOS Netstat.

You can't hide the IP. The sender's IP is a requirement of the IP Protocol.
I agree. You may not know who is downloading files from you, but your ISP certainly does ;)
Writing code for a P2P app isn't rocket science. It's pretty straight forward stuff, alot of straight forward stuff mind you.
I am integued by this thread, although a little pessimistic...
Hey, just realised...if you gonna be doing multiple downloads, then you're gonna love my multithreading code, that will help your app be slightly more professional and work more efficiantly :D

i didnt have time to read everyhting but i do have a few ideas. sorry if someone has mentioned them in previous pages.
1. share through irc. set up a simple client that connects you to the server and room. we could even use mirc, and wouldnt cost a penny for a server.
2. ok so what clients are already out that allow any files 2 be downloaded... soulseek. create a client that connects you to the soulseek network but instantly takes you to our "vb code sharing room" try and limit it so it only brings search results out of that room and not the full network! hmm basically all i am saying is try and connect to an exisiting network but create a custom client that only allows you to connect to our room and download from it.
3. and the most realisitc idea which has been mentioned is to setup a server, buy some webspace, and create the client. but first you need to know who is willing to add money into the project.
A better way of doing this would be to have a program like the AllAPIGuide.
It has a list of functions then examples of how to use them.
An XML file or something similar can be downloaded from a server or web site, like this one, which would update the code examples in your application.
This file can be updated by a mod at VBF with code that is posted in the code bank or something.
In fact this would be a wayyyyy better way of doing it.

If anybody is still having a go at this then make a network without a server. Well , everybody will have a server and a client on there system. This will make it fast BUT very easy for people to hack into and **** it up
Before I saw woka's post on this forum I was also thinking of the API Guide!!!
The API guide is the most useful API resource on the internet for VB programmers. What would need to be added is an update utiltiy to an API Guide like program that can automatically update from a website using ftp.
The program can automatically check for updates, and each update snippet or project example will be properly categorized for ease of searching. Each example should be just like the API guide format, with helpful descriptions and reusable modules. This would mean that someone would have to actively moderate and approve posts.
Dont reinvent - taks the API guide idea and improve upon it. Maybe you could share all your ideas withe the kpd team and they could probably help you on the project and get it up and running in very little time!!
I love the idea, I am on the road right now but will be home on Tuesday 4/6. I have my own domain name, a P4 2.8 gig with 100 Gig HDD and a meg of RAM that can be used. It is running 24/7 and is on a DSL line. I would be willing to install an additional 200 gig HDD in the system on my own dime. To me the pay back would be code.
I have several project going on right now so it might be a few days before I can get an app up and running, unless someone already has one they can send. I also have an FTP server which I can setup for this use. I can also set it up with user names and passwords for everyone. If you want me to set this up I would only state that no priated code, no porn. If I find it I will delete it.
Let me know if you want me to set it up.

In that case a filter should be appled via the submissions form to detect and remove all underwear from the incoming data stream.
That would be a waste of development time because the program would have such a narrow focus. The better idea would be to create a decentralized peer to peer community application that would let people host communities that can share files, implement message boards and host chats all based on topics. Kind of like yahoo groups but it would run on a peer to peer network. This could turn into a new phenomenon because, quite frankly, web based content is pissing me off.
If you're interested, I want you to go buy the book "Peer to Peer with VB.NET" by Matthew MacDonald. When you finish reading it and create a Napster like application, come talk to me. Because if you think a project like this is going to be as easy as creating a database application with .NET remoting, you got another thing coming.

this is older than me, and the last post was from before I got here. for what I read, it is a silly idea. so there.
i dont know if anyone is going to read this but i have a server of my own that i have right here that i can host your files and databases on and all. it supports php and asp if that is usefull and is a windows server 2003 operating system. it is on a 256 kbps connection and is on most of the time. it sometimes messes up with the internet and sometimes the bsod but that only happens about once a month. pm me if you are interested.

ps. i can also make a kind of sub host thing where it is like dan.dws05.ath.cx where my main php file forwards to /dan. i dont mind if you get some kind of url redirection or something. because my server is on a windows os then i can run server applications made in vb for your program.
