Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
i like the 3rd person view in th gta games. I think it makes it easier to successfully do a parking-brake turn at high speeds when you can see where you are about to be as well as the direction you are pointing. I think it gives it a car chase feel when you do the rear view also.
But yes i wish they had included the wheel (and hands) like in turismo.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
windshield wipers when its raining would have been a nice touch too, although you never see cracks in the windshield either, so my guess is the view is really more from the hood of the car perspective than an inside the car perspective.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I prefer 3rd person in SA, but that is because I have SA for the computer and can easily use the mouse to modify my viewpoint. Since I have to use a controller for 4, I can't change my viewpoint as easily because using the mouse for looking is so much easier than the joystick. So I usually drive in first person view.
On SA, I would usually have the viewpoint so that I was at a 30 degree angle above the road. This would allow me to see around my car very well. The default view angle in 4 seems to be about 15 degrees or so. It makes it very hard to see directly in front of you because the back of your car is blocking your view.
Both SA and 4 will reset your view if you change it. So if you move the camera so that it is 30 degrees above the ground, within a few seconds of moving, it will reset itsself to the default. With a mouse, this isn't a problem because I would always have my hand on the mouse and would be looking around constantly.
Another issue of the 3rd person camera is that it is too slow on turns. When you turn, it takes too long for the camera to move from the side view of your car to the back again. This results in me driving into another car. Again, with SA, this wasn't an issue because it was far easier to change the camera view with the mouse.
I really wish they would have included a rear view mirror thing at the top of the screen for when you are in first person view. The grand turismo games do this when you are in first person view and it works out very nicely.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Think your right about the slow camera thing...As if driving wasn't hard enough already. Ive found that i have to drive around well under top speed to stop crashing.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I never use the in-car mode. You miss all the interesting stuff going on around you. I like being able to pan the camera around while I'm sliding round corners (and running over goths in a coal truck).
I must admit, I did buy the Offial Game Walkthru book, not because I want to cheat (I haven't read past my current progress in the game), but because it is actually a really nice book. Thats one thing I've noticed about the walkthru books for GTA games, they tend to be fairly high quality and accurate.
Its a bit pricey at £13 but you do get 270 pages and a big map.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Has anyone finished the Flying Rats yet?
This is one thing I liked about SA, the things you have to go around collecting (grafitti, horseshoes and oysters).
Shooting pigeons is a really funny idea. Apparently the molotov is also a good way to get them.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Err ive found one, behind the sign on Demitris club. ithanku
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
It must be impossible finding all those flying rats :D Ive found 3-4 of em.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
It was fun shooting it though. Feathers everywhere!
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I've only found one pigeon so far. One of the deliveries for Little Jacob leads you to a tunnel with homeless people in it (believe it's on the SW side of the NE island).
No go on M16. Not sure how the video got it. I only have 1 mission left on the first two islands (besides Brucie's) and most everyone's my friend... Oh well, time to shut up and just struggle through it, =/
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I got the M16 for the 3 leaf clover mission. I didn't do anything, I just already had the AK assault rifle. When I did that mission, the game automatically upgraded me to the M16 without me doing anything. Now the gun stores and LJ sell me either gun (sucks you can only have 1 at a time though).
I like the decision making of the game. I have no idea if you make the OTHER decision if the game changes all that much, but it makes me want to play it all again and pick the different choices (which I might do for my attempt at a 30 hour completion, because my current game is already running up on 25 hours).
There have been at least 3 times where I had to specifically make a decision on letting someone live or die. I think more of the missions should involve this plot splitting, it makes the game more fun.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I'll have to look again. I don't remember it upgrading me...?
I like the decision making also. The one complaint I have is how easy it is to skip something with no replay feature. I can't tell you how many times my phone has started ringing, but I lost the call while I was jacking a car. Also, alot of the missions seem to have real time scenes. The game doesn't stop or anything. I'm too trigger happy to walk up and listen to anyone. If I have the option to shoot, I shoot.

You would know if you were upgraded, you use the gun pretty extensively on the 3 leaf mission. So if you didn't I wonder if its for some other reason, like the order in which you complete missions or something like that, but that would seem sort of unlikely to me...

LJ is one of the funniest things in the game IMO. Quality.
On an unrelated matter:
One thing that is really nice is that you can call up ZiT and find out what song is playing. The song on the commercial for the game is "LCD Soundsystem" apparently.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I think there are loads of really suttle but nice touches.
Im new to the game really and have only just finihsed the the mission when you have to kill some people in a wearhouse for some tv show. How far am i from the middle island and flying a plane???
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I think you're playing manhunt and there are no planes in GTA4 - only helicopters.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
hehe, ive never played manhunt but it looks like fun.
I c, thats prob why when i went to the airport and got the old 4 stars, i couldn't get in any planes to fly away!
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Finished the game just now.
Great game, altough I must admit i had more fun playing GTA SA when it came out.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I am likely only a small handful of missions away from completing the main missions.. did you do it in under 30 hours? I am beyond 30 now so I will have to play it from the start to beat that, however it should be much easier second time around...
What is your total % complete now?

I have no idea how long this has taken me...can you see that somewhere in the stats page? I think my total progress is around 65%. Now its time to find all those damn flying rats:D

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I have the final island unlocked now. Spent alot of time working on acheivements (chain reaction, manhunt, etc) but will probably get it done this weekend.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I think the last mission I did was "Ill take her" which unlocks an achievement.. they seem to pick sort of a few random missions that you get an achievement for beating..
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Ah I see now that my play time is 34:16:22, so shouldnt be impossible at all to beat under 30 hours. Any particular reason why you want to beat it under 30? An achievement?
By the way, is there some secret to finding the pidgeons all over the city? Seems impossible to find them :(
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
yes there is an achievment for beating all the main missions in under 30 hours.
I dont think there is any specific method to the pidgeons. I believe it is just some sort of "extra credit" type accomplishment (you don't even get an achievement I dont think). They are just randomly all over the map, I have found about 4 or so.. you could always ask wossy for some tips in his walkthrough book that he got.. it might have some.
One thing that I found a bit weird.. I got in a random car one day, and the game told me it was the car "stevie" was looking for, however it didn't tell me where to bring it, and I couldn't remember who stevie was, and he isn't in my phone. I might have accidentaly skipped a cut scene, or maybe I just forget being asked to find this car.. so does anyone know what I do with the car once I find it (even though now I dont remember where I found it originally)...
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Aaah I see. Well then I must beat it under 30 too :D
Yes the Stevie thing! That happened to me too, I had no idea where to take it. I did know though that Stevie is a guy that Brucie tells you about on the phone, apparently he is looking for cars around Liberty city, you might have a text message from Stevie in your phone...however it doesnt tell you where to bring the car :(

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Is there a site you guys know of that tell you about all these achievements you can unlock etc...?
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
You can view the games achievements in your xbox 360, go to the games tab, select achievements, then GTA IV.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Speaking of achievements, have you noticed that there is an achievement called "Let sleeping rockstars lie", where you have to kill a rockstar developer in a ranked multiplayer match?
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Ok cool. I recently heard there was a site with all the things they (GTA IV I assume) didnt want you to know?!? Like where all the rats are and stuff. Has anyone else heard about this or is it just my mate. :)

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I was looking through the Stats page and there is a "Longest Freefall" stat. Mine is currently at 85 feet. I'm pretty sure that was from when I fell off the top of a block of flats. The wet snapping sound of splintering shins was great.
Anyway I wonder how high up a helicopter can fly. Anyone done a really long plummet yet?

OMG they have put "www.vbforums.com" in the game too!!!!! You get banned if you DON'T swear in all your posts :D

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Just thought i would stick it in there for the poor man :)

one of my favorite hobbies is picking my friends (who just got the game) up in a helicopter and then asking them to press Y when I get it as high as it can go.. they always comply without a thought as to what it might do...
I have done it myself just because it is pretty fun... will have to check what my stat is, but i bet its a few 1000 feet..

I unlocked the meet your maker achievement in guitar hero 3, which was to beat one of the devs in an online ranked match.. he 100% the first song we played on expert, so i was a bit nervous, but I picked a song I was good at too, and he obviously wasn't up to par on cliffs of dover..

How far am i from unlocking the use of a helicopter: Im currently doing missions for that elizibeth bird????
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
that means you are on the second island right? You can just go all the way to the south tip to the helicopter tours and just steal one if you like...
You do actually unlock the ability to just use one whenever you want at some point, but I haven't unlocked that yet (might even be side missions that do it)
