now i was merely trying to discuss that issue and to do that, i pointed out some logically based questions. mendhak's link showed me that there were many many assumptions underlying the theories of relativity, most unproven.

my question remains, if you have a particle of electromagnetic radiation travelling at any given speed and add more energy to it without changing its wavelength, does it's velocity increase? sounds like an easy experiment.

Slower, yes, but faster, no, not since a vanishingly small period of time just after the Big Bang.

Also, if you really want to do any "logical extensions" with light, you should look into some of the slit experiment stuff that shows that light can know what is going to happen to it. Basically, at the quantum level, what we define as logic begins to break down. At that level, effect does not always appear to be related to cause anymore. Have fun with that, Einstein never did.

ok i read some articles about time dilation particularly the experiment with the caesium clocks on planes (Hefele and Keating), and they only proved that there was a gravitational time dilation. so it seems to me that there is no actual evidence that differing velocities has any impact on time, that would require an experiment free from gravitational effects.

so then if we think in an abstract sense, is there ever time dilation for particles without any mass?

Your thinking might be too abstract. You look at slow speed results, and casually dismiss all of relativity as some gravitational affect. Now, as for me, I squeeze fish for a living, and have only read a few dozen things on the subject, so I don't pretend to be an expert, but I have to assume that Einstein wasn't some total idiot who was fooled by gravity into thinking that the speed of light in a vacuum was a constant.

As for actual evidence of time dilation at differnent velocities, perhaps you could tell us how much time dilation you would expect to see on a plane traveling away from you at a speed of 500 kmh? For that, you may assume no gravity, and that this plane is miraculously flying in a perfect vacuum.

The time dilation would be almost negligable at that speed. Serious changes aren't noticed until close to .25c, which is in the neighborhood of 75,000Km/s...

good points shaggy hiker, timeshifter and particularly mr Liss, i was after some proof that there is a velocity time dilation and it looks like there is, wow i didn't realise that there was a 3.8 second velocity time dilation over a year for those cosmonaughts!

hang on, that's the predicted time dilation effect, then it has to be adjusted for gravitational time dilation and then tested. I'll assume that the gps systems have to account for both factors and given that the velocity time dilation is significant particularly as time in orbit increases, then that is the best proof of all.

Well it wouldn't go faster. Also we can't call it's a particle (which to me at least indicates that it's matter) because matter can not reach the speed of light because it would gain infinite mass before then.

Rudi, well there appears to be a few issues. the first is the issue of the capability of the mind/software, eg can it do logical operations and multithread. the next issue is can the hardware support the mind?

in the case of the plant, the computer software needs to be supported by hardware that allows high level logic and multithreading. so you would need to have the software supported by appropriate hardware, however, theoretically i see no reason why you couldn't create an interface between a computer and a plant. :)

I'm sure somewhere in here is an innovation that will revolutionise farming.

"Light" is a description. "Light" is merely photons bouncing off of everything else. Yes, photons have mass. Photons "produce" light, if you will. A more correct way of saying that would be they "transmit" light. All particles have mass. So yes, gravity does affect photons. Why do you think black holes are called that? Gravity is so intense photons can't escape.

and that really gets into interesting territory. is a hu man defined by the body or the mind, by the hardware or the software, or by a combination of the two? I would argue that the body as long as it is capable of supporting the mind, is essentially superfluous and therefore does not define humanity.

so a suggestion is that a hu mans may be defined by a range of mental attibutes / processing capabilities not limited to the following examples performed to a particular level:

perhaps :
1. ability to learn
2. ability to communicate

probably:
3. memory short term
4. memory long term
5. ability to perform logical operations
6. ability to multithread
7. level of capacity

Things traveling at relativistic velocity increase in mass proportionally to their velocity. Thus making delta-v more expensive.

Also those same objects experience "Length Contraction" which is interesting in itself.

Therefore if you travel at relativistic speed towards a black hole's EH then you're royally screwed.
