To my mind if you can rehabilitate someone you should because it adds one more useful person to society and that makes us all richer. Of course, you often won't be able to, but executing them closes the door on that option forever.
And before you advocate the death penalty for anyone ask yourself this: "Am I really just motivated by revenge?". If the answers yes then dig 2 graves, the second being for a part of your soul. Foregiveness, as they say, is the greatest virtue.
