Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
it wouldn't even matter, I haven't seen a game where you can get any sort of plane and crash it into a building and actually damage the building. The end result is always the same, your plane blows up, and you start over, building without a scratch...

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I haven't play any of the GTA series since the original GTA III. I didn't like the way guns worked, where you just lock on, and let loose. Did they make it more like an FPS? IIRC, if you got the sniper, you had control of where you were shooting, which is what I wanted for all guns.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I think thats because there is to much else to learn without having to get good at shooting!

Yep, it's all free aim for the most part. There's targetting assistance, but much like the same kind of "centering" you experience in CoD4.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
you can turn off the targetting assistance if you like (I think, unless that is a multiplayer only option)
I find it useful sometimes in certain situations, but a lot of times I find it aims randomly for some reason, and I end up locking onto an innocent bystander versus the guy shooting me...
If you just slightly squeeze the right trigger, you get free aim, then once you aim, you fully squeeze the trigger to shoot. You don't need to use the left trigger at all, which is free aim (half squeeze)/auto aim (full squeeze). It works really well once you get the hang of things, which doesn't take too long.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Combat on the PC versions is far superior. :)
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
there is no GTA4 for the PC though.. not yet anyway
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
No, it'll be six months or so until that comes out, if it's anything like the previous editions.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I just started and I'm having trouble seeing. The graphics seem a little dark.

Just adjust your settings in the game...

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Just played it today for the first time. First impressions.. the graphics got a massive overhaul. Second impression... I remember that city! They did preserve a lot of Liberty City from GTA3, just with the total makeover. Once I started playing, I discovered that the physics are infinitely better. Damage to cars isn't exactly realistic... dynamic, yes, but the cars are incredibly durable. Not sure what they're made out of, but I want a car made out of that stuff. I haven't actually played any of the story.. just kinda driven around squishing people... but it was a lot of fun.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I finished up the LJ stuff last night. No M16 there... Still incredibly convenient though. I have 2 other leads I'm going to try from the center island. The missions are getting to be more and more of a pain. I'm almost completely convinced everything on the first island was nothing but a tutorial. Not going to spoil anything though - just really, really wish I could find a way to unlock the M16.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
why don't you work on your duck and cover versus your run and shoot assault style? I hardly take a bullet on these types of missions when I use the duck and cover shooting system.
If guys are in cars, it gets a bit more tricky, but usually if you can give them one good ram, you can shoot and take out the driver, in which case anyone else in the car will just get out.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Kleinma, now i have GTA, i will be PMing you for some online killing fun.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
This particular mission is a run & assault / cover someone else. You're not on a timer, but the people you are covering will take off to the next spot and you are forced to keep up (regardless of how many enemies are left). If you don't clear them, they follow you... Which means the next area has enemies both infront and behind you. It's a series of allys, so your choices for cover are pretty lack. After the allys, the next area leaves you with no cover and some pretty well armed enemies chasing you. Since you're covering these other people - you gotta square off with them as well.
When you get to the mission, you'll know what I mean.

One thing I noticed last night (took a cab home from the bar and my friend got hit by another car - so I retalliated by repeatedly ramming him with a patriot) is you dont have to shoot at all. Alot of those "chase" missions, I always got in trouble since bullets seem to stray really easy (ecspecially on the Most Wanted missions); even when I was locked on. Turns out, you hit them hard enough or repeatedly hit them - one of 3 things will happen:
1) Their car stalls.
2) You can slam them into something hard enough and send them through the windshield.
3) The driver will get knocked unconcious. << Key
That's the nice thing I like about the changes to the chase missions. It's not about who has more guns or a more durable car - it's who can force the other car off the street and jerk the driver around enough he passes out.

I had to bump mine all the way to two notches bellow max for both.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I have heard from others that it is exceptionally dark in some areas of the game. That may just be due to the fact that it truly is hard to see in the dark. Perhaps a flashlight would have been a good accessory for when you are on foot. I know often times I will hold X to turn on the highbeams when driving at night. That helps a bit.
you could also try calibrating your TV

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Is there a way to increase to volume of the character voices alone and not just the SFX? Looked it audio but didn't notice anything, haven't had a great deal of time to play tho.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I got my copy on Friday. My opinions after about 12 hours of play...
Graphics: Holy crap this game is eye candy. Driving into Algonquin (Manhattan) is just mind blowing. I ended up just pulling over and walking around. I swear this game looks like TV footage sometimes (especially at night). The Mo-Cap on people is really nice, you can run into people and they go flying. Running people over in a fire-engine has never been so much fun.
Driving: Hmm, still not decided about this. The driving physics is easily the most realistic in any of the GTA series (and SA's driving was pretty decent, although it was more arcade style). It's easier to drive within the law because the cars are so much slower and the acceleration is more accurate for the huge, heavy American cars. Driving is much more fun when you've got a car with a bit of grunt. The difference between a crap car (Uranus) and a hot one (Comet) is much more lifelike than in SA. Motorbikes are a nightmare now though, sadly.
Missions: Linear, boring, "drive to here, kill this guy, lose the 2 star rating, drive home again". Like in SA but the storyline is a bit dull to be honest. I'm hoping it will liven up a bit as I progress.
New bits: The cellphone feature is really awesome. That is such a great idea, it makes it easier to remember what the hell you're supposed to be doing when you've been drinking lager all afternoon and can't remember what mission you're on. Being able to call for a taxi, cops, ambulance and so on is ace.
Conclusion:
Its just like San Andreas, but there's no open countryside to drive around. Much better looking than SA, combat system 3 times better. Where did Ammu-Nation go :( ?
Good game. Worth the money.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Nice review there, wossy.
I have to admit that motorbikes are a pain now, though if you can manage to stay on one for longer than 45 seconds, it's awesome. You can chase down the freeway with a bike at mindblowing speeds. Paired with the graphics, I find it quite cool.
Missions are getting boring, yes, though I think that's why they added the "go on dates" to the game. To break free from normal operations, and just hang out with Roman, or any of the girlfriends. I wouldn't know, as I always kill a call when I get one.
I think the Ammu-Nation is replaced by a few gun shops around the city. I found one in Algonquin and another in Dukes. Haven't played enough to see Alderney yet, but I'm sure there should be one around somewhere as well.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Officially the sickest game ever. I jacked a cop car... got into a bit of an accident, and got the cops attention. At that time, some guy ran over to my car and tried to get me out.. but I started moving before he could open the door... he didn't care. HE HUNG ON!!! He was getting dragged on the ground, and I could see him kicking frantically to try and stay on his feet until I finally got too fast for him and he let go. That is soooo freaking awesome!
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
maybe I am cheap, but I just like that you don't have to pay the toll when you are in the cop car ;)
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
One really nice bit of "attention to detail" from the developers is in one mission where you have to call up a guy on his cellphone, if you walk near the guy while you're taling then you can hear his voice travelling through the air normally and also a split-second later you get the echo through the cellphone, from the cell network delay.
Awesome.
I'm about 30% throught he game now according to the stats page. I really hope the story picks up soon. Also where do you get body armour from? I can never find any.

Im at about 30% aswell. I buy my armor either from the gun stores or from Little Jacob.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I usually have issues reading stuff on the cell phone screen. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, if you spin the camera around, the screen gets lighter and darker. Stupid. I think the cell phone screen is being affected by the bloom/hdr overlay.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
I finally unlocked the last island last night and likely have a hand full of missions left to do before I have completed all the story missions.
I get side tracked pretty easy in the game though...
I am hoping you get some sort of garage at some point, even if its only when you finish the game, to store up some of the nicer cars you boost in the game.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
The only decent car i have found so far is the Banshee. Does it get much better than this??
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
i don't really go by their names, just by what they are modeled after.
I have had the porche, the aston martin (could be Ferrari, hard to tell), the corvette, and the most common is the mercedes, which has decent speed.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
(Besides cop) Turismo is my fav car. Low center of gravity, excellent acceleration and braking.
Klein - you had garages all along. In front of each safehouse is a "Resident Parking Only" area. It's roped off by a yellow box. Park something there and save. It will still be there when you load.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
well aware of those.. but i mean garage.. like a paint and spray, fix up the car by parking it in the garage for 2 seconds...
as it stands now, i can park 2 cars infront of a given safehouse, then I have to save my game, spend the 6 hours sleeping, and go back outside for the cars to be fixed up.
The previous GTA games had garages where you could park your vehicles... I think it was Vice City, but you got this whole place that had like 6-8 garage doors where you could store cars...
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Ohh right, forgot about those.
I'm going to have to buckle down and unlock the 3rd island tonight. I haven't picked up the game since early last week (graduation weekend, had to go visit cousins). With AoC coming out this Friday - I'm going to need to beat it soon.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
my best guess is I am about 10-15 story missions from the end of the game..
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
The amount of "glitches" ive experienced sofar is kinda surprising for a quality title like this. There's has been 2-3 times when ive driven to a place, stopped, and after a couple of seconds stuff just pop up (bridge pillars etc.). And another time, the textures didnt appear to load properly so i cruised around in a really low-res texture liberty city for about 5 seconds ;).
And the most disappointing thing, imo, is that the frame rate is often at unpleasantly low levels :(
But of course, nothing is perfect and the cool stuff massively outweighs these small things.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
You must be 360... I have the same issues with mine. Usually happens everytime I do a 180 power slide before the camera catches up. A couple of the cutscenes have shading problems and not minor ones either.
I remember a bar cutscene where I was sitting in a booth and about every few seconds; it looked like the guy across from me pointed a flashlight at my face for a split second. There were a couple other scenes where the shading had all but given up and went into a strobing effect on the corners of the textures. Unless there's some point in the story where it turns out Niko is the second coming of the Messiah... I'm guessing it's a glitch and not some holy aura of divinity.
-
Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
Actually all copies of the game experience the "texture popping" issue. I've seen it on my XBox 360 as well as my girlfriend's XBox 360. It's well documented online that the XBox 360 and PS3 versions are affected (though I heard PS3 copies are less noticeable).
Now if it takes 5 seconds then that could point to a faulty XBox but it typically does happen but doesn't last longer than 1, 2 seconds at the absolute most.
My problem is the targetting doesn't always go to the person I'M LOOKING AT. Very frustrating but par for the course.

Re: GTA IV First Thoughts
who doesn't drive with the in the car view? I find it is the absolute best way to drive around the city at high speed. It is much easier to not hit other cars when you are not in the outside the car behind view...
would have been a bit cooler if they actually set the camera from "inside" the car so you see the wheel, etc... the view now sort of looks like a "from the hood" view, but still, its way better for driving around, with the exception of the motorcycles.
