Also, no offense meant...I slipped...sorry, Justin.
I read the first page and a half of this thread and then skipped to the end. I can see it has deteriorated greatly in the last two pages. At any rate, I'll add my two cents.
I don't spend too much time in Chit Chat. I enjoy answering questions about VB and really don't have the time for Chit Chat. Unfortunately my first experience with Chit Chat was the "Why are Americans so stupid" thread. It was not a pleasant experience. I don't mind people bashing US foreign policy. I do it myself. What bothers me is when people make blanket statements about an entire nation or culture based of "facts" they picked in movies and on TV. I don't care if you are bashing Americans, Chines, Brazilians, or Eskimos. Unless you really know what you are talking about you should probably keep your mouth shut. I've lived in many places in the US. I've lived on the East Coast, the South, and in California. In those areas I've lived in many different cities. They are all VERY different. I have to live in a city for a year or two before I feel like I know it and the people.
I enjoy world politics and I like to watch "The PMs Questions", which we get from the BBC, and I would like to think I know England fairly well. My mother's second husband was a British national, and the guy was an ass (Excuse me: arse). He made Margaret Thatcher look like leftist-pacifist. Not only would I not judge all British citizens by my experience with that man or by watching the Parliament, I would never start a sentence with the words, "All British are...". People who start sentences with "Americans are..." are only showing there ignorance, and yes, immaturity.
Greg
Agree with Greg. I don't like EVERYTHING the USA does but when you start insulting us in a time when there is a high level of patriotism and pride, that is why I get so pissed.
and also stereotyping pisses me off...
And especialy when people are condoning a terrorist group.
sorry, my faultQuote:

Nicely said gdebacker
You seem to know what you are talking about, can you explain to me what immaturity is, and why it should not be tolerated and should why they should not be allowed to speak freely.
I take that you are generally accusing immature and ignorant individuals, on something yet to be defined, obviously you have a point.
I also agree. Too many people start with too little facts. In fact, I could even go a whole night defending Hitler and Stalin, but I won't. The thing is, you can never stereotype. Therefore, the only thing that I can say about Americans are: Americans are different. That is the only true statement. Americans are NOT dumb or MIT/Harvard/UC Berkeley/UCLA/Princeton/Yale/Stanford/... will never exist. I've met many smart Americans, dumb Americans, Cool Americans, Lame Americans, Happy Americans, Sad Americans, etc. There is no way of judging a diverse group from false info or info that you can't prove.
The only person in the world whom I really hate is Osama Bin Laden, but I also realized that his motivation is his religion (and heck, who knows that he did it)? He may not be what we think he is.
I'm getting too far into heretisy...I should stop...<spew>.
Young people shouldn't be free. They need to be isolated and studied, to see what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.
;)
My classmates call me immature because I take offense at the word "deportion" :( and "Communist" :(.
Immature is really defined as:
Taking offense at everything
Acting silly and unadultlike
Not trying to understand others
etc.
Not trying to understand others - Examples:
Stereotyping
Comparing others to yourself
Repeatedly insulting others even after heir feelings are obviously hurt
Hurting others porposely
Using words without caring if the receiver will take offense at it
Repeatedly doing something/saying something after politely/angrily been asked to stop
Sexual insults
 :pQuote:

"Not trying to understand others" i think would fall into the ignorant category. :D
Ok back to the orgional problem. ;) Ive never had a problem with Martin Liss other than the fact that he told me once to get a new avatar.
he's never told me off either; I have no problem with him whatsoever. I find him quite accomodating actually, his PM box and email is always open
It's only people who persist in pushing the boundaries and subsequently get a bollocking who seem to be pissed with him.
I wouldn't go that far.Quote:

"Not be tolerated". I think that as a blanket statement, that is not what I'm saying. I think there is a time a place for it. I think that in the context of this forum, and especially when you are insulting people (Whether you realize it or not) it should not be tolerated. It detracts from the civility of the forum, and as we've seen, it drives people away.
People should be allowed to speak freely but they should also be told when they are out of line. That is part of what makes a society (I see this forum is a society). Would it be beneficial to this forum if I came here every day and started a thread on "Why I think so-and-so is stupid". It has only one purpose and that is to offend. I don't think repeated, offensive behavior should not be tolerated. I see that kind of behavior as immature. To some extent it is behavior that is not fully developed enough to be contributing member of a society.
Greg
Why? Did you have anything inappropriate?
I do like it. Its fast paced and boisterous. I wish our Pres had to do that with the Senate (I don't think Bush would do too well, but Clinton would have been great to watch). Blair really holds his own.Quote:
