This is another oft-said thing that I read, about how Islam treats women so 'well'. I think this is just a difference in opinion as far as what treating women 'well' is. It seems that Islamic cultures think the best way to treat women is to make sure they don't have to worry about earning money and protect them from staring eyes and leering men and so on. To most western cultures, that's seen as a pretty bad way to treat women, because it presumes that they don't want the responsibility of looking after themselves. I think most western-minded women would rather be independant and earn their own living and not be forced into a life of housework and child-raising, however well protected they might be.
'Respect' is a very loosely-used term in this context. You might think that looking after women and letting them get on with child-rearing and home-making (as you presume they want to do) is having respect for them. You might think 'defending their honour' is respectful. To me, living in a western culture and with the very western upbringing I have had, that's very disrespectful because it's implying that women aren't capable of looking after their own affairs and need men to sort their lives out for them. To me, it's respectful to allow any woman to live their life on more or less their own terms (I say more or less their own terms because nobody can live on entirely their own terms, compromises must be made somewhere in life), and not remove their freedom to make their own decisions irrespective of their gender.
I can see that the oppressive way Islamic fundamentalist regimes treat women is a twisted version of what Islam intends. However, my personal opinion is that what Islam intends isn't that great in the first place. Don't take that as an insult to Islam, it's not. It just means I have different ideals.
yeah, dif ideals, thats aboot it (hey im canadian :D)
