School for wizards starts new term
Harry Potter fans in Austria are preparing to attend a real-life 'Hogwarts' witches' school.
Students on the six-term course at Hexenschule, or witches' school, learn how to cast spells and mix potions.
Successful students at the school in Klagenfurt receive a sorcerer's diploma.
The school's director Andreas Sdarchelb teachers want to pass on ancestral wizardry which is gradually being forgotten.
Three classes of pupils study Celtic and Druidic practice, nature studies, astrology, astronomy, meditation and divination.
Mr Sdarchelb, known as the Wizard Dakaneth, says: "Wizardry is very close to nature and it is in no way a religion. The aim is to restore contact with nature, which has been lost by our society."
The school, which opened two years ago, begins the new term on October 15.
Police catch drink-driver after Alcoholics Anonymous meeting
A Canadian has been caught drink-driving on his way home from an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Patrick Livingstone of Welland, Ontario, was banned from driving for 12 months, and fined CAN$1,000, around £430.
The court heard the 70-year-old had driven around his home before finding his son's driveway.
His estranged wife then called the police, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Police say his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
Either that or someone has broken it and not told me
'Fastest wheelchair in the world'
A Swiss company has unveiled a vehicle it claims is the fastest wheelchair in the world.
The three-wheeler can reach 72 mph and out accelerated a Mercedes SLK car at a Dusseldorf trade fair.
The vehicle had been designed by Swiss firm Kyburz, which hasn't yet revealed a price for its creation.
Woman unhurt by train running over her
A suicidal woman has escaped unscathed despite lying in front of a train which ran over the top of her.
The Croatian managed to position all her body exactly between the tracks so the wheels did not touch her.
The driver who could not brake in time was shocked when he looked behind the train to see her running away.
The Croatian daily newspaper Vecernji List reports the woman in her forties laid down on the railway tracks in Gajnice, close to the capital Zagreb.
A railway spokesman said driver Zoran Hajnal told colleagues about the incident. "He felt horrible passing over her with his train heading from Zagreb to Dugo Selo, but a minute later when expected to see a dead body, he couldn't believe seeing her running away."
Police later interviewed the woman, who said she wanted to kill herself because she had lost her job and felt "a failure in life".
Patriotic condoms cause row in US
A US birth control group is handing out patriotic condoms in red, white and blue.
Planned Parenthood says they allow Americans to display their colours proudly.
It gives out the condoms free in return for a donation to the September Eleventh Fund.
Planned Parenthood, a family planning charity, will promote the condoms giveaway in its clinics in Virginia.
"Offering patriotic condoms will hopefully stem the increase of unintended pregnancies while letting Americans display their colours proudly,'' says David Nova, president of the Planned Parenthood office.
Catholic pro-life groups say it's a shameless stunt on the back of a national tragedy.
Judie Brown, American Life League president, told PRNewswire.com: "Last week it was free Planned Parenthood abortions in New York City. This week it's red, white and blue Planned Parenthood condoms in Virginia."
"This organisation is shameless. They have stooped to the lowest level yet in exploiting a national tragedy for cheap publicity and profit."
"So-called 'patriotic condoms' makes light of a terrible event and are a desecration of our national colours.''
That is a very good point Pix... I'm sure that someone will own up (or you will get a brand new bowl).
Catholic father names baby Osama bin Laden
A Filipino man is naming his new baby boy Osama bin Laden.
He was born to Nicolas and Mely Sivellejo 13 days after the US terror attacks.
Despite not being a Muslim, his father says the suspected terrorist is a hero for showing America is not invincible.
The 27-year-old seasonal labourer and his wife, 21, are not Muslims but devout Catholics. Mr Sivellejo is, however, strongly anti-American.
The unusual name caught the attention of Tarlac city civil registrar, Carlos Gatdula, when the parents came to register baby Bin Laden's birth.
Mr Gatdula immediately took the parents aside to talk to them about the implication of their decision, reports the Philippine Star.
But Mr Sivellejo could not be dissuaded from his decision and the baby was formally named Bin Laden Sivellejo.
Mr Sivellejo believes the US government is responsible for breeding "imperialist violence" around the world and claimed: "America is the reason why a lot of people are suffering around the world."
Four mothers claim birth of same son
An Egyptian farmer with 24 children has ordered blood tests so he can be sure which of his four wives gave birth to one son.
Radwan Ali needed the name of the mother so he could register Sameh at school, but he could not remember which one it was.
All four wives claimed to be the mum. He decided to choose one at random, but the jealous women came to blows and two needed hospital treatment.
The school secretary in Alexandria had notified Radwan that the boy's mother's name was unclear on the registration document and it was a mandatory requirement for enrolment.
The boy also told his father he had four mothers, reports Egyptian daily newspaper Algomhuria.
Radwan asked for a court order to get blood tests for all his wives. The boy proved to belonging to his second wife.
When the verdict was issued by the Alexandria Court the woman started to belly dance in the courtroom to show her happiness.
Sameh reportedly said he is disappointed to know he has only one mother.
'Luckiest dog alive' survives 140ft cliff fall
Vets say a dog that suffered just a broken leg after falling 140ft off a cliff is the luckiest animal they've seen.
Henry the retriever-cross fell off the Seven Sisters cliffs, Eastbourne while he chased a seagull.
His owner thought he was dead, but found him swimming to the shore after the sea broke his fall.
Vets have inserted a metal plate and artificial tendons in his front right leg.
Vet Peter Stotesbury says: "He is the luckiest dog we have ever come across. No-one could believe he had survived a fall from that height and undoubtedly it was the water that saved him."
Owner Louise Chavannes says she ran down hundreds of steps and along half a mile of beach to reach him, the Brighton Evening Argus reports.
Ms Chavannes adds: "I couldn't bear the thought of his body floating in the sea and I was convinced he was dead. But when I got to the point where he had jumped I saw his body moving and he was swimming to the shore. I just could not believe it."
Sorry, I thought that these would make some funny reading for people. :D They amused me slightly. :D
They are amsusing :D, but you're posting them faster than I can read them, so I didn't reply before. I like the fastest wheelchair one :)
I guess i'm just a fast poster..... Sorry :(
The wheelchair one is very funny! :)
The Seven Sisters cliffs is a lovely part of the south downs, been walking over them many a time. Extreme fun and pain at the same time if your on a bike. They are basically a set of seven hills ,one after another, very steep, a bastard to go up but great fun going down. the reason I know this as they are only about 30 mins drive from me :)Quote:
