Mornin' all,
Sorry for being absent yesterday, was grappling with Windows ME and a new hard drive.
Whats that? You want to hear a quick rant? Okay, here goes...
Took out old 9gig drive from games computer and dropped in spanky new 30gig 7,200rpm ATA/100 with ATA/100 controller card.
Two hours of pissing around trying to get it to work. It wants to format the drive into 15 helpful partitions of 2 gigs each. I know that the controller has a new BIOS so I can't understand why it's limited by te old one (with the 2gig limit). Finally decided to read the manuals properly (I'm a guy, we're not meant to read them.). The very last page of the 40 page hard-drive manual says (connect this (obscure) jumper if you are using an old BIOS). Thanks a bloody bundle. So I set the jumper and it all detects nicelly and I can format it to 1 partition of 30gigs.
Did you know that ME doesn't let you use the SYS command on any drive but C:. No, neither did I!! So if you want to make a boot floppy you have to create a start-up disk which takes forever to load, and after all that doesn't load the cd-rom drivers (it's an old machine.... it says it's going to load them... but doesn't).
All I can say is thank funk I didn't blow the old hard drive away, managed to reboot onto that and copy WinME disk onto new hard drive. Set it all up again, and then it says "This is an upgrade, insert your old Windows disk to validate" or some such.... but the cd-rom drive doesn't work, so had to disconnect again and copy my Windows 98 disk onto the new drive as well, reconnect, boot and finally got it working.
So sat down and watched "The Pink Panther" (the movie), much happier.

If only they would warn them while they were still students about the evils of testing. That way they could change profession or something. But, now it's too late. Oh well, I might be nice and give him a summer stupid (er I mean student) to actually run the tests.
