you should provide a better interface. this is a screen shot from starcraft(a strategy game from blizzard) it may help you.

They both play SC, and anyways I kinda like their interface.

I didn't say the same interface SC was just a sample for one.
I tried the game out and I saw many clear places the most was on the bottom so why do I have to right-click every unit and bulding to give comands and see it's status?

Thanks for the comments. Behemoth and I (the game creators) both play SC/BW a lot so we're familiar with the interface. The interface for BW would really be applicable to ours, but we are designing another one which will give more functionality.
What resolution are you playing the game at? At 800x600 (what it was originally designed for) there's no free space. At the higher resolutions there's some screen real estate available which we intend to use, but as the amount free differs at each resolution it proving to be interesting designing a scalable interface.
PS - "They" is me and Behemoth (the game coder and graphic designer in that order).
Do you have any other comments on what could be done to improve the game?

Ok, firstly, the right click is getting smarter. It's already upgraded compared to the version that's uploaded. As it provides context related actions I'm eventually going to get around to filtering them based on what you click on. Both the actions you mentioned are already in, but they're not as smart as I'd like. If you right click on your RMV, the option to mine (slurp) is there. If you right click on any unit, you can set it's destination.
There will be "quick menus" in the interface at some point, but as I said, due the varying screen resolutions they would need to auto resize which is going to be awkward. I'm working on it.

I've provided little tutorials for stuff. If you want to help us with this tutorial then provide a list of questions you want answer in the comms forum and I'll integrate into the game next version.
Be sure to check the help screen FAQ's. You have seen the help screen haven't you...? ;)
Next version will be when I get some more graphics from Behemoth. He's got a lot on his plate at the moment but as soon as I get enough to justify a new version, I'll get it uploaded.
hey I get an error "overflow" when I end my turn!?!?!?
and an other thing is that I still didn't manage to build roads,units,buildings can any bodey tell me why?
The overflow is a know bug - I'm looking into that.
Have you checked the FAQ in the help screen to see if that answers your questions?
If that doesn't help, please walk me through process you're using to build them step by step.

darn, your game just messed up my comp, i have no start menu no more...
insaneman, you probably didn't exit the game right, you used ALT+Tap and then Close or CTRL+ALT+DEL right?
I don't belive that they hide the task bar. And anyways the game is two programs, a launcher and the game. The laucher resets the screen resoultion amoung other stuff, so as long as the launcher is running every setting the game changes the launcher will reset.

woah the game lookes great, but i get a run time error 480, autodraw something, is this just a problem on my computer or does this happen to everyone?
Autoredraw problems are commonly caused by either having tons of stuff running in the background or you've not restarted your machine in ages.
Try restarting, then closing down all the apps in the background, and then running the game.
Not sure when the next release will be - I've still had no new graphics from Behemoth....

BUT! There are some bugs (AI -> Division by 0!), takes a lot of time to display the interface...
Any chance of becoming a tester ??? :D

Although I am not on the delevolpement team (i'm just a tester), I can answer a few of ur questions:
slx47, The game is supposed to be simlar to Alpha Centuri. Incase you haven't heard of it, it is a turn-based empire builder.
Photon, Of couse there are bugs, that is what this whole thread is about, finding the bugs. If you help out enough, you will be added to the tester list. They will add you by your vbworld account name, unless you otherwise ask for a differnt name (although if they take as long as they did to change my name, it may be a few months before they change it...). By the way, you posted the same thing twice.
I also have another suggestion ...
Please take out the progress bars they seriously dont do anything for me. My hard drive slows down when its loading.
But without the progress bars many people might think the program locked up (as it often times seems to do on the generating mosters step).
atleast speed the progress bars up.

Right, the game isn't to be like Starcraft as you've rightly pointed out that it's turn based. It's more like Alpha Centauri or Civilisation if you wish to draw comparisons.
Possibly the next game we look at would be a Real Time strategy, but for now this is challenge enough... ;)
There are bugs in the game, it's can't be denied - which is why we need more testers. To become a tester all you need to do is post in here when are where you found bugs. If you're here for a while and really help us to improve the game then you'll make it into the credits. (Along with Gaming_World, PlenderJ etc).Quote:

The progress bars are there to give the user a rough idea of how long it will be loading. Without them it would seem to take even longer when loading and people may think it's hung.
Also, it's not the progress bars that are making the hard drive go mental, it's the huge amount of prep work the game is doing before startup.
The first time Sentience is run takes longer than all subsequent times as it decompresses the required graphics. Once this is done, it doesn't need to happen again. If you've only run Sentience once, run it again to see how quick it loads the second time... ;)

The first loading part i will believe but when generating right before game play, it doesnt do anything, cause i am looking at my resources at the same time. How does it take so long to load anyway its not complex 3d graphics any way. I have gta3 for computer and it doesnt load as fast.
The generating world map scrollbars have an odd flaw in as far as they slow down when the game is run on a machine that wasn't previously running at 800x600.
To see what I mean, set your desktop res to 800x600 before you run the game. Then, run the game and generate a map. The scrollbars go light speed. I don't know what causes this, it's bizarre.
Further to the above, the reason it's not super blisteringly turbo fast is because;
a) It's written in VB
b) I wrote it. Me. Not a whole team of developers in a controlled environment.
c) It's generating a whole new world each time you play
d) It's doesn't have complex 3D graphics, but the engine behind it is extremely complex.
It's also a turn based strategy game, so speed isn't a major issue.
Why dont you do open source ?
Because I don't want everyone else to see/use the source...

Work on Sentience has stalled at the moment.
Behemoth and I seem to be taking an unplanned sabbattical. Recharging the batteries so to speak.
I intend to kick it off when I get back from holiday (1st of next month). Alone if needs be.
Right, I'm back and I'm turbocharged!!!!
By the end of this week there will be a new version uploaded for everyone (who's still here) to have a look.
And when this one is uploaded, I want you all to tear it apart. I'm going to destroy all the bugs in the game in one fell swoop.
I'm going to add in even more cool stuff. Within a couple of releases I want the game to be playable from start to finish even if it is limited in scope. I'll begin to bolt extra functionality on in further releases.
Let's get this puppy moving!!!

Yeah, i still am unable to understand the game exactly, i know you want to do the graphics first but a good help would be advisable :)

If there's anything you wish to know then tell me and I'll add it. Feel free to also send me tips and stuff that you've worked out about the game yourself that we could add to whatever manual we're creating. :)
