Well, Daok - how did you get on?
Where is the patch in your forums, I do not see the link :(
7 posts up attached to my post.
Sentience.zip ;)
It work! For the first time I was able to play Arbiter game!!! Yayay!
:::Daok::: Report for the first 5 minutes of play
1- When you are in the "Pick Player" and you write a name and after you use TAB to switch to the other textbox to write a second name, it will jump to the textbox around 8... You have to fix the tab to jump to textbox1 than textbox2... :)
2- I do not have any sound, is it normal ? I have read the troubleshooting and I know than I have all latest driver and I know than my card can play Winamp and MediaPlayer in the same time.
Daok :)
:)
YAY!
Right, I'll sort the tabs out on the screens. The sound can be turned on in the options.ini in the scripts folder by setting the correct setting to true. This may, or may not stop the game working though. Give it at try and see.... :)
I have an error msg ( not a windows on but one you make ) about mainmenu sound do not exist :(
anything new yet ?
(don't ask... just too much homework to use my comp :-()
nothing new just yet, Icheb, but we're tightening it up as we speak...
Oh right, you turned music on. Turn music back off and let me know.Quote:

(The reason there's no music is because it's too big to include in the download... ;)
Thanks Daok,
Let us know what you think could be added/improved... :)
Hi,
I've been playing Sentience on my laptop over the past couple of days and have noted a couple of points.
In the Mech Design screen, some armour selections add a zero value to the Mech. Is this deliberate? ie only certain armours work on certain designs?
I think the interface is excellent. It handles well and is packed full of functions and features.. yet it's not too complex. - I like it!
Hmm... about the Mech Autopilot / Slurp options.
I think it's a great idea... being able to let the Mech do it's own thing, but under your control. I know this is only an aesthetic issue, but i feel it would make the game interface more consistent... If the actual screen graphics were the same as the rest of the interface when you choose the slurp preferences rather than the standard grey VB screen, this would be a nice touch.
The gameplay itself is smooth and easy to get to grips with.
The tutorial was useful, yet i feel it could go more into how to operate the Mechs etc as this took me a good 10 minutes to suss out in full. - On the whole though great once you get into it.
I'm sure i'll find more to post on here with a little more playing, and hopefully something more useful for your progress.
On the whole, excellent.... i did always wonder what Behemoth's gifs were all about... glad to see it taking form into a great game! :)
Cheers,
Karl
Thanks Karl!
Points adressed in order.....
The armour selections being set to zero is just sloppiness on my part. I guess it should give it at least some (maybe one ton?). That said, if you try and build a mech with no armour - it will complain...
Glad you like the interface. In parts it's not complete, but Behemoth and I are working hard to resolve this. :)
The standard grey VB screen, is because I haven't had chance to make it look pretty. Once that's done, and Behemoths drawn any buttons it may need, it will fit in with the rest.
The tutorial is going to be expanded to a fair degree (which is why you can quit it at any time). I'm having some technical issues with it working on other screens, but that's just one of those things.. ;)
If there's anything you'd like to see in the game, or anything you think can be improved then let me (or more likely - Behemoth) know and we'll see what can be done.
Thanks again!
i can't even install with the sentience.exe file. i get the following error:
"Run-time error 53:
File not found [path]\graphics\run.bmp"
what's that all about?

The Sentience.exe is merely an update to the launcher system.
You'll need to download the GameDev.exe and extract the contents of that. Then, replace the Sentience.exe with the one you've already downloaded.
i.e.
Download GameDev.exe
Extract
Download Sentience.exe
Copy over old Sentience.exe in the recently extracted GameDev folder.
Sentience can then be run. :)
Have fun, and post back with any comments please.
Just a question coming to mind :
In the configuration screen (of the game) you can adjust sound levels ect.
But the buttons and the slide (thingys) themselves look horrible.
So can you remake them in the style of the game its self ?
That should look a way better...
(if you haven't done it already)
Icheb
Hey there Icheb, thought you'd ran off!
Yeah, there's a number of points in the game that need tinkering to look better, but they're quite low priority at the moment.
We're concentrating on functionality rather than prettiness at the mo. That being said, whenever my brains fired on some really technical bit of code I go round tidying bits up.
I'm trying to find a way to make the fillbars look half decent without using a third party control...
Any ideas?
Cant u let someone draw something decent and throw in vb a rectancle over it (like a normal control) and manually program the rest ?
Tried something in ascii :
Or use a specially drawed picture as box, then u can make a ocx or dll out of it and distribute it with the game...Code:0% 100%
======================|=|=====
(just an idea, i know it's very much work)
Icheb
I think I'm going to have to do something similar Icheb... :(
as requested. a list.
its not big and its not clever:
- Start with a positive: I like the new fillbars on the splash screen
- There are no buttons on the main menu (but I think that's just my version)
- Everytime the mainmenu is called, the interface/frame moves on . This looks crap if its already on screen to start with (eg. quit from options menu and after game)
- Background in pre-game menus is still too pale. I'll do you some more.
- When any of the RMVslurp totals equal 100%, no adjustments can be made (even lowering the total to below 100%)
- couldnt slide to approx 10% - slider jumped straight up to 100%
- "building construction" should be under construction yard right-click menu
- attempted to build another construction yard. Building went into my build queue, but nothing came out when the queue was empty. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem.
- You've not put my coloured weapon graphics into Sentience. neither warehouse details, nor build queue has them.
- I like that the pods now have types. Mind elaborating?
- Need to specify which faction intelligence relates to.
there ya go...Its a start.
Points drunkly addressed in order:
There are no buttons on the main menu (but I think that's just my version)
*You mean they don't light up? Correct - that's not done yet..
Everytime the mainmenu is called, the interface/frame moves on . This looks crap if its already on screen to start with (eg. quit from options menu and after game)
*I need another Sentience bar that's a bit shorter off you...
Background in pre-game menus is still too pale. I'll do you some more.
*I only need one 1280*1024 graphic as a jpg.
When any of the RMVslurp totals equal 100%, no adjustments can be made (even lowering the total to below 100%)
*It's in the experimental stages
couldnt slide to approx 10% - slider jumped straight up to 100%
*It's in the experimental stages
"building construction" should be under construction yard right-click menu
*Ok - I'll add that
attempted to build another construction yard. Building went into my build queue, but nothing came out when the queue was empty. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem.
*Once the queue is empty, the building moves to the right hand side of the screen. Then you choose the destination. I know this works!
You've not put my coloured weapon graphics into Sentience. neither warehouse details, nor build queue has them.
*ummm, want to resend them? *ducks thrown object*
I like that the pods now have types. Mind elaborating?
*No. Well, mayber later.
Need to specify which faction intelligence relates to.
*there'll be buttons for that

**no, there are no buttons at all. like I said I think its my version.
Everytime the mainmenu is called, the interface/frame moves on . This looks crap if its already on screen to start with (eg. quit from options menu and after game)
*I need another Sentience bar that's a bit shorter off you...
**err. how is this related?
Background in pre-game menus is still too pale. I'll do you some more.
*I only need one 1280*1024 graphic as a jpg.
**if you're going to resize it, that'll be lovely

**it needs more experimenting then :p
couldnt slide to approx 10% - slider jumped straight up to 100%

**ditto
"building construction" should be under construction yard right-click menu
*Ok - I'll add that
**good. you do that

**no, thats not what i mean. what are you talking about "right hand side of screen"?
You've not put my coloured weapon graphics into Sentience. neither warehouse details, nor build queue has them.

**no. Thats you screwed then, isnt it?

#Just your menuframe.bmp graphic.

# It contributes to the ****ness.

#shush - I'm not bundling 4 massive graphics with the test version. In the go-live then yes.

#Look buster, I KNOW that bit works. You're clearly not doing it right. Firstly, you add the building to build queue. Then, when it's built, you go back to that screen and choose it's exit point. Once chosen, the exit point will vanish from the drop down. next turn the building WILL appear.
You've not put my coloured weapon graphics into Sentience. neither warehouse details, nor build queue has them.

#No, that's YOU screwed. You draw the graphics pal.....

Merry Christmas, pal. *hic*
Let's not be forgetting about Sentience here people!
There'll be a new version in the next week or so which will include...
*Speed increases
*Increased stability ;)
*Improved UI
*Special Projects (spy satellite, shielding for buildings)
*Might calculating (how powerful is your faction?)
*Scorched earth (ground that gets damaged in combat)
*Minefields
*Lots of other cool things you'll have to hunt around to find....
maybe a better starting guide ?
i presented the last version (including the launcher) to one of my friends and he really did not understand the game...
I concur...after the problems with the no DirectSound error window being hidden by the splash screen, and that pathfinding bug, I had no idea where to go.
It's not obvious what things do, so I'll have to keep trying I suppose.
The instructions are something that are sadly lacking on the game, but as Behemoth and I are putting all our effort into the game itself, we have little time for the manual.
The is a quick tutorial at the beginning of the game, but the majority of the functionality is not described here.
Eventually the documentation will be available, but until then just click around and see what there is.
Let's face it, in the test releases, we want you to do that anyway... :D
Well, depending on how destructive my testing proves to be, I might be of help with the manual :)
finally someone who wants to begin with the manual...
if needed i would like to help (example; making screenshots). As you might know i'm still not very good at english, but i'm getting better at it ;-)
and that's all thanks to us ;)
Personally, I believe the simplest way to immerse people into the game at the moment is to encourage them to play with it and ask questions.
So, play with it and ask questions :p
Even I don't know how to build buildings properly...
Come on Ben, give me some explicit instructions...
Behemoth,
As per your previous post, why don't you play with it and ask questions?
Hell, maybe you could write the manual? Or some of it?
Just a thought.....
In fact, you were to be putting a website together which would contain an online manual - I remember sending you tons of stuff to put in it.
All,
I have lots of disjointed bits of manual that were written a while back, but they need putting into some kind of order. I'll leave where I'm up to with the code and continue writing instructions.
No, you sent me a handful of disjointed fragments of nothingness, all of which I have kept. In fact I think theres a link on the original web page.
Ok pal, if the question really needs asking, how do I build a building?
aren't you one of the developers ?Quote:

You SHOULD know !!
but ok, it's a work in progress...
BUT : it really needs and advanced intro and a manual so that people can UNDERSTAND it.
Arb : i was thinking (oh no...); is it possible to add a tcp/ip playmode to play over a network ? i know this might be very hard but i could make the game very much more intresting ;) :p
Icheb
forgat in last message : when will the next (playable) version be ready ?
finally...
/me found a big giant fat bug
arb : u should take a look at the 'tuturial' section...
When i start a game and take the tuturial the box with info appears but when that happens the entire map disappears.
then, i just got a nice fat one here which i mentioned before to u :
i turn the sound on because i get a type mismatch (error 13) when i start it up then, if i edit it back i still get a type mismatch.
Good luck with those 2 ;)
(I asked for a playable version ;) )
Icheb
The first is easily fixable - I think I even know what would be causing it.
The second - I have no idea about. Type mismatch you say?
I'll have a play and get back to you.
What do you think to the cool thing when you press "p"?
Nice menu bar at the start, along with the new progress bars. The game looks good, although the pods still don't do anything :(. I also have a few bugs, the splash screen stayed up (even after making a game), on top (screen shot). The second one was that when I resigned from the game, I was put back into the create new game (with the progress bars at max).
Is that cool thing the frame count stuff?
I also got the type mismatch (from turning the sound on). I was unable to take a screen shot, as the error was blocked by the splash screen. By the way, after I got the error, the launcher was left runnning. (and why is the title of the launcher forn Form1?, look in the task bar.) I was also unable to close the launcher after this error.
This error also left sentice running, stealing all my processer power :(.
