I suspect that all of us on this forum would be in aggreement that this sort of thing is wrong and would never be instigators of such violence ourselves.
Where we differ is probably down to having a slightly different emphasis on where our sympathies lie, this in turn being down to personal experience.

Infact, in some ways, it must be worse. If you were going to have no (or very little money) would you rather be surrounded by rich people or by people who are only a little better off. The richer the people are around you, the less well off and the more deprived you feel.

When my wife left her 1st hubby, she was amazed at the types of programs they had. She signed up at the local welfare office and they helped her find an subsidized-apartment, get assistance(called "WIC" here) for her and her son and a local charity even gave her a used car.(it was a POS but it worked)
Between local/state/federal governments and private charities, we spend a ****-load of money on people who need a place to stay or finanial assistance, but you need to be atleast semi-normal to get it. People in boxes don't qualify.

Why should individuals who care take up the burdon of a society that doesn't? Isn't it fair that society, collectively, should assist those people whom it fails?
No...the problem isn't a need to have general assistance available....I'd be the last person to say that....the problem was with his use of a "person living in a cardboard-box'. People like that are sick in some way but with our screwy laws, there is very little we can do. We can't put them in the hospital without their approval because that violates their rights and we can't give them money to live on because they will just drink/shoot/snort it away. So we just sit and wait for them to either die on the streest or become violent so we can hospitalize them.Quote:

I was threatened by a gang of black youths a good few years ago in Reading (they pulled knives on me and a few of my mates). We settled the dispute, but it doesn't stop me from having black/asian mates. Sometimes you have to wonder whether your own prejudices are part of the problem? Just a thought.
