aknisely, so how does that make the notion that God made the sun seem to stand still foolish? From our perspective, the sun moves across the sky over the course of a day. God made the sun seem to stand still in the sky. God could've stopped the spin of the earth to do it, or, as I suggested, he could've also bent light around the earth as it spun. Or maybe he did something completely different. The point is, God knows the laws of physics (or the rules on which we base them, for those who think of the laws of physics as a human institution) far better than we do, since he shaped them. He ought to be able to use them to do as he pleases.

Anyway, The only figure I actually know says that there is evidence of people living on the islands of Japan at circa 10,000 BCE (lets be politically correct). Second, When the Bible was written, the earth didn't spin, and wasnt, spherical. The Sun moved around it, and the earth was flat. Third, everyone knows that if you make a rule or law, you first and foremost must follow it, or the system breaks down. Thus, if god creates physics, he cannot go and break the rules (crossing the Red Sea, etc), or, logically, he will continue to break rules to his whim, constantly degrading the worth of those laws, until god himself is totally and utterly corrupted by his own power. Fourthly, they say that god loves us, yet he creates such things as "Barney", guns, Stalin, corperations, etc.

The Bible was probably written by a bunch of old dead guys who are now sitting up in heaven laughing at us (yes, i know how little sense that makes).

The ancient Sumerians (the first known civilization), had several thousand gods, wrote in cunieform on clay tablets, were conquered by Sargon II, and generally had a very pessimistic outlook on things, due to thier religion, which basically would punish them for any misdeed.

This is a theory I've heard proposed before and for any that choose to accept it, it doesn't really stop them having to understand the theory of the origins of the earth and evolution. If they want to understand life on earth, they must still understand the above theories as if they had happened in addition to why it was created by God like that. The Bible at no stage says the age of the earth, or even how long people have been around for. This 'time people have been around for' is calculated based on lines of geneality. But who is to say people lived the number of years for all this time? I'm pretty sure that the Bible talks about some people living for 100's of years, also life expectancy is changing all the time (and varies between 30 and 60+ around the world at this very time).

On the subject of 'physics/science has proven...':
All physics, and chemistry and other branches of science, and their 'laws' are *theory*. It has not, and cannot, be completely proven. So it all comes down to 'faith' in science, similar to faith in religion.

On the subject of 'Religion is incompatible with Science':
Many great scientists (including Albert Einstein) were/are Christian. Some modern theorys such as evolution are incompatible with Christianity, but most Science, especially here-and-now science, (which is the most provable) is fully compatible with Christian beliefs.

DNA7433: You can't expect Non-christians to believe what's in the Bible. Also trying to convince someone the Bible is true, and thus Christianity is, is a fairly hopeless case - it usually happens the other way.

No solution is perfect and no explanation is complete. The difference with religion is that they proport to offer the perfect solution and the complete explanation. Science is about finding increasingly better solutions and explanations whilst realising that they never will, ultimately, find the final answer. Almost Simon, almost. The format of religion and science as information is similar, they are interpretation models on our environment. There's no implication of any laws that truth has to obey, the laws are for creating context for our subjective minds. The religious people that state a religion is true, are dangerous, the scientists that state science is a mere model for interpretation are openminded. But neither data is in it's way more than mere data.

For there to be any use of either, it has to be applied on a context, what's the use of information without a situation worth to apply it on? We have to live with it, that there's mere subjectivity in this case, and the argument is useless without a context.

I disagree. Science provides models in order to predict and explain our environment. Religion provides models that provides meaning to our lives.

Both attempt to establish a universal and consistant interpretation of reality but, whilst science can be resistant to change, in the end, most scientists recognise that it is an innevitable process. Religion actively opposes change, considering it a bad thing (particularly opposing scientific change more than other scientists) as if you already have the truth, why do you need to change.

Information don't oppose change, it's the religious bastards who oppose change, however i don't think theres a single religion that hasn't evolved over time. information however doesn't evolve so when we talk about evolving information, we have different information all the time, and the least outdated are probably counted in billions

As has been already said, there is no way to prove or disprove the existance/non-existance of god, which is exactly how the system is supposed to work. If we could prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there was no god, no one would follow the religion. On the other hand, if we had god walking around, creating miracles, it would become an everyday thing, sorta like McDonalds, and again, people would look towards something else to put thier "faith" in, and no one would follow the religion. Human nature is fun, no?

First, can you point me someplace where I can find out how they proved that there were people 10,000 years ago?

Second, the bible doesn't say that the sun rotates around the earth, or that the earth is flat. It does say the earth is round at Isaiah 40:22. It also says that the earth is floating in space at Job 26:7.

Third, I agree with you, and I think God tries to break the laws as little as possible, but the parting of the Red Sea and other miracles do not necessarily break the laws.

Fourth, God did not make Barney, guns, Stalin, corperations, etc.

So how do we know when the ancient Sumerians lived?

I did. There seems to be no question.

The book of Matthew was written by Matthew, the book of Mark was written by Mark, the book of Luke was written by Luke, the book of John was written by John. Why do those writers talk about themselves in third person? I think it is fairly common.

I found it. Wow. It's an explanation that spans several paragraphs over three pages. Apparently, it (the creation of Adam) was narrowed down to a specific year... This is without geneologies. Someone had to have been pondering over the bible day and night to come up with this.. I'm going to see if I can summarize it and post it here.

Yes, the people really did live that long before the flood. Does anyone remember the discussions we had earlier about incest (Cain running off with his sister, etc)? Back then, people were closer to perfection and living longer. After the flood, there was only Noah's family. I think that may have something to do with the shorter life spans after the flood.

Sorry DNA you really shot yourself in the foot with this one. Its impossible for humans beings to live for 900 years. It will take several thousands of years of medicinal reasearch to get us to live anywhere near that long. No one can deny that a healthy diet makes us live longer, but not on the level your talking about. With every cellular reproduction, the shielding around the chromosomes in the cells (telomerase) weakens. At around the age of 50 that shield is no longer there and some cells cannot reproduce. This is the process of ageing, not only the ailments that people suffer which is popular beleif. When a cell cannot reproduce, it just dies away. When enough cells die away organs fail, which eventually leads to death. 900 years...is simply not possible.

nishantp, you must not have read Tyger's post, you two might have been posting at the same time? cuz im not saying people are gonna start living 900 years again, that was only in the beginning when we were...closer to perfection, and it was becuase of meat, before the flood nobody ate meat, and none of the animals ate each other, then God said yeah go ahead, eat yourselves, although he did put rules on which animals were ok for eating and which were not.

How do you figure? Basically, here's how it works out:
God made the first human couple. They were supposed to live forever, but they sinned. Because of that, they were going to grow old and die. They themselves lived for several centuries before dying. When they had children, they passed the sin on. As time went on, they moved further and further from perfection, probably because of genetic mutations. Whatever the cause, people eventually stopped living for much more than a century.

After the flood, God did say it was okay for people to eat meat, but that doesn't necessarily mean that people weren't eating meat before the flood. It only means that if they did, they weren't supposed to.

Does it happen on the order of god? What initiates genetic mutation?

The salamander and various lizards that you see today are the dinosaurs, who never became extinct. They just do not live long enough in modern times to grow very big.

Unfortunately, the only evidence I have is the fact that the bible says it. If there is anything else, I don't know about it. Written documents and word of mouth are the only eveidence we have for many events that occurred that long ago, so it's not unusual that there's no other evidence. But there also doesn't seem to be much evidence that people couldn't have lived to be several centuries old back then. So it's not so unreasonable to believe that it is possible.

This is in reply to all the posts concerning animals and why they die. Animals can't understand sin, as nishantp pointed out. But they still die. It seems logical to conclude, then, that animals always did die. With this in mind, it is likely that there were always animals that ate other animals.

Remember the story of Cain and Abel at Genesis 4:1-15? Abel's sacrifice was the meat of an animal, and Cain's was some fruit. God favored Abel's sacrifice.

I'm not saying that everyone lived to be nearly a thousand, only that there were people who lived that long back then.

Here's my theory: Incest is bad because of genetic mutations. People who "keep it in the family" end up recirculating mutations and emphasizing them. If there's less inbreeding, various mutations can be phased out and generally have less effect. Back then, there weren't ao many people, so age limits decreased faster, but slowed down as there came to be more people. This is only an idea I came up with and it could be flawed.

Why would you ignore us? I can think of two reasons: (a) there isn't any proof, and you're insecure about everything you say here, or (b) you don't want to debate.

The former is fine, but please don't discourage people from having a discussion when you criticize me on a procedure about which you know very little.

Ok, let me just say this real quick. I shouldn't have posted the story of Cain and Abel in my last post. It doesn't prove anything about whether animals were supposed to live forever. It takes place after the first human couple sinned. I don't know if anybody picked up on that or not, because I'm posting this before reading any of the posts that were posted since then.

Instead of trying to minimize this sort of non-relating thing, you expand it by trying to infuriate other participants. I was merely pointing this out, that perhaps you might try to take my advice. I guess not.

You said, "notice how they aren't providing any proof when you ask, they just keep on bashing the Bible." Unless you specify otherwise, I'll assume that "they" means anyone opposed to your point-of-view. You have to keep in mind that I'm not Miss Cleo from television, I can't read your mind. Please take that into consideration.

Whether or not you have enough proof for me is my decision. You're supposed to provide as much evidence to support your arguments as possible, and I haven't seen much of that thus far. Just a suggestion.
