Well, the Apple Apples didn't have a GUI, it was the Apple Macintoshes. That GUI was developed by Xerox. Apple was working with Xerox to get the system after Xerox cut funding for it. Xerox was happy to give it away (more or less). Apple worked with MS to bring the Mac to market (or something to undermind IBM). MS just picked up Xerox's Window system and used it.Quote:

and chrisjk just run them over, he he :D
It made Jobs a little upset. *shrug*
MS maybe have released Windows before Apple released the Mac, but neither of them made the GUI. Xerox did.
yes... the book the road ahead and the movie pirates of silicon valley summed up the part about xerox... that part is true, they also stole the original idea for the mouse and sold it to IBM (bastard Gates).. but microsoft is still a fine corporation
that is correct. but again you said MS helped Jobs. so it basically it is their standard. more or less. give Xerox credit though since MS won't.
and when hasn't MS pissed off Jobs. :)
yes... if i recall correctly Gates got Jobs to trust him just long enough to steal his idea
Threads like this make me do something I should not do.

Simple minds like simple answers - the reason why we have Congress, Microsoft and Clinton/Bush
This applies (simple answers) to both sides of what I've seen floating here.
I've been paid to code or manage coder-types since before the Beatles were popular.
The reason most of the people who post on this 'BORED' have computer-related jobs is because of
Microsoft.
Why?
Because about 30 years ago, computer companies 'competed'. Because of proprietary interests,
there was no reasonable way to get Sperry data (12-bit byte) over to IBM without major surgery.
There was no such thing as a zip or tar archive. Nobody had a distributed data or multi-platform
concept. Oracle was the first big player in this area - they were a VMS & UNIX shop, but saw the
value of PC's.
What we have now is a kind of monopolized standardization of a lot of aspects of data processing, platforms, and transfer.
This means that when one of you game folks writes code it runs on a lot of machines. Where do ID & BLizzard release first?
Since you like competition so much, let's pretend it's 1983.
You'd have to write your game in about 20 different assemblers just to get about 50% of the PC market - remember MAC, neXT, Acorn, Amiga, Tandy, etc? They all had their
own OS. Most of them were not open like Microsoft OS's. There was no chance in h%%l you could write
portable code even if you could find out how to do it. This is because in a competitive world, you, the programmer
has no say. It's the user who drives the market. And it's MBA CEO folks who have all kinds of wierd ideas about how to protect their investment. Like not allowing anybody outside the company to develop anything at all. People bought Microsoft for a reason.
They played the game - they let us in on most of the OS, provided tools, even provide free help.
The flip side of this is that MS does a really poor development job because they have to be everything to everybody. And to garner repeat market, their products have to be 'improved'. Ad nauseum.
DAO -> ADO, COM -> COM+ -> DCOM, etc. Where are we now - sp5 for VB? sp3 for VC++? And now comes VB.NET...
Instead of adding features to force or induce repeat buys, they should get their coding act together. If we didn't shell out bucks willingly for upgrades, we'd be at Win95 sp8 right now.
The point is simple (see above) - most of you guys need to come together in the middle - and realize where we are. Or go out and actively support GNU instead of bitchin' about stuff you only
came in on at the very tail end of.... Things are Soooooo much better now than 38 years ago it isn't even funny. Yet, in some ways, some new, bad things are with us, big time.
Almost nothing is truly simple, no matter how much you'd like it to be. Calling MS names doesn't get you anywhere. Gates & Co. will eventually fade. And then you can all castigate Linus Torvald or whoever...
Since that is the simplest thing to do.
:p
uh.. er.. eh... MICROSOFT SUX heh heh
jim finally someone i can agree with and someone that has at least some knowledge in their *****ing brains
hey guys! come quick! 2 microsof fans think they know what theyre talkin about!!!
I think you're all overlooking the contribution of the humble typewriter. Apple clearly stole the idea off some poor chap and used it on their own computers:p (though strangely not the Lisa.... that was a good idea  ).
Jim makes an excellent point. Apple only have themselves to blame by not allowing anyone to touch their baby. Sure it makes for a more stable OS as you can vet every graphics card etc. before it is added, Microsoft does not have that luxury.

spetnik, actually 3 guys... don't forget who started this thread.
listen guys this is all my fault, i started this thread not knowing that is going to go that far... by doing so couple of you guys started fighting each other, and things got little bit too personal.
Jim mcnamara - thanks for your input...
CiberTHuG - your posts are more than 50% of this thread, are you done? jesus christ...
there are no winners in this war so why don't we hold our hands and sing a song or something...:D
Old mcDonald had a farm eieio...
anyways i think that Jim mcnamara's post was the best so far... me and Ciber thug fought most of the first page but 3 fans of microsoft and a bunch of dumbfounded dip-****s that are using microsoft but still hate it later we are nearing the end of this thread :'(
1st page? Change ur settings, im still on the 1st page :p
