If I made a joke about Puerto Rico would it be seen as in bad taste? :pQuote:

the post you left earlier was childish and immature.. some things need to be discussed-- and well since you dont LIVE in the US.. the actual subject of ENGLISH ONLY In the United States REALLY DOES NOT CONCERN ANY CANADIANS. so you have no POINT. and above all no REASON to be complaining about what you deem to be 'irrelavent discussion' or ranting **** or whatever the hell it was u called it.
We do have a lot of soldiers who don't speak English. The several that I met were all Puerto Rican. I mean they made it all the way through Basic Training and don't speak a word of it. I don't have a clue how they did it.Quote:

yes i am aware of that. and really you cant make everyone happy. just wanted to make a point that there is a reason-- and that the loathing is widespread-- that definately constitutes a problem.Quote:

yes because then you would be personally attempting to insult me. rather than contributing to the discussion.Quote:

So if I'm getting what you're saying, your valid point is that all Americans should learn the language of every other person in the US. Is that correct? So I need to speak essentially every language on the globe?Quote:

And why do I need to know or give a damn where Puerto Rico (or anywhere else) is? When I care, I can look at a map.
no. thats not what im saying-- i said in my earlier post maybe one of the top 4.Quote:

manadrin, spanish, and what was the third i think arabic.
the point is not knowing where PR is.. its just knowing about the world.
Next thing you know, I'll be posting something like "YOU A DAMN IDIOT!"Quote:

thats exactly the problem though-- american complacency (SP CHK)
I didn't say they adapted. I'm not picking on Puerto Ricans, they were just the ones I came in contact with who didn't speak English. They couldn't do their job because they couldn't communicate so they ended up cutting lawns or something other than what they were supposed to be doing. Someone else had to pick up the slack. We had medics in the hospital who couldn't communicate with their patients.Quote:

dish where deserved.. if you would have read his post- he had a baseless argument and tried to attack one of mine without having a solid ground-- or really no ground at all.Quote:

What are you, the geography police? If someone doesn't feel the need to care where Puerto Rico is (and really, why would it matter to most people?) who the hell are you to tell them they should?Quote:

Get on with your own life and quite trying to tell other people what to do with theirs.
some people dont feel the need to learn more than the language they already know.. and it is a problem for everyone.Quote:

So who has the perfect culture that you would like to be a part of?
Um, I would love to learn more about other peoples culture but I'M TOO DAMN BUSY WORKING FOR A DAMN LIVING, PAYING TAXES AND GETTING OLD TO WORRY ABOUT SOME LITTLE **** HEAD SITTING IN A COLLEGE DORM ROOM WITH NO IDEA WHAT THE REAL WORLD IS LIKE. so I guess learning spanish is on hold until I am old enough to retire. But, hey it'll give me something to read inbetween adult diaper changes.Quote:

you TOTALLY missed the point, it wasnt about knowing where a specific place is. rather, about knowing about the world you live in. im not telling people what to do, im pointing out a problem and how it can be resolved.
Why? Can't I respect the person, without having to digest his heritage???Quote:

Should I whine that you should have more cultural understanding of WWII generation Austrians, and whimper about how you should learn German???
There is always a small number of people that say, do, or are things that you can object to.Quote:
in direct regards to the majority white american population.. they dont look outside the bubble.. some people i met dont even know where Puerto Rico is.. how educated is that??..
I think you really need some insensitivity training.
Or a bib, you whiner!

in that case youre more an idiot than i realized.Quote:

So you're saying that people don't have to change if they don't want to. But you personally don't like the way things are so everyone should change to suit you. Makes sense to me. When you get it to work, let me know how you did it so I can get people to change to how I want them to be too.Quote:

heritage and culture are two different things. heritage has to do with your background while culture is the way you live -- relative to your heritage ;-)Quote:

Oh right yeah, it should be obvious to everyone that when you complain Americans don't know where Puerto Rico is, what you are actually complaining about is that Americans don't know about the world they live in.Quote:

So, what exactly are Americans supposed to know about the world that they don't already, but you do, that isn't specifically Puerto Rico related? What is it going to do for them?
on the contrary. i dont make baseless or falacious arguments my friend. dont twist my words to better suit your own.Quote:

Or maybe you can't follow the discussion properly and feel that insults are going to make you look smart in lieu of any actual good ideas.Quote:

you really have no point, that afterall was not my argument.Quote:

i only used that (knowing where puerto rico is) as a reference. if i said im not going to give you a million dollars until the cows jumped over the moon-- you arent supposed to be staring up at the sky looking for cows.
idiot.
So wait...where's Puerto Rico?
im only pigging backing -- afterall that was your idea in the first place..Quote:

and besides i don't need to look smart ;-) not for you or anyone.
i love the way this has become a personal attack on me and not the actual arguments.
besides no one said you had to agree with them, and quite frankly i have not made any baseless points.
following the discussion -- i think that is the problem of you recent posters-- you havent read the previous post that lead to this discussion -- it was initially-- about american cultural insensativty. which again my point is being proved by you lovely volunteers even now.
You know, I make every reasonable effort to understand the people I come into contact with, not offend them and to communicate with them. But I like where I live and I chose to live here even though it's not perfect and there are things I don't like.
But I don't feel it's my responsibility or even practical to learn about every sub-culture in the US. Much less around the world. That's not even possible. I learn what I need to know about the people I deal with. I don't have time for more and to be honest, I'm really tired of people who came to my country telling me that I have to cater to them. If they don't like the way we do things here, then coming here was their poor decision. I don't go out of my way not to learn about them either.
Keep going. If you say 'idiot' enough times people might come out and agree with you.Quote:

Here's what you said:
So, presumably the problem is that Americans don't know enough about the world they live in. How is this a problem, and what is your solution other than that everyone should learn Spanish?Quote:

no offense MM but I think you need to attend a few more English classes before trying the "holier than thou" routine on us.
i never implicitly said that learning spanish was the solution.Quote:
