I forget.
8.1 or 9beta I think.
I'll check when I get back. ToW requires 8.1 dunnit...
yuhuh, and its a good hour and a half download on a 56k modem...:(
I get 18mb an hour out of my connection. Maybe slightly more if it's put data (and not web surfing).
That places it at about 40 mins. ;)
Run the batch file, or change the shortcut so that it points to the file "divloader.exe" with the command line of "uidemo". SO if you unzipped it to c:\Demo:
Z.Code:c:\Demo\divloader.exe uidemo
I was visiting relatives so I haven't been able to tell anything that's been happening to you guys. Sorry about that. I can tell you this:
The game requires DX8.1. We haven't yet tested on DirectX 9 Beta Build. If that link doesn't work go like this:The quotes should be included.Code:RUN> "C:\ToW Demo\divloader.exe" uidemo
I'm sorry that this has happened to you all, I'm sure we can fit in a little "You need DX 8.1!" error next time. Anyway.... I hope you all get it to work. That's all I can think of right now!
Huh the problem is my graphics card... for some reason it gives me an error when DXDIAG says it's gonna use 3D acceleration...
Does it use Software for 3D games? If so, I'm not sure if it will work. I believe Zaei's made it so it supports only accelerators...
Thats why I should've gotten GeForce for chrismas!!! Oh who am I kidding, I dont celebrate chrismass! So is the next release gonna have ANY ALTERNATIVES?? or will it be another "anti-low-megahertz-sorus" type of demo? lol. I really wanted to try it out but I gotta admit, I dont have the best computer in the world, I would like to call it a "low-megahertz-sorus" type... as in a "DINOSOUR"!!!!

Well Cam, Zaeieieai - I've had a look...
Worked first time, which is always promising.
No crashes when playing around with it (though there isn't a great deal you can do).
I think the camera would benefit from being a little more free moving, the angle was wrong for me.
The framerate took a kicking when you had any effects on screen. As I couldn't generate many, I couldn't see a cumulative effect.
On my Athlon-700, 128mb, 32mb Riva TNT2 the framerate was about 30 normally, 25 with the context menu up, dropping to 12-14 when around the fire.
Right, some Q's:
1) When you select an action from the context menu you get the particle shower from the mouse pointer. Is this there merely to show it off or is it going to do that in the final release?
2) The context menu is rather large relative to the screen even though there's only two buttons on it. Is this going to change/be resized?
3) Is the speed of the game going to be changeable in the final release?
4) Cam, you tutted sighed and rolled your eyes when not everyone got the last release of Sentience working - hope you can see it from my viewpoint now? ;) Quite often the game doesn't work on peoples machines because they merely didn't follow the instructions/prerequisites....
5) When's the next release? :D
Me too! I mean not everybody has a 32MB Video Card!! I have a 4MB Video Card for crying out loud!!!!!!!!
Mines an 8 meg ATI Rage Pro, which barely supports 3D acceleration. Unfortunately, MS decided to scrap the hardware emulation rasterizer for D3D 8, so there very likely wont be a software renderer. Sorry guys, im just not up to the challenge... =(.
Arbiter:
The next demo will be all about the camara =).
As to the framerates... try moving a bit away from the system. The larger the particle on screen, the longer it takes to draw.
1. Just show off stuff, perhaps (or perhaps not =) in preparation for something bigger.
2. It will be resized to make it a bit more intuitive.
3. Perhaps. Its not something that I have thought of before.
4. Hey, it happens to the best of us.
5. Dunno, a while =P.
Z.
It worked, but it was buggy...
It ran very smooth, and looked great, though. :)
The text was covered in garbage... I've seen this in other games before, I think you need a new method for rendering text ;)
(Edit: I've only seen the text garbage in buggy. crappy games, though... so i don't think it's my Kyro2 Video Card. If you're using GDI to render the text, I can probably help you fix the problem... GDI is a pain.)
(Edit 2: Oh duh, I forgot... It won't let me rotate the camera. The mouse, and Del/Insert/Etc do nothing.)
(Edit 3: This time, the mouse let me rotate sideways. I must not have done something right the first time. BTW, there are problems with selecting units and such... if i select to attack a unit, and then to move to it, things go wacky after I attack it.
Also, I tried maximizing the window and it died ;_;)
Its a very good idea to make your own text class... Just like the sprite class, you need to have a text class that blits the text into the screen from a bitmap of each font :)
The text output is just a quick debug thing. It will be fully replaced in the final version.
There also is no Device Reset support at the moment (the maximizing thing). I am working on it.
Unit attacking is also a quick hack. I added it the day of release.

Hum, worked for me (the text), must be your scrappy feature-less Kyro2 :p
Heheh :)
Sorry, the only video cards on the market with more features than mine are Radeon 7500/8500 and GeForce3 cards, and they cost 2x as much as the original list price for mine... ;)
The Kyro doesn't have Hardware T&L and my GeForce2 does ;)
Hey guys come on!!!! If you are going to make a "full" game, you better think of the scrubbs that have "flinstones" computers :D Otherwise you will lose market because thats basically where the majority of game buyers are at.
-Just me 0.0002 cents??
MoMad
Why do you think it's a Pre-Alpha GUI Demo?
That's 4 things that should tell you it's not release ;)
Anyway, as I have just said it's not release quality at all. And Janus we know it's on your side not our game because only you are getting this error! So there :)
And it was a quick hack so it'll be fixed next time 'round.
hehe, no no...
I mean "on the next (demo) release"....
ill wait untill next round because I really want to see your game :D
I hear you did everything in VC and not in VB so I will tolerate all of the little "buggy-bugz" because I know how hard it is to get something started in VC. But in the End, everything should come together rightfully (if u know what i mean) :D You have my best wishes
I would have to say that most gamers have fairly decent video cards. I know for a fact that I have the worst video card out of all of the gamers that I know. In fact, most 3d games coming out are 3d accelerator only. It just takes far too long to put together your own engine these days.
And, of course, since we dont plan on selling this, capturing as much of the market as possible isnt exactly at the top of the list of priorities =).
Z.
Hehehe, I know what you mean!
