The 4kx4k map is so big that i get lost in it =). My machine doesnt have enough memory for paint to increase the size to 8k, so i have to write a data conversion program to do it.

Here are some figures from my spreadsheet of data:
Peasant: 1.62 metres/second.
War Horse: 2.3 metres/second.
Mounted Peasant: 2.02 metres/second.
All of the mounted units are 1.8 - 2.2 metres/second and the ground units are 1.4 - 1.7 metres/second.

Ill keep your numbers in mind when I go to actually doing unit movement, but i will not be using those exact numbers. The units will all move at the same relative speed (the peasent will still move slower than the war horse).

.... i'm back at last.
From what i have seen / read everything is looking god damn wicked. The art is coming on nicely, the models are looking good (the first man that i sa was good the one with a green top and brown trousers, the other one thats being done at the moment wil need a bit more work in areas but its looking good too).
I have like 4-5 weeks at home of school which is the best time to code yet i have nothing to code, please can i get al least some of the engine code off Zaei so i can get to work on it coz i so need something to work on.
Thirdly, WERE GETTING CARRIED AWAY, yeah i agree it is good to have a good know of what we want done where and when for the people story, but i think its gone too far for the developement stage that were at at the moment. We havent even go the actual terrain engine (Zaei's part) done yet for us to even be able to consider huge armies of people, trees, birds, water etc.
Also, nothing seems to have been set down as this is whats going to happen, people have just said yeah that sounds good, and as the thread gets longer ideas will be lost, i think someone needs to start a word document divided into sections like engine, story, charachters, etc and then when someone has an idea it is noted down in the correct section in the document, then we have all the ideas in one place.
And as for Mods and expansions, nice idea yeah, but pleeeeeeeeeease lets get the version 1 of the game done first before we start on expansion ideas.
Sorry for my rant but i think if it keeps going with how it is we may get lost (thus the project fails). Everyone keep up the EXCELENT work that has been started here !!!!!

Well, I'll be going away for an unknown period of time between 2 weeks and 2 months. I'm moving, so my internet connection must be changed, and we don't even have phone there yet, so it'll be a while. Yes, I know it puts a damper on working with the story Jorj. Just try working on the civil war ones while I'm away. I will periodically leave messages, either through VBTrooper or emailing with an engine at my school's library, across the network.
On a lighter note, I was able to crack the Win 98 password screw up security.:cool: Sas knows what I'm talking about. I just installed a program I figured would cause the administrator settings to reset. But I had to use a file splitter and split into a floppy 7 times. Still, I recovered Sis music and installed the network card. The RUN menu app only got so far.

Well I finished a design doc with the help of Jorj, but it's been lost now. I guess the kind of 'official' design doc will be shown when the site is put up, all of the ideas on there.
I had the same problem yesterday, as has been reported by others as well, then spent, oh, 6 hours in the car. I am again, on vacation, until sunday, so not so long this time.

Well, I wont be able to upload the Map thing for a while. My computer needs rebuilding. Thursday night, it suddenly stopped booting, and I eventually had to reinstall Win2K, and format my C: drive. Fortunately, all of the source code is intact (I probably would have taken a hammer to it otherwise). Unfortunatly, everything needs to be re-installed, including DX8, my Vid Card drivers, MSVS, etcetera. You will have to give me a day or so to get everything back in order when I get home sunday.
While in the car yesterday, I came up with another idea. In real warfare, the killing of civilians is looked down upon by everyone. What if, when an enemy killed a peasant, the team that peasant belonged to has thier fighting ability doubled (damage, damage capacity, etcetera), and, if a second peasant is killed, that team gets thier ability tripled. This would only be temporary, but, since units take time to train, and time to harvest food, and mine gold, it would make everyone think twice about killing civilians.
Also, spies could look like peasants. this way, they would probably never see battle, and would have a half reason to be wandering around the town area. The team you are spying on would be able to control your spy, in basic orders, like build, farm, etc, but you could see wherever it went.

As is said before, I'm kind of getting my knees wet in Pov-Ray. It's like VRML, but more powerful, with a built-in scripting language. I've attached a night sky scene with a nebula I just created.
Just rename it to BMP and open it in paint... I'm too lazy to convert it into a jpeg.

To draw stuff in open gl u do this :
glBegin(GL_TRIANGLES); (normal triangles)
or
glBegin(GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP);
or
glBegin(GL_TRIANGLE_FAN);
then u can specify the vertices to draw with
glVertex3f(x coord, y coord, z coord);
then
glEnd();
Note: tri strip and fan require the vertices to be drawn in the correct (a certain) order.
I cant really give u a function to do it coz i dont know how your vertices are stored and for what ur drawing
Does anyone have access to a server that supports ASP (that they can store stuff on?) I've just got an idea to have the whole website database driven, and of course that requires ASP. That would mean all you have to do is login to post a news item, to update the site with a file, etc. If anyone does, please tell me. If not, I'll have to use CGI which is a bit (actually a lot!) slower than ASP, and I'm really out of practise with it.
And dont get me started with *brinkster*. I'm starting work on a local copy right now. And to refresh you on the Q: I need access to a server that supports ASP or PHP, and not brinkster *shudder*. I tried using spaceports, but it was hacked 2 hours after I uploaded my stuff =(

Well, I am back. I was attempting to fix my computer last night, but it is officially dead, and probably needs a new hard drive. But, fortunately, I saved the source code, so I can still do some work.
Psy. The terrain loads a height map into memory, and uses the Röttger algorithm for LOD. At the moment, the loading code is very slow, so i need to do some experimentation. There also isn't any texturing going on, or color, or anything.
I am also working on a re construction of the engine, so it will use DLLs, and multiple APIs. To put it simply, I am writing a wrapper that will contain both D3D and OGL, that can be used without rewriting any rendering code (eg, calls to functions like DrawTriFan() which will determine whether to draw with D3D or OGL). Things like that should make coding easier. When I get the source moved back to this computer, I will do some final cleaning things with the Map code, and post it to the web page, and let you guys know it's there. I will include a zipped copy of the height map (how does 64 megs become 300 some K? =)
To everyone. Dynamic Lighting may become an inpossibility, on the terrain at least. Static lighting on the other hand should be fine, using lightmaps. We can still use it on objects though.

Oh, and about the mage-model. Yeah, I know he looks kind of sucky sucky. It's just that his cape is kind of cool. However, the cape alone takes 2/3 of the total faces. That's why he looks kind of silly. I think I'll fix him up(By redoing the model from scratch :P) and post him later.

Is it possible to slow the movement down? One keystroke turns quite a bit more than I expected.
