I think that it would be ok to do the server in VB.
Yes, I know thatVB is not the fastest thing but as a normal conn to a Backbone is not >100MBit that shouldn't be that a big problem and BTW: DB progging is easier in VB than in Java I think.
I will release a protocol specification of a WORKING and yet IMPLEMENTED protocol that is usable for just about everything.
It has a 4 byte header, what is ok, i think.
Normally I would agree, but you are forgetting one extremely important thing: multithreading. The multithreading in VB is filthy (timers and the API just don't cut it) and we need to support multiple simultaneous connections. Also, we could get our server running on Linux or something so it will be more stable, whereas VB doesn't work in 'nix.
Maybe you remember that a C programmer joined our team.
She didn't post so far but she told me she would like to code a Linux Frontend for OCARINA Network.
I could ask her if she could write a linux server...
BUT there is a way to get good multithreading in VB...
I even managed to create a multisession server in VBDos...
(well that was for max. 254 users at a time but still...)
this server had NO delay if you sent any request...
and BTW: VB is still good in the beginning...so we can implement the protocol easier...
and BTW the protocol is much more important then the programming language the server is done with.
Because the protocol can be ported to any language if it is working once.
When do you think than we will be able to test the IM ?
Never if people aren't gonna stop focussing on wrong parts of the project.

C/C++ isn't a choice because then it isn't cross-platform and the multithreading isn't as smooth as Java. Remember, the server probably won't even have a GUI; if anything it will be one big text box.

if people would just first figure out how the messaging protocol runs (client <--> server) and Peer 2 peer if necessary (for filetransfers and voice chat and stuff) and stop *whining* about other things that aren't relevant at this stage of the project.

Well since no'one here has any sense of server development in Java nor any other real decent language that is portable i think the simple way is just to build it in VB.
which can be later recoded in any other language.
That would severely limit expandiblity, but it's better than no server at all. ;)

In my eyes we can build upgrade modules that can be uploaded to the server via the administration console. Which brings the server down, updates the files necessary and brings it up again...

That would be cool for added functionality, but VB has some intrinsic shortfallings. For example, if we'd do the "create Winsocks as requests come in" VB only supports a certain number of Winsocks (or any controls for that matter) on a form at one time. Unless we'd use the API. At this stage i dont mind if we are bounded by windows and about the maximum objects, well i thought it was 65535 (index is a integer value), so in fact we have to use the api :P

It wouldn't be pure DOS; by DOS I just mean a text-only console. The Java VM needs to run within something a bit more powerful than DOS. :DQuote:

I don't see any problems in coding a VB server that might be replaced by a server written in another language later (WE HAVE TO GET IN THE INTERNAL TEST PHASE first!!!)

We should use the OCARINA board at www.ocarina.de.vu instead of this forum because everybody can read our posts here and everybody can post replies to this forum thread.

2. We could make a really quick-and-dirty VB server only for testing, true, that only accepts one connection and just spews preprogrammed data for testing.
3. There are too many forums there and for me at least and rumor has it everyone else in America the server is slow. :(

The server IS NOT PART OF THE IM!
The server is Part of the OCARINA network backbone while the IM server is a little part of the server prog.
What Ocarina will have more than this IM ?

I'm using 2 RTF boxes, 1 for chat, and 1 for the session.
RichTextBox1.OLEObjects.Add , , "d:\smile.bmp"
is for adding in a picture, but i'll convert it to use a resource or a picturebox. :)

How do you make the chat thing for the RTB? I've got the username bolded, and the chat text non-bolded, but as soon as a new line is entered, with new chat text, the original becomes normal again, no bold -- nothing. :(
