Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I see that if you select a triangle that is a good distance from where you live then the test won't reveal where you are. Here's a test where I selected a server in New Zealand.
http://www.vbforums.com/images/ieimages/2008/07/1.png
Check out that ping figure.
-
Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
620 ms ping that's too low. I thought I'd see if I could get that up some and I've succeeded.
http://www.vbforums.com/images/ieimages/2008/07/1.png
Ping and distance are up there. That's Mumbai, India.
-
Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I haven't been able to beat 12ms, but if i use a different server than recommended, i can nearly match it.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/302867776.png
That's a decent ping for that range.

Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I've just switched ISP. Although we are connecting at around half the 8MB service speed, actual performance has improved about 70%. I am certain my old ISP were using some kind of traffic shaping and I was getting a raw deal . Not that they would admit that.

i am sure mine limits traffic on default sharing ports. I changed my settings to random ports and the performance of bittorrent has increased a dozenfold.

Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I've realised that when I start torrenting, my bandwidth goes from 10MB/s to 2MB/s. Stupid considering that my father pays for the bills to get that speed in the first place.

Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
Happy to live in the country of the free ISP where they don't bother your downloads :D

Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I just upgraded my Netzero service to 3G. I was paying 9.95/month. 3G is 14.95/month. Page loads are noticeably faster. New test shows significant improvement.
http://www.vbforums.com/images/ieimages/2008/12/1.png
Before using 3G my download was 47 Kb/s and upload was 282 Kb/s. I noticed that when I download something the first couple minutes the transfer rate is much better but it eventually settles down to the same speed that I had with the less expensive Netzero service.

When I download stuff off the internet the transfer rate is typically around 5 kb/s. That works out to 300 kb/minute and 18 mb/hour. Sometimes it's closer to 6 kb/s.
There isn't any cable internet offerred where I live that I'm aware of. And you can't get dsl where I live either. You have to go with either satellite or wireless to get high speed internet. I've been doing some internet surfing to try to find an alternative to the internet I have but after I punch in my address it always says that there isn't any service available in my area. Verizon doesn't offer high speed internet in my area and they take care of my phone line so I'm not going to get high speed internet via phone service from anyone else.
I live out in the California desert about 50 miles south of Palm Springs. I'm not ready to pay $ 45 a month for satellite internet. I saw one offer from NetZero for satellite internet at $ 62 a month. I can actually do ok with the service I have since I don't download a lot of stuff. It would be nice to have the pages load quicker though.
http://www.vbforums.com/images/ieimages/2008/07/1.png
I'm really ripping now. I've picked up a whole 2 kb/s! I didn't use the insert image button this time like I did last time. That's why it had [IMG] around the picture.
The test's 45kb/s that is displayed isn't kilobytes per second; it is kilobits per second. Your browser displays things in kilobytes per second.
So,
Test, ISP: kilobits per second
Browser download speed: kilobytes per second
1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits.
So the test is saying you download stuff at 5 to 6 kilobytes per second, which is inline with your browser download speeds.

Average Download: 5145kb/s
Average Upload: 622kb/s
I'd said those tests are pretty damn consistent even though I used diff servers for each.

Thanks for that explanation. I missed that. There's always a simple explanation for everything.
I just noticed that the last speed test I did gave an approximate distance of 1200 miles for a San Diego server. That's way off. San Diego is around 100 miles away in a straight line from where I live near the Salton Sea.

So I used to constantly say Comcast sucks... and their prices do... but up until recently, their normal residential package was a 6mb/768kb line... I just ran another speed test today and came back with a slightly different result...

Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
I was testing my internet connection yesterday using speedtest and I found the results varied a good amount from test to test sometimes. I was testing a little after 2 pm. This morning I was testing around 6:30 am and again just a few minutes ago and my last test had a download speed almost 6 times faster than the fastest download I had yesterday afternoon. 3.00 Mb/s versus 0.53 Mb/s yesterday. Fastest upload yesterday was 0.33 Mb/s. I'm using USA Communications wireless internet. They offer fiber optic service but not in my area.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/966910821.png
I felt the need to edit this post with my faster result since I'm seeing all these incredibly high results from some of you. My 6:30 am result was 2.64 Mb/s download.
Edit entry: One of my tests yesterday had a ping of 349 ms and today I got 16 ms. That is quite a difference.

That's not true!!!!!!!
My download speed isn't more than 500kb/s while I have a 4MB service!
And I'm using ADSL, not cable. :(
Also, sometimes, I don't have any internet (the yellow triangle appears!). Maybe that happens because I don't have a static IP.

Mb != MB
Mb = megaBITS
MB = megaBYTES
One byte contains 8 bits.
So dividing the 4Mb service by 8 you get 0,5MB equal to 500kB.
-
Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
Ooooops! I didn't meant that ! I meant MB!
(My ISP says 4MB/s)
-
Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
No, they probably do mean mbit.
It's pretty much a standard for ISP's to express the speeds in that form, because it looks more.
-
Re: Road-runner high-speed sucks? Post your internet speed here
That's true but in their advertisement they say "Megabytes". Also, every time I have called them to say that the download speed is lower than the speed they promised, they say that the cables they are using to give me internet are very old and need replacement. Also, some days ago, I downloaded something with 1.5 MB/s.

If the laws were different 7 to 8 Mb/s ADSL/SDSL could have been common place for well over the last decade.

There are:
1) Lies
2) Damned Lies
3) Benchmark Tests
It frankly does not matter how your connection ranks compared with others. The salient point is this: does the bandwidth meet your needs? If it does, then it's fast enough. If not, then it needs to be improved.
