beta testers anyone?

Well, Crypt, Matey...tis official...Whatson 1.7 Beta works fine on Windows 2000. :D

Sayin that, did find one more bug for ya...

Did a search for "WinZip" using this version's default settings and half way down the list there was about 70 blank entries (no title or url) then an urless (can you say that? :confused: ) with a title of "hr"...like the format of some search engine was prehaps different and the first thing it picked up on was a horizontal rule...? Hmmm...

You should perhaps put a validation bit o' code in that dismisses any results with blank titles and urls. :)

Better than my current way of searching...i use Google or Yahoo! and type in the whole query string manually (sad I know) I don't even know why. Just don't like search engines I guess...now I ask Whatson...lol that could be your slogan...

I think I will put in a piece of code that if a title is blank it will put the url of the site in the title, sound ok? better than dismissing that search results :).

btw what address do you want me to send you the download cgi to if you want it ([email protected] or you new totally cool Tasmail address lol), it doesn't log the downloads or anything like that it actually an antileech cgi script but I wanted my site to seem techy so I added it in lol.

I only really got the tasmail one to try out your program...i don't expect using it much although I guess I'll check it occasionally. :) Hmmm... have they put in Outlook Express support like hotmail? I expect that MS never told anyone how tho! :(

Yeah, I could add the logging bit myself, but I've got no idea how to make a sctipt erm...stream(?)...a file. I presume it checks the referer page to check noone linked to it does it? :) Think my asp book dicsusses streaming binary files in like chapter 3000 or something... haven't got that far! :rolleyes:

yup I'll send the script to you now, I don't have a clue how it works I didn't write it lol I don't have a clue about perl, but I assume it just checks the reffer against the list of domains you set up for it to only let them download from.

lol I don't think tasmail has outlook express support but I found their pop3 address so I use outlook to check my mail, but I can't find their smpt address so I can't send with outlook.

Erm...yeah...I just figured out their pop3 server...and their smtp server...tis "mail.tasmail.com" on port 25. Both servers seem to actually be running on "swan.tasmail.com", so go figure :)

Can't really test the smtp server here (at work) cos outlook express won't connect to servers outside our crappy firewall, but I managed to telnet into both of them. Retreived your last email to me but I don't know smtp so I couldn't reply :)

I think you can specify as many subdomain names (within your domain) for a machine as you like in your DNS.

Change all the "you"s above to "they". :) I worte it like that origiginally but it didn't sound right :)

yeah I can have subdomains on my domain name, like yourname.yourdomain.com sort of thing, but I just don't know how to set them up to work on the free server which is hosting my domain name.

Altavista have changed their search cgi so the search url is different, so this version posted here won't search altavista anymore also altavista changed there layout which fixed a few bugs (no more need for filtering carrage returns), I have updated it so it searches altavista again:

the download is alot bigger this time because since I made the previous version I have downloaded service pack 4 which has updated versions of most of the controls whatson uses so I have added the controls to the zip for those who haven't update to sp4.

I am getting really bored of whatson, even though the above updated whatson only took 5 minutes to fix, I just couldn't be bothered with it, if this keeps up I'll probably release the source of whatson, and chuck it in all together.
