My father was an immigrant, and learned american english before he arrived. Most of the older immigrants prided themselves that they learned American English, since they Prided themselves that they Became US Citizens. Whether or not "English" is the "Authorized" National language, the majority of the US Population will acknowledge that "Engish" is the language of majority here, and should always be so.
It IS unfortunate that English ISN"T enforced as the National language of the US. It seems that more and more immigrants aren't even bothering to learn it.

I speak 3 different languages apart from english-- when i first moved to the mainland from Puerto Rico the only words I knew were like hello, shuddup, and go to hell lol.. but i wanted to learn.. because I knew where i would end up if i didnt. I taught my mother how to speak english-- and really to live in the US you dont need to speak English, within any given community one can get by and live and succeed without the benefit of knowing English.. and that is one thing i think most people overlook-- to live in the US you dont need to know English-- it just depends on where your priorities lie.
I do have a valid complaint though-- from an American point of view-- is the increasing number of international college students.. somehow i would expect that -- like the UC favors california residents over non-- that US schools would favor national citizens over international ones.. its really quite disturbing.. especially since most of these students dont plan on contributing to the community that offered them the knowledge..

I think that the majority of the Educated US Population have learned another language, since its pretty much required.
And many others know at least two languages having immigrated, or having been the second or third generation in a multi-lingual family.

They don't owe anything at all. They're perfectly entitled to keep speaking whatever languages they like. If it just so happens that they don't find it necessary to learn another language, then if you want to talk to them you'd better be talking English. If that is a problem, it is your problem, not theirs, up until the point they decide their lives would be better if they were multi-lingual.

taco bell, enchilada, burrito is the sum of most 'educated peoples' knowledge of a foreign dialect.. that is to say they don't know it, live it, breathe it, chew it, taste it. there is a difference. Actually as a new immigrant to Canada I have taken extreme pains to make sure that I try to fit the culture and not make the culture fit me. My kids will speak Canadian (and not just for the potentially fatal cross meanings of words. Telling our kids to make sure they walk on the pavement has a very different meaning here than it does in UK!!!!
The US should pick an official language (probably English) and hey presto save this pathetic argument. God forbid they should choose two, look at the problems that causes up here.

I didn't say they adapted. I'm not picking on Puerto Ricans, they were just the ones I came in contact with who didn't speak English. They couldn't do their job because they couldn't communicate so they ended up cutting lawns or something other than what they were supposed to be doing. Someone else had to pick up the slack. You know, I make every reasonable effort to understand the people I come into contact with, not offend them and to communicate with them. But I like where I live and I chose to live here even though it's not perfect and there are things I don't like.
But I don't feel it's my responsibility or even practical to learn about every sub-culture in the US. Much less around the world. That's not even possible. I learn what I need to know about the people I deal with. I don't have time for more and to be honest, I'm really tired of people who came to my country telling me that I have to cater to them. If they don't like the way we do things here, then coming here was their poor decision. I don't go out of my way not to learn about them either.
