Guys:
Being programmers is a benefit to you. Fancy graphics are just the icing on the cake. A game is playable with simple coloured squares (or whatever) for the meantime while you ensure that the gameplay works.
I agree with Rob to a certain degree. A project as complex as this has to be planned meticulously if you want it to take off. Have an idea of how everything works before you start plugging it together. Split it into individual sections (eg movement, combat etc) and work out rules as to how they work. Have a good read through the Sentience thread for ideas.
As an aside, Sentience didn't have quite the strict, structured planning that I'm recommending for you, but this is mainly due to the fact that Arbiter and I have been very good friends for over 12 years now, and we know how each other works and how to get this project completed.
Zaei:
I didn't know you thought so much of Sentience. I felt truly proud reading that. Thank you. Theres still a lot of work to be done, but when it finished, you'll be one of the first to know :D
We all realize coding MUST be first...
And that great graphics is just icing...
But, we do need something, visual, to be as some sort of
a goal to strive for...
Invitro- the pic looks great,
and no this isnt going to fall apart in the next few weeks
we already talked alot in project requests and decided it
was time to get to programming...
if its lasted this far, it can last a lot longer...
Ok that sounds good.. well, if you guys let me know what you need (email me or post) I can start on it right away. Graphics, bars characters.. whatever.
I can even come up with a general visual idea for the game, but I'll need some help.
ok... we need a website, so maybe more people will
wanna join, so like characters and a general idea, ill help
you with any of it just ask...
oh and what program do you use to make stuff like that?
I use adobe Photoshop with Eye Candy plug-in.
The only tool you need... there are others, but were not going to do any 3d stuff.
Ok, I need a list of some kind... what characters we using, is it just the normal zelda stuff?
Have you guys thought about copyright stuff?... name wise.
And whos going to make the site? :)
I'm just the graphics dude ;)
We will almost certinly change the name. I belive it was just a temporary name anyways.
Here is the current list of stuff that we plan on having in the :
Customize clothing (buy?)
Multiple Classes
Multiple Skins
Multiple Genders (M/F)
Many different Items and Item Types and Item Classes
Truly unique items (1/server)
Most areas closed to PVP combat
Areas with harder enemies and better drops open to PVP
EXP amount based on damage done (if one player does 90% damage, that player gets 90% of the exp, and the like)
Different Kingdoms (may cause wars between players, and the like)
May be part of different kingdoms
Healing by potions, food, or a stay at an inn.
Jobs – Give bonuses
Marriages – Gives both players the benefits of each of their jobs, and they share everything that can be shared (gold, storage space, characters, est.)
Death – Lose gold at low-level areas, exp and gold at higher-level areas (items perhaps)
Kingdoms have levels; players give kingdoms percentages of their EXP gain
Monsters respawn after a period of time (will we still reset the servers?)
Some base quests, admen add more in
Allow players to buy horses and wagons. The horses will allow for faster movement, but can’t hold as much. The wagons reduce movement speed, but can hold more.
Other then that, we don't know for sure. It should give a slight list. I belive we were also planning on starting out with a general class, then as you play, you develope more skills, and become spielcelised.
Graphics (some may change, many more will be added):
Horses
Wagons
Kingdom Signs (don’t know what for sure)
Terrain (grass, water, river banks, sand, est.; any terrain reasonable for a MMORPG)
Some basic weapons (swords, maces, pole arms [syces], daggers, staffs, wands, bows, crossbows)
A (some) basic shield(s)
A simple class (for now just a pleasant)
if you don't mind me making a suggestion, and i havn't read all related threads so perhaps it's came up...
http://sourceforge.net/ offers free hosting,CVS, mailing lists, bug tracking, forums, task management etc for open source projects. No offense but you seem fairly disorganized for a big project like this, and sourceforge will facilitate communication, job assignment, bug tracking, testing, and most importantly code management and version control.
Assuming, of course, this project is intended to be open source.
I'm interested in the project and may be able to help in the future, but can't commit to anything right now. I saw a mention of the need for a web developer, that's my fuerte.
-Rob
I woulden't mind doing web stuff but I'm getting sick of it... I do to much web already... so im out for the web, but I will do the graphics work for the web as well... and maybe help with some web stuff :)
I looked over the rules, looks good... 1 problem... what if someone takes a unique item and never playes again... nobody else will have the chance of getitng it.
I can take over web with your guys help...
check out my web(in my sig) and let me know if you
want me too take over the web part (temporarily of course :))
About some one quitting, maybe just after a few weeks of inactivity, they are deleted and then the item is replaced??? I dont know something like that
Since people can get married, it would make sense that they could buy a house. If they can buy houses, it would make sense that, when a player is not connected, they are still in the world, be it in a house, Inn, or just laying around. If this is the case, their items could be stolen. Perhaps, as the length of inactivity increases, the amount of defense against robbery decreases. So, a player that has been offline for 2 months would have a very low defense against thieves, while one that has been offline for a week would not be very vulnerable. Characters in Inns get a bonus to this defense, though it costs money every day they stay there, and houses give the best defense, though they are probably expensive(you could also tax house owners).
Z.
Z. u seem to be on top of it :)
Thats actually a good idea... we can have the character playing when the player isen't.
LOL, yeah good idea...
I think we need to start having live chats or something...
U guys have ICQ?
my uin is 802604, add me and we can chat
mines 124764683 ... I got an out dated version of icq, how do i get the updated version?
How do u add people.?.. My thing has a problem with adding people... I have to search for them, and then add them...
And i cant even search it messes up with an error number...
Has been for several months now..
i can never get ICQ to work, and I would never be on it anyways. This is accully better, as you can then look back on stuff from eriler (god damn spelling).
I like the idea with the players staying in the world. I think that the chance of getting robbed shouldn't go up for a week, and after four months, if some1 trys it works. And also, if someone is attempting to rob you, and you come online, they should fail, and they should be punished somehow (kinda like in real life, where coming online is waking up).
Heres what I put in the rules file I have:
May be robbed while offline; chance of success increases after 1 week; 100% chance after 4 months; if you wake up (come online) during the robbing, it fails and the person attempting the robbing gets punished; inns decrease chance of success, but cost $/day; houses decrease it more, but cost lots of $ to buy, and get taxed $/month.
Let me know of any changes that we can debate for around 50 posts:rolleyes:.
nothing I can think of right now so....
BTW: Isnt this supposed to go under rules?
AND>>>>-------------
Is everyone ok with me doing the website until someone else voluteers to be full time webmaster or something?
Wasn't GuyBrush gonna do it (look under the origal communations thread).
Thats what I thought too, but He hasnt been here for how long? Anyways... I think we should start on a website to show what we are doing and what needs to be done...., and how far we are(for the people that even care) :)
where you guys want me to start the site at, a free server or are we gonna use yours Gaming_World?
for now just use a free server, but me and my dad are setting up some stuff on www.kaynor.net/zelda3/ We just need to take our current sites offline, have them switch servers, upload out stuff again, then setup an extra FTP account.
ok, so what u want me to use?
Angelfire.com
Any other free ones that are descent?
For now it doesn't matter, as we will be moving it soon anyways.
i'd also consider changing the name, you're guaranteed legal problems calling it Zelda anything, or using any characters, plots or idea from the Zelda series.
if you guys can show me you're serious about seeing this project through i'd be happy to host a website for you, and help with any web development issues as time allows.
You guys might want to just delete the other thread, and leave everything in here. It makes things easier for everyone (only have to check one thread for updates, etc).
Z.
Ok I don't mean to be bossy, but this is what were going to start doing. Feed back would be good... ;)
Start posting everything in here.. I think Z has a good point.
Second... we can't use Zelda for a game name. We need to think of something else, so ppl start thinking before we start anything. Also. We need to figure out the game play. Town names, ect. ect.
Then I can start drawing out concept art, and we can start programming. We need to do the planning first. When the planning is done we can post it up in this thread so everyone can take a look at it and see what they need to do.
Ok now whos doing what?
Flame - Website (temp)
InVitro - Graphics and MAYBE music
Game world, what are u going to be doing?
Who else is involved and what can they do?
We need some really good programmers.
What were going to start is with the core engine. We dont need any 3d ****, so its just basic API calls to draw characters on screen and perhaps play sound. Little stuff for now. We can worry about the network crap later.. i think. So who would like to program that?
Now, everyone who is involved needs to reply to this thread and state what their doing! Stickman I know you posted earlier but what are u going to be working on?
Flame, what I want u to do is make website sketch with like paint or something. Even a logic tree would be good to show where things go. U can even use Visio if you've got it. If you dont konw what im talking about look around. Also, I got 3 of the same messages from you saying how to add ppl on ICQ.
Click the Search for user button and type intheir UIN. I do that, and it works with no error.
So how does all that sound? We really need to get orgenized.. and i think this is a good start. After we assign roles to people, we can see where we stand and go from there.
Invitro.. I do program, just not netowrking or anything like that...
I already started a little on the website...
BTW: doesnt vbforums have a chat or something? or did they close that?
AND WE KNOW THAT THE NAME MUST BE CHANGED.... IT IS THE WORKING NAME(name that we work under until we decide on one)
I might be able to get a thing so the tiles(when ur walking/running/riding(horse)) move smoothly across the screen, if I can remember where I put that code...
And Invitro, do you have MSN or AIM??? I have both(and know how to use them...)
Zaei, Howard Stern, if you guys want, you can help out a lil with the programming... :)
The website is http://www.angelfire.com/realm/warel...da3/index.html
if you think I should change something, then please tell me!!
OH, And yes you do sound a lil bossy :p
Ya I got MSN. Look me up at
ICQ: 802604
MSN:[email protected]
invitro was taken ;)
PS: I just want us to get orgenized thats all, ill stop as soon as we figure out what were doing :(
I checked out the website. It looks cool for now. Its just going to be temp so dont put ur heart and soul into this :)
I will, actually start drawing out stuff for the site, .. i suggest a black background theme, that way it looks morel ike a gaming site.
I will also start posting concept art soon, after i start on that
:)
ok... Ill see if your on in a second...
I will try to contribute in the programming area, both gaming and network hopefully ;)
Welcome back stick, seemed like you were gone for awhile...
InVitro:
Your on but away so... When u get on ill probably still be on :p
I plan on doing most of any of the programming, although I have been unable to do many games, due to lack of graphics. I know how to do some networking, but I haven't been able to do a lot (or test it much), due to the fact of a firewall on my network.
I wouldn't say to delete the rules thread, we should just ignore it. If you have the thread in your signature, just remove it, and don't bother to post to it.
Ok I'm back... ummm, msg me again i dotn know where ur message went
lol
kinda new to msn, just got it today
Im just a tad busy with Times of War at the moment, but I will give random bits of advice =).
Z.
I think you will need you own page as soon as possible, so you can put down all the rules and ideas that you want to incorporate, so everyone on the team can look them up at any time without browsing through the thread...
Sorry InVitro, I got off, Ill be back on probably tomorrow or later today, I gtg play Starcraft right now...
And thanks everyone who is volunteering to give advice/help and to all the people that are going to be directly involved with programming/art/web and so forth...
Also, we need to get to programming...
I figure I owe Gaming for the comments and thoughts he's provided for Sentience.
If he wants me around to provide support then I'll be here until your project's finished.
I agree, we need a page first so everyone can go there and check out whats going on and what they need to be working on.
...and with the name that is what I was trying to say before, just din't come out very well. ;)
I agree as well. As I said, I should be able to begin hosting the page soon (but someone still has to make it).
Ill do the pages and everything, just tell me who needs to do what...
As for the name, maybe Z^3
Note: the ^ means to the power of but will be called Z3, or
Z-Cubed (get it to the power of 3, cubed...)
If you look at my program I made ull see what I mean...
Origin of Z3:
Z- Zelda
3- Zelda (3)
BTW: Any one know how to do Sup script or Sub Script on these forums?
If we plan on every releasing the , we would want the name to be copyrightable (I don't know if Z^3 or Z3 is, possibly Z-Cubed).
I don't belive that you can do super- or sub-scripting. (but then again, I didn't find out about the vbcode command until a few weeks ago...)
what kind of scripts are you looking for?
and for the name, I would say we try a creative name that should have nothing really to do with zelda itself. The game is just based on the zelda style of play correct?
Do you have a plot or an idea for a device that you could adapt to form the name? eg. "Sentience" comes from the idea that the machines are evolving into sentience beings. "Times of War" is pretty self-explanatory.
If for example the game is about the quest for a mystical weapon, it could be "Sword of the Ancients", or "The Silver Spear of Destiny". If the goal was to assassinate an evil tyrant and free a country, it might be "To Tame a Land" or "Liberation".You are only limited by your imagination.
Fragments of proverbs or quotes are good too.
Look around in software stores or on the internet for ideas. See what other RPGs are called. Just remember that it has to be easy to pronounce and memorable. These things will keep it in peoples minds longer and make it more popular. Don't take other peoples ideas, characters, names etc. Making your own is far more fun.
Sub- and Super-Scripts. They are such as Z^3, where the 3 is raised above the base line (a super-script), and a sub-script is the oppisite, below the base line.Quote:

subblahsupblah
just use sub and sup inside []'s
Z3
are we going to use Dx8.1 or 7.x or 8.0?
we were planning on using 8.x.
are you sure you want to use DX8? most elements of the game will be in 2d right? so why have the hassle of setting up polygons for it every time? You could still oncorporate D3d for the effects...
well I set up a (really!) basic 2d engine (doesn't do anything but draw the tiles) in Dx8, after that I even had some trouble incorporating real 3d over those, so I really didn't like that too much...
I spent ages composing this for you and you've totally ignored it. Was it not what you were looking for?Quote:

Thanks Cander for this and this, oh and are you
still on the team?
Behemoth:
Will take your comments into consideration...
(maybe "Quest for Glory" :p)
I still think Z3 or Z-Cubed:D
shouldn't it be called diaboli then? :D
Well I thought that would be an english word too. Otherwise I think it would have been written Diabolo... (really not sure about that though, I do not know a word of spanish...)
You are welcome. Im trying to get some more free time. just been very busy lately with projects at workQuote:

Spanish nouns generally end in A or O, depending on the gender. A beign female, O being male. Diablo. You misspelt it. Its not Diabol, but Diablo.Quote:

 (well I should shut up I guess)
