D'Oh. Sorry; I was trying to work out how you got to 1,500lb from 12 stone... I frighten myself, sometimes.Quote:

I just booked our summer holiday, so I have £1,500 less than I had this morning. Two weeks in Sidari.... Bliss. :)
Alex & Jamagei: guess you've never had a mortgage, then...
Heh, was just about to give my debt details (mortgage), but may give myself a heart attack!
I have, over the last 3 years, had no unsecured debt - the first time ever -I left uni with 6 grand owed...
Not yet, but planning on it. Maybe next year (if) when house prices fall a bit. It'll be nice being 21/22 and owning a house on my own. :)
Look at it from the other side, then. I have a £95,000 mortgage on a house that's currently worth £180,000, so I'm £85,000 up.
That almost covers my Visa bill.
Currently a little over 8 grand in debt, will be around 12 grand in mid 2003. Thank you student loan system.
At least I don't have to pay interest over inflation though. I heard they were considering making student loans non-interest-free, which strikes me as a bit dumb. I don't mind student loans (although the means-testing system is a pile of **** - that's speaking as someone who gets treated well by it and sees how bloody awful it is for some people, to the point where they can't carry on with their course without getting expensive commercial loans, so they drop out) but I really object to the idea of paying more interest on it. Not that it will affect me anyway.
I've seen pictures. I hope to be able to see them in person in the next month or so.Quote:

Sheesh
I started uni in 1990, when Student loans first started - although it may seem like a crap system, it is actually very reasonable, both rates wiase, and personnel-wise. I payed it off in VERY small installment throughout my workign life after Uni, and they were OK about missed payments and stuff...Quote:

I think 10K is about normal now for post student debt - and lets face it, if you do programming as a profession, you'll probably spend that down Tesco on a Monday evening ;)
They are some big bits of stone.
I live about 3/4 hour from them.
Amen to that brother! :DQuote:

Well, I still have about £2000 in student loans, and I've got £55.5k left on my mortgage. My visa bill this month is about £1800 - gonna be the first time in my life I'll actually have to pay interest on my visa card!! :o
Wow, you went to Uni? We've got a clever guy on the forumns?
wow
Err, how long have you been programming and WHERE THE HELL DO YOU WORK !??!?!?!?!?Quote:

I agree it's a good system - I didn't say I thought the whole thing was bad, and I was just bitching about my debt like people do ;) - but the means testing they do is very flawed.Quote:

Case in point:
I am an example of someone that gets treated unfairly in comparison to other students, because I get a very good deal. I am in regular contact with and get on well with both my parents. They are divorcees, they divorced about 10 years ago now. Up until the point I started university I lived with my mother, who is a civil servant and earns a reasonable amount but not that much. Not enough to pay much more than the minimum parental contribution to my tuition fees takig only her income into account. My father on the other hand is a pretty well-off kind of guy, a programmer/manager type in a large company. I have his full financial support (if I need it) for my education. According to the means testing system, I am the child of a single parent on a mid-level income, so I get full loan and almost all my tuition fees are paid by the LEA. In reality, I am actively supported by both parents with a combined income that must qualify for the full whack when it comes to tuition fees, and would entitle me to much less loan.
Contrast this with some friends I have had at uni and have left because of this system:
They have very wealthy, married, parents that are opposed to or disinterested in their child taking a degree, even though they are legally adults and perfectly entitled to make their own decisions about their education/career. According to the system they have a lot of financial backing and need very little support from the LEA, so they get very little loan and have to pay full tuition fees. In reality, they are out on their own, and their parents have nothing to do with their finances or their education. Not only do they get very little loan, but they then have to pay full tuition fees out of that loan, leaving them with basically not enough to live on even if they work virtually all the time they aren't studying.
Student loans as a concept is a good idea IMO. Tuition fees isn't if you're expected to pay it out of the loan, it's okay if you get more loan to pay it (I don't mind paying them later), and means testing is one huge balls-up.
Excluding the mortgage, my debts are going down quite quickly thanks to the IT Industry. Thank you Mr Gates, the industry and divvy computer illiterates!:)

Although I'd love to :p
I was just wondering why everyone from the UK, and anywhere else that uses the metric system, describes their height in feet and inches, yet the describe their weight in metric (what the hell is a stone (besides being a rock)? )
stone isn't metric, it's 14lbs
People from truly metric countries put their weight in Kgs. We use a mish-mash of imperial and metric measurements depending on the application and what we're used to.
OK. I get it now. I'd never heard of a "stone" before. Thanks for the info chris :)
No worries.
Also, we and the US are like the only countries in the world that still do distances in miles. Strange.
Doesn't really matter. As long as we get our conversions right there is no problem at all :)
