For your info, jpbtennisman, I got 3 very nice and very free tools, all legally, for programming the Palm. And free access to several GB of online documentation.
At http://www.palm.com/ you can download the SDK for free, which is usable with any compiler that supports standard C/C++ header files.
I have been involved in some Palm development, and I know that it's not that hard to write Palm apps. Desktop apps that synch with Palm DBs are pretty easy using COM (you can use VB or Java or something else for this), although that only works with Windows. You can also write C/C++ code (mainly C++) if you want platform-independence so that you can synch with apps you write on Mac or Posix. Writing apps for the Palm isn't that hard using the right window manager tools, although I've never done it myself.
I image it's similar on PPC but haven't tried it.

Quite possibly. I don't know what your problems were and I can't speak for them but although I haven't owned my PPC for very long, I can tell you that stability isn't even something I gave a second thought to-- usually AvantGo loading up is a tad slow but the same applies on my dad's Palm (Which has also been stable).Quote:

Boscord, we seem to be arguing over multimedia features- both machines are pretty well off I must admit, with multimedia (although it doesn't change the fact that mine is $200 cheaper :D :D), but what about the basic organizational features?
Mine has character recognition (no silly Graffiti to learn, although I've heard that people catch on quickly), a "today" screen telling your appointments, and as I noted above, instantaneous sync with Outlook. As a matter of fact, I was talking with people at school today, and they thought I was nuts for syncing my email to my Pocket PC-- I told them how Pocket PC was a mirror of what I had on my real PC.
Although back on the subject of multimedia-- I think our machines are about on par with each other as far as multimedia goes...but if I had $400 to spend on an organizer I'd get one with a CF slot so I could use 1GB Microdrives...take that Palm! :p
i just went to best buy and checked out a sony clie, let me just say i was VERY impressed.:D

Also, let me just mention that a recent test conducted by PC magazine, the 2 best PDAs were the sony Clie and the HP Jornada.
Of those 2, the Jornada had the fastest sync time. It also had the most memory, was the most expandable, and was also the fastest, with a process that's over 133MHz.

Anyway, I still dont see how you can still go rambling on about PPC being better than my Clie because almost every single one of your arguments got shot down. Example:
Multitasking - Wrong, Clie can
Displays - Clie's better
Online - My Clie has a wireless modem with AOL
MS Office - Wrong again, Clie's got it
Battery Life - Once again, Clie wins
Programming Tools - Oops, guess what, wrong again...
Others - Clies got remote control, jog dial, back, lots of stuff
In multimedia they are both pretty close, the differences primarily being that you have a voice recorder and I have the "remote control" for easy usage during physical activites and such.
As for normal features in the realm of organization, from what I tried on the PPC they are both relatively equal. Both have the ame basic setup, and both are expandable with various programs to add bonus features here and there.
Anyway - I still thing my Sony Clie rules...but whatever...
Anyway - Sail3005 - I like the fact that you tried out the Sony Clie, and the fact that you were really impressed and liked it - EVEN BETTER!

Oh yeah, and mine has MS Office included. If yours does too, prove me wrong, but when I checked the Sony website I saw no mention of MS Office.
My PPC is better than your Clie because I paid $200 less. Maybe you can do the same things as my PPC (except voice recording, and character recognition, free MS Office, and other minor details) but if I had $450 to spend on a PDA, I would have bought a Pocket PC with 64MB of memory, a PC Card slot (which with the proper conversion you can add a Microdrive into, not to mention the new Toshiba PCMCIA Type II 5GB hard drive), and the WORKS. That would show your Palm who's boss.
It's actually kind of lame on Sony's part, as their high-end PDA barely matches up to Casio's low-end PDA.:rolleyes:

Hmm, speech to text? Explain further...this sounds like a real Clie-killer :D

Speach to text: You have the program running in the background, and you can set it so that every time you hold the record button, it listens for your voice. It then basically does a SendMessage call, and outputs the resulting text into your open window.

Dude, you yourself found a PPC on Amazon for $189. It only had a 256-color screen, but it's a hell of a lot better than what you can get from Palm for $189; which would probably be some monochrome POS with 8mb of memory...Quote:

yeah, i know. But it was out of stock and stuff. it looks like i am gonna save a bit more, and lets just say that my new price range is under $300 :D.

A Palm is an organizer. A Pocket PC is... exactly that. Palms replace notepads, while Pocket PCs are laptop replacements. They are very different beasts. There are hardly any comparisons.
My Palm V is pertty solid (just a few required resets, because i love to screw around). It also syncs with Outlook Express without a problem. It also has a C compiler on it. Of course, all of these features are availible on a PPC. The Palm seems a bit smaller, and lighter, judging from what I have seen. Grafitti is, as has been said, piss easy. And of course, the Palm "OK" button is in the correct place.
I have heard that PPC IR ports have limited range (30 cm), while i've also heard about 30 foot ranges for the Palm. I dont know anything about this.
To boil it down, if you want a slimmed down laptop in your pocket, get a PPC. If you want something to put phone numbers in, and play a few games on, get a Palm. As for me, since I can program it, I am happy.

PS: my RIO 500 has a file system. Its not an achievement, and certainly isnt necessary for an 8 meg machine.
Lets just say my PPC can also take down phone numbers and play games.:D
PocketPCs have the same IR range, because with the remote control software I've got on mine, I can change channels on the cafeteria's TV, which is at least 25 feet away from where I sit.

Anyway, I wont argue one way or the other. They have different purposes, Organizer, and PC.
