To go back to one of the orginal comments. No MS did not create XML, they consulted on it along with many other companies. The W3C 'created' XML.
Ms has made no claim to be the inventor of XML.
My notes on the matter.
Windows-Good for games, to make money, and for people who are not computer literate.
Linux- Good for servers, and starting to be good for games(Tribes 2 for instance). It actually is a great desktop, but for very computer literate people that can get past the setup routine.
I am still at heart a big MS user, but I use em both.
:p agreed!Quote:

Well, there you have it. MS didn't innovate XML.Quote:

'Course... I don't think the W3C has really innovated anything. That isn't there job, but that is another point.
So, if MS didn't do XML, what did they do? I can't think of anything.
As to comparing MS to Big Blue... well, atleast they contributed to the cause. IBM has created some great technologies (and some bad ones) IBM has even created some great technologies, but marketed them very poorly...
Microchannel. Who remembers that? That was faster than ISA/PCI, but IBM wanted royalties. Everyone said, "Why pay you for that when this is free."
Microchannel has gone the way of the BetaMax.
IBMs version of Windows (OS/2) was actually more stable than Windows. It had some UI problems, and compatiblity problems, but its kernel, which was orginally the same kernel as the Windows, written when Gates sold DOS to IBM, was more stable. It is possible for MS to make a good OS. W2K isn't all that bad. But MS's priorities are very whacked.
okay,
i'm trying to win the battle and you people are making fun of me, damn you bastards...:D
Well, the only way you can win to come up with some wonderful technology that MS innovated.Quote:

And since you can't do that, we will be quiet and let the silence defeat you. ;)
ok let me ask you guys this. if Gates wasn't in the right place at the rigth time, what do you think the OS would be?
how far would we really be without MS.
would Windoze even be Windozes?
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you guys on most of this stuff as far as Gates taking over the world but you have to hand it to the guy, taking the oportunity and running with it. Like you wouldn't. ;)
and leave it up to you guys to make a smut fest out of another thread. cheers guys
Like I wouldn't? No, I wouldn't. I would be the poor guy at Xerox or Apple that works on something just to have it ripped off.Quote:

The one great oppurtunity that Gates had was being the exclusive provider of software for the IBM PC. Now... there again, is a trust issue, but anyway.
Fine, lets say we get that oppurtunity. That doesn't mean we should buy an OS (MS-DOS) from some guy without telling him we already have an agreement to sell it to the largest PC manufactuer on the planet. That also doesn't mean we should trapse over to Silicon Valley and buddy up to Jobs so we can steal Windows from him after he's gotten Xerox to release it.
Anyway... I digress.
There is an article at Slashdot. It talks about a perceived negative to one of MS's EULAs.
I have to say that these people can jump to extremes sometimes. The EULA in question is for a Beta test. It was written not just to dissallow you from distributing it with a GPLed product, but from distributing it at all. You are writing a program with a Beta SDK. They don't want you to have that unfair advantage over the market. That is fine.
I think we can all come up with a better OS than Windows. Lets call it DOORS. To precede it, we will first develop a shaky command-line kernel called BS(black screen). After several versions of BS, we will introduce DOORS 1.0. It will suk, as will DOORS 2.0. DOORS 3.0 will be somewhat functional, but wont really work well, so we will have DOORS 3.1. DOORS 3.1 will not allow users to customize anything, and be a pain to use. We will then be sued by the Software CO. who's idea we rip off, and lose.
After everyone is used to DOORS 3.1, and convinced that it is awesome (via subliminal msgs in the "About" boxes), we will introduce a whole new line of DOORS, the 1st to be released in late 2005, called 2005 DOORS. 2005 DOORS shall merely be DOORS 3.1, but not everything will be confined to a frame, and there will be a cute little button in the corner that says "GO!" (although clicking it will cause nothing to go nowhere).
2005 DOORS shall be full of bugs, some of which will be fixed in 2006 in a version called 2005 DOORS OSR2. However, 2005 DOORS OSR2 will only be available with new PCs, so many ppl will not get it. We will then start hype about 2007 DOORS, but due to technicalities, hastily rename it to 2008 DOORS.
We will get sued over this product, barely getting it out by the end of 2008. 2008 DOORS will be worse than 2005 DOORS, however it will look better (barely, because it will barely look different). Then, in 2009, we will release 2009 DOORS Second Edition, wich will be a bit better, and we will force vendors to include it with systems. At this point, we will not have to do furthur development, for there is no way to get this far without being bought out by Microsoft.
all u people are bitching about microsoft but ur still using their software.. if ur gunna ***** get linux and learn C
Got Linux, know C. I'll continue bitching, thank you very muchly.Quote:

I'll even go home and post a ***** using Opera on my Linux box. (or I'll install NetBSD on the PowerPC)
Mmmm... perhaps I could write a bit of C that would post the ***** for me. Nah... Perl I think, yes... write a bit of Perl that will post random bitches even when I'm not home.
Yes... and, well, since it will be running on my Linux box, I don't have to worry about it crashing and not posting anymore. *hehehe*
Okay, so the last one was a low blow.
lol... u sound like my sister... she bitches about everything
Skitchen8, finally!
at least one person thinks i'm not crazy, thank you!:D
yeah... almost everyone here has Windows as their only OS... everybody programs in VB... a great majority of these people will refuse to use Netscape so they use IE... yet they still ***** about everything
Cyberthug, surfdemon, what do u think of my idea? Think itll work? :p
And then you insult those of us who actually have a right to *****. :)Quote:

Again, I repeat, find one thing that MS has contributed.
Spetnik, I think you hit the nail on he head. You wouldn't get very far without falling victim to the 3E (or 4E) policy.
Hey, I like bitching :pQuote:

C++ programmer, uses Win98 ;) I would use Win2000 if the damn thing would actually install at all  But that's another rant :p
I would use linux, but I rant more about that than Windows so I'll stick to the lesser of two evils.
'Least your Linux rants are kept to 'its not very user friendly'. 'Least you can't say it has abused it position in the market and removed your choice by bullying vendors and other software manufactures. You can't say that Linux companies don't innovate. You also can't say it sucks or that it won't install. It might be difficult to work with and a bear to install, but the newest Linux dist and kernel will still run on a 486 with 4MB of RAM.Quote:

May not be the most comfortable thing, but W2K won't do it, so you can't complain. ;)
and how many people are still running 486's?? i sold my old one for $10 to my friend
Skitchen, you are a moron.Quote:

I think the Hubble was using a 486 until last year. Now it is on a Pentium.
'Course, I think it should be on a 68050, but hey.
Anyway, can you put W2K on a Pentium-60?
Travis...you have such a subtle way with words....you truly know how to win friends and influence enemies...;) :rolleyes:Quote:

I know im a moron... thats cuz it doesn't sit on its fat ass and play computer games all day like the rest of us dumb ass. y are you so ****ing dumb??
Let's all just take a deep breath and return to the topic of the thread (which is either defending or trashing Microsoft depending on your point of view) not each other!!!!!:) :) :) :p
Katie, with post like these, I find that even a Louisville Slugger can be the most eloquent and subtle of devices.Quote:

Oh, wait....
I think I have found some question repeated over and over again, from many posts ago, Skitty. Yes... What has MS contributed?
And I think the correct term now is... put up, or shut up.
See how I added the subtle emphasis, Katie.
Okay, so it was a little over the top.
well if dumb a$$ didn't call me a moron :'( i would be fine
~*cries in a corner*~
Travis..maybe just a little over the top:rolleyes:
Skitchen...don't cry.....you both have your points..if he doesn't agree with you, it's okay, he doesn't have too....on the other hand, you aren't required to agree with him either...but there comes a point where it's obvious that neither of you are going to sway the other's opinion...unless you have some more substance to your agruments....
would you both, please, shut the hell up???:D :D :D
Get out the corner ya crybaby...come back and fight with the *real* men (and Katie, and any other women) when you're ready :D
j/k
*cracks his knuckles*Quote:

No, I'm not really that mean. Sorry to call you a moron. But your logic was flawwed to say that 486s were useless just because you sold yours for only $10.
Sorry, but we are nearing a hundred posts, and no one will even try to guess at something that maybe possibly MS contributed.Quote:

fine then Microsoft will win and the government is being stupid because w/o microsoft than their would not be any worthwhile software... look at how many games run on windows that aren't meant to ever be made compatible w/ any other OS
What, Minesweeper?Quote:

okay... i see your thoughts... i was simply stating that 486's are not worth barely anything anymore because it is cheap enough to get a better computer.
and ms has contributed the following
Visual Basic
Visual C++
Motocross madness (1 + 2)
Midtown madness (2 cuz 1 sux)
A (i admit unstable but) very usable OS
Visual J++
Is that enough to make you happy?!?!
Its not a matter of money. NASA can afford P-IIIs, or Althons, or Durons. But they can't take the cosmic radiation. They also haven't been run in enough, had the kinks worked out. Can you imagine if we fly the Pentium before they fixed the floating point error?Quote:

Let me see... Visual BASIC is based on BASIC. All they did was work to make it un-BASIC. Why, we already had languages that were not BASIC.
VC++, is just a visual studio for C++, which was made buy some not MS guy, which is based on C, which is based on B, which is based on BCPL.....
In both of those cases, they just made a visual studio. Yeah, I'll give you this. MS is very user friendly.
Motorcross Madness and Midtown Madness? Did they add anything to the genre? Are they cornerstones or milestones? Aren't they also available on consoles?
ShIzO, I am with you.
It is just that nobody gets what I am saying. you look at windoze now and you think, if windoze wasn't here what would the OS look like if you made one. sure everybody has one and are use to it but it pretty much is a standard that everybody uses. I mean like the popup windows and explorer view. what ever you do it will pretty much look like a form of windozes.
would you think of shortcuts and the desktop, would you think of the start menu, ***** look at gnome on linux, it pretty much resembles windows.
CiberTHuG, if your that distressed then take that louisville slugger and hit the damn thing, bet you would turn around and get another one. I do agree with you too, it all depends on which way you look at it. sure hate the guy but you still use the software. And by the way, I work for the county and they use a 233Mhz on there server. so not everybody has a 1Gig.
What has MS contributed?? well your looking at it, a standard for windows platform, but that might be it. and that might be stretching it. I haven't played with a Mac (OS X) but isn't it almost like windows, to a point
Hi Katie, how are things going, monday blues over?? and just think it is only a couple of days away and you get to do it over again, :)
god damnit stop proving every word that i say wrong... just let me be right for once... and motocross madness is the best motocross game ive seen for the pc
Uhm... you are saying that Windows came up with this look and feel? No, they got this look feel from Apple/Mac. And Gnome looks to me a lot like HP/UXs default WM (HPWM?). Hell, X Windows was around before Windows 95, so between X and Mac, the start menu and desktop shortcuts were already in place.Quote:

The look of the explorer window? Looks just like the X file manager I used on CTWM on Ultrix. I couldn't tell you were they came from, but I started using Ultrix in '93.
MS is much more userfriendly then any other OS out there (except maybe BeOS, I haven't used it). But it didn't innovate any of its look feel. It just pulled together from a lot of sources.
yeah but their the only ones that have done it almost succesfully
Midtown Madness 1 and 2 both rule
I have them both coz they're so damn good. All the things you want to doin your souped-up VW Beatle, but can't coz of all those damn pedestrians and pigs on every corner ;)
i downloaded a ferarri formula 1 car... max speed 260... u just mow down anything in ur way
I used the apple in highschool ('85) and I don't remeber any of that. I haven't heard of any of the other ones you were talking about, but I thought win3.x was one of the first ones out. could be wrong though. hey learn something new everyday.
and chrisjk just run them over, he he :D
