You could also become an MVP, in which case you would also get a copy.
who said anything about piracy? there are tons of ways to get legitimate software....some might seem questionable though....IE: getting a friend with a business to go through the program which chris stated, in which case you would be in debt to him....some people can't sleep at night if they are indebted to friends....piracy is piracy though, if you don't support software piracy, then i should hope you don't have a single illegitimate mp3 on any of the hard drives you own....we wouldn't want to be hypocrites now would we?

Dunno, 2010 is a pretty sweet package.
I was looking at the pricing yesterday. Unless you get an academic version of Visual Studio 2010 Pro which wouldn't be proper for most individuals like myself it looks like the next thing up from Express would be Visual Studio 2010 Pro with MSDN Essentials which is going for $ 549 if I remember right and I haven't seen anything below that or an option to get the Pro without the MSDN Essentials. Full MSDN subscription with Pro is over $ 1000.
I'm downloading Visual Basic 2010 Express now. That will probably have everything I need. I bought Visual Studio 2008 Standard only because I needed Visual Web Developer 2008 Standard. The Express version of Visual Web Developer didn't have certain things I needed but Visual Basic 2008 Express as far as I know had everything I needed and am using with Visual Basic 2008 Standard.
I'm not aware of an upgrade from Visual Studio 2008 to 2010 deal that saves you money but perhaps there is one. You guys with the fast internet connections can search quicker and easier than I can. Maybe one day I'll get a faster internet connection. I shrunk a little when jmc posted those links to answer my last question in this thread because I know I could have searched and found that myself. Sorry jmc for my laziness.
sytto, what deal are you talking about where you get Pro for $ 300. I haven't seen anything like that.

I've already installed it, registered it and converted my VB2008 app to a VB2010 app. I made a copy of it and renamed it so I can still open it in VS2008. From what I've seen so far it looks like it's doing just fine and I probably will have no need for Pro. I'll try a Publish to my website soon and see how it goes.

I'm actually not sure how other people would do it. I happened to come across a (dutch, are you dutch?) site (www.surfspot.nl) that sells software for discount prices for students. I can login there with my university account and buy different products (like Windows 7 for €50 or something).
There was also a product called a "one year free DreamSpark license" or something like that. I could "buy" it (for €0) and it would get me a login for dreamspark, and now I can download anything I want from it.
So I'm pretty sure you need to get your login somewhere indirectly, via some site that can verify your student credentials (such as my university login account in my case). I would try contacting your school and see what they say.
Also note that everything you download is for learning purposes only, you cannot sell anything you make with those products.

Re: Visual Basic 2010 beta 2 convert to full version?
Entityx the link gep13 provided is the deal i was looking at, in addition Soma (an MS guy) in a blog mentioned the deal will last until October this year. Unfortunately the trial is 30 days, i requested an extended trial, they sent me a key to extend it 80 days but the key does not work?
Hitting a few forums there seems to much confusion on MS's part, reading about peeps even calling them and they don't seem to be sure about allot of the pricing and deals. Everything you look at pricing wise is all still in pre-order phase as well.
The launch went so well but looks like they dropped the bomb on purchasing part.
Hope this all gets sorted out by the end of the trial.

For anyone interested i found the blog:

I simply changed the first line in the SLN file (from format version 11.0 to 10.0), and I changed the 'ToolsVersion=4.0' to 'ToolsVersion=3.5' in one of the first few lines in the csproject (was a C# project), and I can successfully open + run it in VS2008 again.
This will save you some work...

It does look as if MS dropped the ball on the purchasing side.
