It depends on the writing style one bases it on. For example, the grammar book I use states that the apostrophe can be used for acronyms, and items used out of context.Quote:

Reinstalling Windows can actually make your drive more fragmented.
I haven't tested this on Vista or Win7, but when I do a Windows XP re-installation for a customer, after the OS is done, and I run Windows Update, if I do an analysis on the disk, it is fragmented a good amount, and needs to be defragged.

I don't care that the HDD is fragmented. the performance is usually far more acceptable afterwards.
I find that ppl (Including me in the past) usually spend more time messing about trying to get the performance they want and ultimately chase the gold at the end of the rainbow.
For business critical systems there would be a need to ensure the performance and this would be managed regularly. My home pc’s are used for browsing the net and doing some shopping. I don’t really need it to go at the speed of light. It annoys me when it takes time to boot so when it gets to the point. I re-image the thing. I also run auto updates (Again if it breaks I will look into why and reverse the update)
I don’t have the time to mess about de-fraging and clearing the accumulated rubbish when I could be doing something I enjoy.
In the past I used to do regular defrag and maintenance then I released I was wasting my time, I could have been in the pub or playing my Xbox stuff I enjoy.

Have you considered just running the defrag overnight or while you're at work (assuming you dont work from your home) ? That's what I do, but I also re-image the comp when performance is noticeably down.Quote:

Chris you are an sysadmin i asume from what you have in your sig. i would say this is your passion, mine is to just use the pc. i did used to have a passion for how it worked and how to make it better but distraction has taken me from that point and i much prefer to plug and play so to speak !!
i used to be a car mechaninc and i still have a passion for cars however i don't like fixing my own very much. i don't mind the challenge of finding a fault when a mate has a problem but i don't activly seek to assist anymore.

The transformer sits outside on the pole feeding not only your house but also the surrounding houses (assuming you live in a neighborhood). Do you shut off the main breaker just to go to bed at night?Quote:

You mean the capacitors in the PSU's, PSU's don't have transformers in them, just capacitors and resistors which are extremely safe, unless the capacitor is exposed to open flame but that would be because something else in the house caught fire and the fire spread to where the computer(s) are/is.Quote:

my house supply is 240 volts. when i plug in my computer the Kettle lead goes in to the rear of the pc. in turn the PSU "transforms" for voltage from 240V to 12v that is why it's a trasnformer.
i have a transformer in my mobile phone charger. and some of the LV lighting in my house use trasformers.
I actualy work in the electrcity industry and i understand you point however anything that reduces the voltage of a supply is known in the UK as a transformer. we have large sub-stations that contain transformers these recieve 410V and reduce the supply to normal housholds to 240V i beliver that is what you are refering to.
These trasnformers generate a great deal of heat and can cause fires although the risk is small a risk still exists and that is not acceptable as i have kids at home.

Ah, now we've reached a point where we understand each other. Granted I'm not in the electrical industry so I don't know everything I'd like to, but I did take 12 electrical classes a couple years ago that were based on House wiring, electric motors and circuitry so I know a few things. Here in the US my classes and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) book referred to transformers as the use of fluid to step down/up the voltage in an electric circuit, which are these guys:Quote:

The one's in appliances (computers, coffee makers, etc..) and most machinery that use dry capacitors and resisters (both of which are reliable, safe and explosion free) are simply voltage converters but aren't labeled as a transformer for whatever reason.
Plus over here the typical voltages are 120v (houses, businesses, etc), 240v (factories, farms, etc) and 480v+ are for much larger applications and aren't found in residential areas. Since you have a house with 240v and your computers use dry capacitors and resistors you don't have to worry about them exploding when the pop, though when one does go, you have a funky smell to air out (I've fried one or two).
The capacitors I deal with are the dry and oil based ones for 240v lines, but those are the ones on the motors to the fans and belts across the street on the farm in the grain bins, elevator legs and corn/bean dryer.
I know what you're getting at with the kids at home thing, I've always gotta keep an eye out for my 5 year old son when we're working with the big equipment on the farm.

i think it happened discussing letting defrag run overnight, and fears of computer induced fires
