There is no way I'm doing this on VM anymore - it's that slow. :eek2:
I'm going to have to find a spare PC for testing this thing.
i agree, it is slow.Quote:

There is a know issue with Windows 7 pre-beta on VM. I bet its still unresolved. Let me look at past emails to see what was the exact issue was and any solution.Quote:

Install this update to resolve live and recorded TV issues in Windows Media Center, recorded TV playback issues in Windows Media Player, and MP3 file corruption issues in Windows. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. This update is provided to you and licensed under the Windows 7 Pre-Release License Terms.
That may fix Media Center but I'm afraid it won't improve peformance.
VMWare, VPC or (whatever emulator could be) are all notoriously slow.
Nope, not to improve performance but if you are wanting to use media center features you would want it installed.
Still searching trhrough thousands of emails. I am getting close.
Yay! I finally got Win 7 installed on the VMWare Server after having to manually change the location of the cd/dvd drive. Still don't know why the server can't detect the correct drive automatically. Previously encountered the problem here:

On a bit of a side note I just enountered my first Win 7 error:
Quote:
Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation source is accessible, and then restart the installation.
Have you tried any vb.net apps yet?Quote:

Remember that this is a Beta 1 and not a RTM so there will be many bugs. You should have seen all the bugs in the pre-beta release given out at the PDC.
In the PDC preview version the slowness may be due to rendering WPF in a VPC without hardware rendering turned on. Using Hyper-V can improve performance on Hyper-V enabled systems. See this blog post on HAL - http://blogs.technet.com/tonyso/arch...n-your-vm.aspx. So using this technique may help your Beta 1 performance when run in a Virtual PC Machine.
LOL! Between the install of Vista and the install of Windows 7 nearly 1/5 of my hard drive space is gone.
Just noticed that i only have 50gigs left :(. and thats between XP and Windows 7Quote:

You did read the required specs for both VPC and Windows 7? lol
Told you to install on a spare PC. *sniffle*
I have an extra hard drive (nearly 200GB) for that!Quote:

That extra partition for the system files is a smart idea! At least you do not have to worry about deleting system files by accident.
I am actually going to buy an external HD for my music, since i have so much.Quote:

No Hyper-V here, I'm using Vista32 as the host OS.
The Win7 Beta x32 runs quite acceptably under VirtualPC here. Then again I have an Intel Quad Core with the hardware virtualization enhancements. Not too bad for a year old ($400 USD) system... but I did find a really great deal on it. The 500GB hard drive helps too. Yep, it sure was a steal!
Should have bought two, but they didn't even know they had this one until I made the guy climb a ladder and dig through the stock.
Have I tested any VB.Net programs? What's this VB.Net of which you speak? Would it run well on a Quad Core machine? :p
 I have the option of buying a 1TB drive if I wish! I just declined last time my dad asked because I have only used about 3GB of the drive I have.Quote:

I dont know if anyone has posted a public link yet, or if you all just got it through your MSDN subscriptions, but the public BETA download can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...-download.aspx :)
I'm going to install it on VPC tonight :)
Oh and to answer Athiest's question earlier about whether or not upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 would be possible - Yes definitely! MS have always said that they want to make the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 as seemless as possible and that whatever you have working on Vista should work on Windows 7 (unlike XP -> Vista)
Just found this interview discussing the changes in the kernel of Windows 7 - quite interesting :)

If I install Windows 7 on a vm, is there still a chance of it messing up my computer?
no thats the whole point of a VM, its a totally separate entity. You can think of it as just having an extra computer sat next to you and working on that :)
I watched that yesterday too. Quite good. :)Quote:

Just make sure you actually install it on the vm and not your actual system then you will be fine! :lol:Quote:

One thing that occurs to me is that VPC is not supported on Vista Home but will usually install and run there if you push ahead. Remember, it isn't supported so there is no guarantee.
VMWare is the other main virtualisation app so be sure to try that if VPC wont work
If your system cant support a type of VPC then you may not have a very good experience. Just to keep in mind.
On the lighter side, we bring you...

Just resize your HD using partition magic by about 50gigs, then install win 7 from the desktop onto that new partition.
lol last time I used partition magic my PC blue screened at bootup and it took me about an hour to fix :(Quote:
