Er, right, that must be all my pro-Bush comments that make it appear that I think governemnt knows best... er .... right....Quote:

Are you still talking about me? Or have we switched to someone else, because scrolling back I explicitely mentioned how nice the Americans where... I think you might be going a bit mad old chap... :ehh:Quote:
And it certainly has nothing to do with your distaste for America, Americans, and the opinions Republican Americans.
Er, totally lost with this one.. what are we talking about? Afghanistan or Iraq? So now no one can post comments on anything America does unless they're American? Is that what you are saying? Or unless they agree with you?Quote:
Yes, that's right, it's all about your opinion of a conflict that your country has absolutely nothing to do with.
Again, lost... totally :ehh:Quote:

This was a fairy entertaining discussion. I notice that as soon as SD mentioned that America isn't the envy of the world (it isn't, you know, although as a Brit I am quite jealous of your weather), he immediately became characterised as ill-informed commie liberal pinko anti-American scum (I'm paraphrasing) by the perma-rage brigade. Strangely, that doesn't gel at all with the posts of his that I've read. Presumably the ones he makes that support homer13j's rather rabid views on him all get moderated out of existence for being un-American...? :ehh:
ID, you can have our F5 tornados, which are one of the few weather phenomena unique to the US.
You have proper seasons in lots of places - sunny summers and snowy winters. That has a certain appeal compared to our rainy summers and rainy winters.
Yes. In fact, where I am we have sunny summers and snowy winters within two hours of each other for most of the year.
I am sure there are a lot of people out there that don’t like America. It’s quite obvious from a lot of the posts that I have seen. However I was speaking in terms of standard of living, not in terms of being the best place to live or even having the best political system or best anything. For some reason when you actually say something good about America a lot of people get all bent out of shape and love telling you all the things they think is wrong or bad about the US.Quote:

Aren't they the same thing..... you specifically said that the US standard of living was the envy of the rest of the world..... I merely pointed out that you were mistaken.Quote:

I suspect it only happens when you claim things about America that are quite obviously incorrect, this isn't because you've said something good about the US, it is because you have said something incorrect. This is just the same as me claiming that Canada has the largest Navy in the world, when in reality we have three rubber inflatables, a converted fishing boat and a rather testy swan called George. I would fully expect people to point out my glaring mistake.
Not at all. Invading other countries, sending bombing raids into foreign countries (Pakistan? Syria?), holding people without trial and actively supporting torture.... they're the things that make you an ignorant criminal warmonger.Quote:

Just out of interest, where did either SD or I say that we didn't like America or Americans? As it happens, I've known many Americans in my life, and I've liked the vast majority of them. Overall, if asked, I would definitely say that I like America. However, one of the things I don't like is the assumption by many of you that we're all envious of you. The inference there is that you are somehow superior to everyone else, and that's obviously not going to sit well with most people. If I said that the UK was the envy of the world, that we had the best system of democracy and the highest standard of living, I've no doubt you would take exception to it. Why are you so surprised when we do the same?Quote:

Sounds like life in the Scottish Highlands. I miss that. :(Quote:

I think non-Americans are far too sensitive sometimes when it comes to Americans talking about their own country in a good light. They mistake it for arrogance or bravado when usually it’s just that they are happy living where they are, just like a lot of other people are happy where they are.

I resent that characterization.Quote:
