Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
You should really start using Virtual Server then. Makes it super easy to have a brand spanking new installation at any given time to test things out. I have about 20 VMs on this machine alone.
However I do have 3 physical machines (one is a laptop) in my office here, and we have a total of about 20 machines throughout the entire office here.
I actually only run Vista on the laptop. When I build my next PC (once SSD drives get a little cheaper) I will run Vista exclusively.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
some people think so, but I have not had any real problems with vista at all to be honest. I've had this laptop for about a year and a half, and it runs Vista without any issues at all.
The only major problems I have actually seen with Vista, were with XP to Vista upgraded machines. Mostly Dells.
Also, when I said that, I did not mean I won't have XP available at my fingertips, I just mean for my day to day usage, I will run Vista on my main production machine.
Vista SP1 added some extra fixes and stability that fixed the few annoyances I had.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I run Vista exclusively...hear this and be amazed: its the 64 bit version.
It works like a charm :thumb:
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yeah, we also have an x64 vista box here in the office. No issues there either.
Sure if we plug in the 15 year old dot matrix parallel printer, it may not work, but I never expected it to.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yeah. With a little help from a friend, I found a "hack" (basically just uninstall 2 specific updates from the computer) that removes Vista x64's check for signed drivers (I dont really know what to think about the signed drivers thing in Vista x64...). I had to do it because of my recently purchased microcontroller programmer.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yea, sometimes, getting signed drivers is impossible for industrial hardware. It's totally idiotic of Microsoft to completely remove the ability to disable (permanently) the requirement for signed drivers.
Don't even fool around with the 32bit version. It's garbage compared to the 64bit one. Vista X64 + 4gig RAM is "the" way to go from what I've been told. It's snappier and faster than XP ever was.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Incidentally, has anyone else had a problem with the bootstrap of Framework 3.5 SP1 the upgrade tries to install? As I said, it was totally broken for me. I'm busy building one from scratch similar to what I did with 2.0 SP1

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Here were my experiences with SP1 so far:
VM XP SP3 with VS 2008 RTM - Installed fine
Vista x86 on laptop with VS 2009 RTM - Installed fine
Production box with XP pro - Told me I needed to run some cleaner utility first, and directed me to the downlod page. Ran that utility, worked fine, then ran SP1 update, however never got past a certain point, and I had to cancel it. Never actually cancelled, so I had to end task and reboot. I then tried the install again, and it went fine without a hitch.
There are a few blog entries, especially 1 or 2 from MS folks about some of the common scenarios they are seeing for failure, as well as solutions to those issues.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I installed it and it fixed that problem I had, also why is this much smaller than the beta?
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
likely the beta contained ALL Versions, and the one you got contained your specific version.
There are x86, x64, and IA64 builds of the framework

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I just wish the SP fixed the memory usage and ASP.NET parsing.
I start up an APS.NET project in 2008 and within a few minutes it's using upto 200MB. If minimize it, the memory will usually drop to 7 MB or so, but not after I've been running it for an hour or more.
Then there's the slow ASP.NET parsing. I try to edit anything in code view (HTML) and I am constantly getting delays and if sometimes the code just randomly shifts when in split view mode. Once, I clicked on a tab in design view and it blew out my entire HTML formatting and the page quit working.
Other than that, SP1 installed easy as pie.....mmmm, pie!
On a side note, Virtual Machines are great. I've been thinking of building a new PC with 8GB, maybe 16GB of memory and 2 Quad Core CPUs running Vista64 just to see if I can run multiple VMs at the same time and VS2008 a bit quicker. Although this may be overkill, just to be able to tell my friends I have this setup would be sweet, even if I can't use it to it's full potential.
My current PC is only 3GHz with 4GB, which inly leaves 1.5GB memory for a VM.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Hello,
I clicked on the link to download the service pack. Current I am using VS 2008 Team System. I don't have Team foundation server.
I have these options to download.
* Visual Studio 2008 SP1
* .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
* Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions with SP1
* Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server SP1
Which link will I need to download. Are the VS SP1 and .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 separate downloads that have to be installed.
As I am using Team System do I just need to download the VS Team System?
I have read the documentation but just want to be double sure before I download.
Many thanks,
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Visual Studio 2008 SP1 sounds like the one you want.
I also use VS 2008 Team System (but not on foundation server) and that is what I used.
Note that VS2008 SP1 also installs .NET 3.5 SP1, but not the other way around.
The only reason they have the standalone 3.5 SP1 download, is simply because not everyone who wants the framework service pack is going to have Visual Studio, but everyone that has visual studio 2008, needs the framework SP in addition to the IDE SP, so they are together in that update.
Obviously the express edition speaks for itself.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Thanks,
that cleared that up.

Signed drivers is a Local Policy Object that you can turn on or off.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Is there rob in x64? I know there is in x86, but x64 is supposed to have extra safe guards in place.
You can actually modify the boot loader to bypass the checks
http://chris123nt.com/2007/04/28/driver-signing-in-x64/
but I didn't know there was a policy option in x64 to do it.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Not sure if it is different but I am still running 32 bit so I cant say.
Probably will upgrade it to 64 bit next time I reinstall (probably next year).

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I finally managed to install the service pack after having reformatted my pc...
Now I have a question: I've read that there would be a new Office 2007 Ribbon tool available, but I can't find it anywhere...
"Visual Basic and Visual C++ components and tools (including an MFC-based Office 2007 style ‘Ribbon’)"
I thought maybe it was only for C++ so I created a new C++ project, added a winform but still no ribbon to be seen...
I tried searching for it in the 'Choose Items' dialog (rightclick on toolbar - Choose Items...) and filtered for "Ribbon". That gave me a list of ribbon controls (buttons, togglebuttons, checkboxes, gallery, etc..) but still no Ribbon control...
Where the heck is this tool? I'd just like to see how it works; I already used one from a third party control but it was a pain in the *ss to customize so I was hoping this was a bit better...
Also, is it only for C++ or is it for VB aswell?

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
MFC is a set of libraries for unmanaged C++. When you say you created a C++ project and "added a winform" it suggests to me that you created a managed C++ project, which uses the .NET framework.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Ah thank you for the notice good sir! This is a direct link to the VS 2008 SP1 downloader.

To be honest I have no idea. I don't know anything about C++, I just wanted to take a look at the control.
So it's not available for VB?

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Has anyone had any problems installing VS2005 and VS2008 on the same OS?
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
nope. I have VB6, VS 2003, VS 2005, and VS 2008 all on the same XP machine.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I had 2005 and 2008 on Vista without any problems.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Does anyone know if the date picker control was included in this release? I know a datagrid finally made an appearance....
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
with regards to what? I can only assume WPF since WinForms has had those controls for a long time. I don't think so. I have not seen a WPF date picker control in SP1.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yeah sorry, I was thinking WPF, but I didn't write it.....glad you're a mind reader!
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
you can host WinForm controls in WPF windows though, so that is the best work around for now.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Does anyone know when SP1 will get released via wsus?
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
hI
I'm downloading the VS.2008 SP1 iso file
what this file contain?
because I am using VS.2008 pro on my computer, and I want to install sp1
thanks
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
well with an ISO you will either need to burn it to disc, or mount it on a virtual drive via software.
But if its the VS 2008 SP1 iso file, then I would think it is safe to say it contains SP1 for VS 2008. There aren't different SP1 versions for different VS2008 versions.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
thanks
But I want to know the ISO file contain VS. 2008 sp1 or sp1 for VS.2008
because I am using dial up connection and the ISO file size is 800mb !!!
very big for me.
thanks again

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I dunno man, I can tell you that this link definitely IS the correct one, I can't say about the one you downloaded. It sounds like it is, but it may be overkill (like it may .NET 3.5 SP1 updates for all CPU flavors (x86, x64, IA64) when you only need one of those.)
This link is the download for the installer that should look at your installation, and ONLY download what is needed
