run a registry scanner. I bet you're missing SOMETHING. When i can run registry cleaner on a fresh install and find fifty problems, there's something wrong. Mac's system is much better. Every program has it's own dependencies in it's own directory. Uninstalling is merely deleting the directory.
Is it about that time of month for you? Or are you just hard of hearing? Because I could have sworn I said I can't remember EVER having a registry problem on XP. Considering I actually use almost every program I've installed, I'd probably have figured out if one of them was bow'd up because of a registry problem.
The last time I had a registry problem was when I installed Windows ME. While troubleshooting, I discovered that the root of the problem was that I had installed Windows ME.
Wow, that was a god-awful piece of crap.
Yeah, probably 142.7% of problems encountered on WinME can be traced back to WinME... oh how I hated WinME.
I never actually had problems with WinME, either, but then, some of us are just gifted.
While that was meant in humor, I think there is something to it. I have worked for two people who seemed to destroy computers through no fault that I could identify. One of them was using a Mac, but that was back in the dark era of OS6 and 7, when Mac stability was a lie perpetuated by the fanatics. They're mostly stable now, as far as I can tell, but then again, so is XP, and I can play lots more games.
A well-maintained XP is almost perfectly stable, aside from the occasional virus, but that's easily avoided too. Reformat/reinstall every 9 months or so, keep the system clean, and it'll stay very much alive.
that is exactly my point. XP doesn't exactly make it obvious that it's got registry issues. It just slowly starts taking longer and longer to boot. I just reinstalled xp myself because of this. After 9 months the system was taking three minutes to boot (now it takes 25) and it would take 30 seconds or so to open a program up the first time. Subsequent openings were instant. Also wouldn't recognize my UPNP devices, therefore limewire & emule were broken.
Oh, and this system's never had a virus or trojan on it. It works great again since the reinstall. I hope i don't have to reinstall again after 9 months. Backing up 100gb of data is a pain in the ass. (i am aware i don't have to, but i had to in this case to remove some partitions).
Hmmm, my boot slowdown is entirely due to a known bug in my antivirus program. Other than that, I have been running for a couple years, and haven't seen any noticeable degradation.
Mac OS used to suck, and it will again. Give it time. They got a major shot in the arm when their old system became so hopeless that they abandoned it and re-built on a Unix base. No Windows OS has ever truly gotten to do that, and it has suffered for it. Sometimes you just have to clean your windows.

yeah i missed it also :( Anyway, i never had any problems out of winME either. Probably the best OS based directly on DOS Microsoft made. If you did manage to get some kind of regsitry corruption, it had the first version of system restore.
Gates' Paradox (aka the MS software release policy):
In a sealed room, place a man (or preferably a Mactard if there is one left in the dungeon) in the room with a Vista PC. Also place in the room a copy of the software that is undergoing final tests.
Before locking the man in the room, give him a loaded revolver and instructions to install and use the software.
Upon the PC detecting that the software has been installed and is running correctly, the PC will self-destruct, releasing toxic gas into the room.
Then go to lunch.
When you return open the door (while wearing breathing aparatus, of course). At this point you will know if the software is ready for shipping because of the gas present in the room. If however you find nothing but a suicide then we have still increased our share of the computer market. Hurrah, ship it.
