Well, it's good that you believe in truth in advertising. I have a friend who got the surgery, and it worked perfectly. I can certainly understand the appeal. I only buy the cheapest sunglasses, since I can't keep from breaking them. If I had to pay serious money for them, it would get a bit steep.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
Last time I poked about the LASIK scene, it was running a good $5k for the surgery. I... can't afford that. Nowhere close. In about half a year, I should be out of debt... then my two priorities become a new computer and saving for surgery. By the end of the year, if I'm very lucky...

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I wore glasses until 11 days ago. That is when I got PRK surgery (like Lasek/ik). Fun, fun, fun! Nothing like the smell of lasers burning your eyes....

Yes, but how does that make you feel?

At the time a bit nervous as anyone should be when they are about to have someone slice/scratch their eyes and then burn them with a laser. However, by the time you smell the burning, the procedure is pretty much over. My actual surgery was likely under 5 minutes. The laser part that everyone is talking about was 17 seconds in one eye and 22 in the other. That's fast.
I'm happy to share the place I used (they are both national (US) and reputable). Send me a PM. The initial consoltation is free. One other Lasek place that I visited to get a price quote had one of the eye doctors vacuming the floor and cleaning up. :eek2: I decided I didn't need a price quote from them.... I'd reather pay a little more if necessary and get a doctor whose primary job is running lasers and working with eyes.....
All in all - it is seeming to have been worth the cost. It will be a few weeks before my vision is near perfect, but right now it seems to be as good as it use to be when I was wearing contacts.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I wear glasses. I had an accident in 1999 which fractured my eye sockets among other things. Since then my vision is no longer 20/20 :o

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
5 grand for the surgery? daaamn.
Looks like I'm wearing glasses for life, since contacts annoy the hell out of my eyes.

Most places give a life time guarantee for that price, so if you need your eyes fried (fixed) again, you can get it done. Price out contacts and solution for 25 years (and/or frames and lenses) and all the sudden the "incremental cost" of the surgery isn't as bad as it initially seems.

Come to the UK - it is between £300 and £500 per eye here. :)

We have adds that state $299 per eye; however, that is to get you in the door. Price it out and see what it really costs and I bet it is a lot more....
Of course, you can buy glasses at the store for $4.99 too.... but they don't exactly do what you need to get your eyes right....
:D

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I would like that kind of surgery! But I guess I would never dare :(

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I would. And will. Because I'm sci-fi like that. I like the ideas of lasers. :D

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I've heard you can turn a maglite flashlight and a blu-ray laser into something capable of burning pinpoint targets...
DISCLAIMER: You did not hear that from me.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
Well, I finally gave in to the nagging :ehh: , nagging  , nagging  , nagging  , nagging  , today and had an eye test. No problem peripheral, colour, medium and long range vision, but need reading glasses. After a battery of tests, the optician finally lifted a thingy away from my eyes, held up a card and:
Optician: "Can you read the bottom line ?"
Me: "Nope"
(Optician puts thingy back over my eyes, presses a few buttons and holds up card again)
Optician: "Can you read it now ?"
Me: <removed by admin> !!!!!"
Optician: "I'll take that as a YES. I also take it you're a bus driver."
Optician: "Never wear them for anything other than reading a newspaper when you're blocking 2 lanes and showing NOT IN SERVICE on the bus"
Me: "I take it you drive a car"
I pick up my specs tomorrow. Maybe I'll finally be able to see the characters printed on mobos.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
You should just get your windshields replaced with huge convex lenses. This way everything is visible to you, all the time.
