Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
I'd have to say that programming is more about creativity than anything else. Consider art. If you can't draw, then you won't be able to make really nice pictures. Nobody can truly teach you how to draw. They can show you different tools, and tell you how to use them, but if you can't picture how to put pen to paper and have a tree emerge, then you will draw one sucky tree. The same is true with coding. You can learn all the basics, about conditionals, loop controls, etc., but if you can't visualize how to put the things together to create the final program, then you won't ever do it. That's why I gave up on graphics programming. I simply realized that I was such an inept artist that I couldn't figure out how to use the tools right. I could understand that a certain transform would rotate an object by a certain amount, but I couldn't decide whether I should rotate the object or not, and even if I could, I sure as heck couldn't draw the thing. My avatar is probably the best piece of art I have ever produced, and most people probably don't even know what it is.
Some people have it, some people don't.

Those who can - do.
Those who can't - teach.
Those who are delusional about their ability - manage.

I'm not in the least bit delusional about my ability, I am dreadful. However I can't stand the idea of teaching in academia as they never have any real world experience. Besides, managers earn more :D
-
Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
Not true. Typically, consultants make more then managers.
-
Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
Which should never happen. I was a consultant before, and I didn't make even remotely the salary that my boss did!
Though, now being a full-time employee, we have a few consultants here, one earning my annual salary in 3 months!!!

Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
Those who can, do.
Those who can't, are promoted to management. This is so that those who can, can actually get stuff done.

Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
And, is it just People with Frisbees?
What about People with Horseshoes or Baseballs?
-
Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
Those who "caught" the frisbee reference (and it's just frisbees, no horseshoes no baseballs).... we're showing our age.... it means we're slightly older than those who "Want to Play a Game?" .... ( I got both)... if you didn't get either reference.... ZeroCool might know... then again, he maybe too young for those references.
Side note: No frisbee tossing, or playing TicTacToe while at DefCon 1 has ever made me want to get into programming.

Have you ever seen a programmer character in a movie or on a TV show that wasn't actually a hacker of some type? :ehh:

The main character anyway - and I think he did get laid.

Nice try but they were hackers because they used the 'Superman III' virus to steal money from their company.

What are you doing, Dave? I don't think you should become a programmer, Dave.

Jab noted - just cause I don't waste time anymore giving free code to people who can't use a search feature doesn't mean you should stop.

This is only because they are usually paid per sale (commission), whereas a manager gets a regular salary but sometimes with a bonus (depending on company policy)
I know that here consultants to get more than managers, BUT managers get more when taking their quarterly bonus into consideration

Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
Thanks all of you guys. You said that math is not the really important thing in programming the most important is logic but what if i also weak when it comes in logic. How i can digest all the parameters, classes, methods etc. that im studying in a fast way. Specially in .Net. If i have a money what is the best books should i buy? just like the level of books (Simple,Hard,Complicated) .... and if i dont have a money what website i can get lots of samples, documentation, brief explanation everthing that i want to know. Coz i start in VB.Net right now if i can say im now good in VB.Net, i would like to switch in C programming.
[PS]
Well i bought a 3x3 Rubics Cube .. Its fun i can build 1 color .. just one :)

Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
I believe it's been mentioned before.. pick a simple task, and just go. Some basic action-reaction programs are fun stuff... make a label that moves to the mouse when you click on the form. Simple stuff... oh, and by the way, that would be about 4 lines of code... one to handle the event, two to change the label, one to close the handler. Very easy stuff. Gradually move up... make the label actually glide to the mouse. Maybe have it change what it says as it moves.. maybe change color! Two labels next! Just keep building it more and more complex, but remember to start at the bottom so you learn your way up. We're more than willing to help if you get stuck.

Re: Dreaming to be a programmer
>>math is not the really important thing in programming
Math is important. It helps build logic and problem solving skills, but in general you only need to know the relevant parts of math for the application you're building. It's better to have a strong mathematical background than to have little experience in math.
