Quote:
Back in the year 1936, people born in 1892 were able to make an unusual mathematical boast, a boast that people born in 1980 will be able to make at some time during the 21st century.
John Stuart Mill, the English philosopher and economist, would also have been able to make the same boast, had he noticed it.
Given that he was born in the 19th century, can you tell me in which year he was born?
2) Which country makes Panama hats?
Ecuador
6) The Canary Islands in the Pacific are named after what animal?
Dogs

In 1936, people born in 1892 turned 44, which is the square root of 1936. Years that are exact squares are rare enough: 422 = 1764, 432 = 1849, 442 = 1936 and 452 = 2025. The last of these does correspond to the same pattern for people born in 2025-45 = 1980, whereas 1849-43 gives 1806 as the only possible answer for a birthdate in the 19th century.
The "unusual boast" which John Stuart Mill could have made when he turned 43 (in 1849) was to have an age whose square was the current year.
I did not know that... :blush:Quote:

Black box, from my answer sheet, yes..orange...so they could find it.
As one comic stated, why don't they make the whole plane from the same material of the black box, then the whole plane would surive the crash.
The first question got me thinking about how to write a Encoder/Decoder. Here is mine
VB Code:
Option Explicit 'Text1 = Text to be encoded/Decoded 'Text2 = Output 'cmdDecode = Command Button To Decode 'cmdEncode =Command Button To Encode Private Sub cmdDecode_Click() Dim iLoop As Long Dim i As Long Dim iLen As Long Dim sOut As String Dim strLeft As String strLeft = Replace(Text1.Text, " ", "") iLen = Len(strLeft) i = 1 While Len(strLeft) > 0 i = i + 4 Checki i, Len(strLeft) sOut = sOut & RemoveLetter(strLeft, i) strLeft = Replace(strLeft, " ", "") Wend Text2.Text = sOut End Sub Private Function RemoveLetter(strLeft As String, i As Long) As String RemoveLetter = Mid$(strLeft, i, 1) Mid$(strLeft, i, 1) = " " End Function Private Sub cmdEncode_Click() Dim sDecStr As String Dim sNewStr As String Dim iLoop As Long, sLet As String, i As Long, iLen As Long sDecStr = Replace(Text1.Text, " ", "") iLen = Len(sDecStr) sNewStr = String$(iLen, "-") Dim x As Long, iLet As Long i = 1 For iLoop = 1 To iLen sLet = vbNullString x = 0 While x < 5 iLet = i + x Checki iLet, iLen sLet = Mid$(sNewStr, iLet, 1) If sLet <> "-" Then i = i + 1 Else x = x + 1 End If Wend i = i + x - 1 Checki i, iLen Mid$(sNewStr, i, 1) = Mid$(sDecStr, iLoop, 1) Next Text2.Text = sNewStr End Sub Private Sub Checki(i As Long, iLen As Long) i = i Mod (iLen) If i = 0 Then i = iLen End Sub
