Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
I would love to see cars running on ~100% ethanol. None of this 75, 85 crap. It only takes a couple of minor modifications and any fuel-injected combustion engine can do it. Not only is it very environmentally friendly (only emission, besides steam, is carbon dioxide), it has a higher octane rating, and soon it will be cheaper than petrol.
Natural gas (LPG/CNG) is also more "green" than oil-based petrol but it requires more modifications and safe storage is more difficult than ethanol. Ethanol is really I believe the easy natural alternative to petrol and it has been proven to work effectively.
(I have no comment to make on US politics or military tactics :))
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
True as Bill has recently purchased 25% of a south western company that manufactures 85 or such. If Bills correct, as he usually is, then ethanol 85 will take over unleaded gas.
Sure we will still have regular gas but we wont be as dependant upon it, which is the common goal.
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
I guess it's valuable for the US as you kill to birds with one stone. Reduce foreign dependencies (oil) and decrease greenhouse emissions.
Biodiesel (vegetable oil) is also a great idea I think.
And for any anti-tree-hugger greenie-haters out there, there is another plus side too, apparently biodiesel smells like popcorn. And ethanol smells like vodka. Who wouldn't want that? :D
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
So you can get drunk off the fumes and eat popcorn all while driving and watching your DVD player...
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
Adds a whole new dimension to blinged up cars.

I would bet on us invaiding Iran and saving the world from their nuclear attacks but will the world be grateful? [sarcastic]But Noooooo! They only look at the surface of things. [/sarcastic] :(
Protecting Kuwait AFTER they were invaded is completely different from pro-actively invading a country the size of Iran. Bush is playing into the hands of terrorists as any other middle-eastern country will begin to believe they are next and that the US will not stop until they are all conquered.
Perhaps now Bush will take alternative fuel sources more seriously? It was interesting to watch a US documentary a couple of days ago where top government scientists have confirmed that the Bush administration altered findings on Climate Change.
Just look at the head honchos of your government! All have direct links with major oil companies (shareholders, executives etc) so they are obviously going to lose money should the truth come out, and THAT is why Kyoto was ignored by Bush. Not because it would affect the US economy (it will affect EVERY economy) but because it would reduce their bank accounts. Such is politics I suppose

Hmm,... I need money so perhaps I should go into politics then. :D

Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
If we switch to ethanol, it better not be 100%. Better make it denatured, or somebody is going to think of adding an auxiliary fuel pump....you can imagine the rest (no more Kennedy jokes, please, that's old....until the next time).
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
So then its because of Kennedy that they regulate it at 85 :D

You are rubbish, everyone knows Russian these days. How else are we going to be able to order brides from russia (hinting to popular site you can guess the name of)...

I am young. Think about us young people that only know who Kennedy is because he placed some random guy on the moon and then got shot for it...:D Ohhh...no? Wasn't the same guy....ohh...well well...same decade at least....goes for me...

Because it was barely a question worth CC. If it has only asked what kind of c0d they have written in, then I would have concured. But this is not any event at all, unless going to school learning domain last names is school in England. We don't have that yet, we still hunt enigma codes...

100% bioethanol fuel usually refers to ethanol with a slight amount of vomit-inducing additive (that obviously has no adverse effect on the car).

Joking aside (mainly because I don't get the joke), it's regulated at 85 because that's the optimal ethanol/petrol mix for engines without a fuel primer or some sort of separate starter system. Ethanol burns hotter than petrol so it does not start very well on its own in cold conditions.
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
so then why dont other countries put as much effort into oil independance and research alternatives? True its part because they dont have the volumn of dependancy that the us has but still that doesnt mean they have to wait for someone to do it.
Screw the hybrid cars as the gas/electricity thing is just a fad. Ethanol is where the future is. Just ask Bill and he will school you on the reasons.

Because it costs a lot of money, people are afraid of change, and ethanol has had unfair negative publicity (In Australia, not sure about other countries).
We had an episode a year or two back where petrol outlets were adding up to about 15-20% ethanol into their fuel without warning customers. Very bad idea as it destroys carburettor fuel systems and washes oil buildups from petrol[1] into the fuel filter, thus clogging the engine. Most mechanics blame this on ethanol, not realising the reasons behind it; and it was all over the papers, in fact it was probably the first time (in this context) that the idea of ethanol as a replacement for petrol had really been in the public spotlight. So it had a bad name right from the start.
To effectively replace petrol, we'd need to ramp up mass production of grain (I think it's sugarcane, or corn, or something - forgotten what) that can be harvested for ethanol use. This takes a long time to set up and would cost a huge amount of money.
Also, there might have to be money spent on educational advertising as well to gain mass public acceptance before making the change. Particularly here in Aus. So there's another cost.
Once a system is in place, I have no idea how much it would cost on a regular basis. I think Brazil is the only country that runs most of its car fleet on ethanol. My guess is it would be about what we pay for petrol now, maybe cheaper once it's in mass production. Oil can basically only get more expensive.
I agree with you, people need to wake up and see that fancy hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid electric/petrol cars aren't the most logical step. Sure they look impressive but really how much time and money is it going to take to roll out brand new hyrdrogen car designs (or whatever) for the whole world before we run out of oil? Compare to ethanol where basically only the supply infrastructure needs to be modified. Cars can be converted in a day at the mechanics, say at their regular service.
1. - Oil is not pure, alcohol is. Petrol leaves small buildups through fuel lines - these don't affect the performance but if you start running ethanol through there it will have a cleansing effect, thus all the grime buildups end up at the fuel filter and clog it.
Re: [DISSOLVED] What language is this?
2. - Just change your fuel filter regularly.
