Aren't we talking about spin here?
But we can put a spin on anything here in chit chat :pQuote:
The Moon's rotational inertia has been exhausted, converted into geophysical change in the Earth and Moon. The Moon, being much smaller than the Earth, long ago dissipated enough energy to lose rotation so that its tidal bulges are now always aligned with the gravitational pull of the Earth. The Earth still raises a "tide" in the Moon but it is in a balanced, steady state now and does not stretch the rock any more -- there's no more spin for the Moon to give up.
Alright, in that case, Pluto and Charon have cancelled each others' spins out.
How long will the moon continue to revolve around the Earth?
We can correct that by attaching little magnets at slight angles :DQuote:

Then we can sprinkle iron filings in the space between those two objects and watch them dance. :afrog:Quote:

Earth's day will be a month long. When this happens, billions of years from now, the terrestrial month will be longer -- about 40 of our current days -- because during all this time the Moon will continue moving away.
In this future picture, any lunar colonists would then henceforth see just one face of Earth. You can imagine this setup by stretching your arm out and looking at your palm. Now twirl around. You're face and your palm stare at each other the whole time. If the United States happens to be on the back of your head, well, just think what people there do not see.

The upshot: One day your descendants, if they survive a swelling Sun and other cosmic and human perils, will have at least 960 hours to work with each day. On some nights, half the world will be able to stare up at a full Moon for what seems like days and days. Imagine the loony things they'll have time to imagine, the strange lore they might conjure.

Somehow I see Apple getting a new IPOD involved in this technology :pQuote:

I'd like to comment on this superconductivity bull****. Perpetual motion is actually about physical motion of something that actually has considerable mass. Just because the electrons are moving, that is not considered perpetual motion. Electrons are moving around atoms all the time. So, we are all either full of perpetual motion atoms, or electrons are not considered here...
I didn't realise the odd comment or two would result in numerous and wonderous explanations.
Maybe I should of started off with something simple, like, What is the answer to The Ultimate Question Of Life, the Universe and Everything?
er.... the answers 42 according to the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, but I'm sure that some of you had already worked that out.
But please carry on with your comments, as I find some of them to be hilariously funny and quick witted, mixed in with the more serious 'stuff'
If you say so.Quote:

How about the Earth moving around the sun? Is that massive enough?
er, my wife says thats massive! but I'm not sure what she's talking about?
Well "Esher" did make some blue prints of perpetual motion. So it must exist!
He's kept his schematics for a working perpetual motion machine at the top of his staircase...Quote:

Would you believe it, this appears to be on the lines that I was going on about
Thank god, I was beginning to lose hope that this thread would be resumed.
Isn't planetary orbits perpetual motion?
Wrong context.
Would you believe it, it doesn't work:-

Is this perpetual motion, or deja vu :pQuote:

Actually, there is no output energy... merely more g00nish behavior.
I beg to differ. John Lydon said that Anger is an energy, and this thread makes me angry. Rargh:mad:
i don't know how old that magazine was, but there have been ceramic-based superconductors in that temperature range since i was in grade school, and i am 34.Quote:
Only 6 years ago, the highest known superconductivity temperature
was very cold - around 30 degrees above absolute zero (That is Kelvin degrees,
and is also around -400 degrees Fahrenheit). Recently discovered materials
have brought that temperature up to about 125 degrees above absolute zero, or
around -230 degrees Fahrenheit
well since the universe wraps around on itself, every point in it is the center.Quote:

Re: Posing Question: Perpetual motion
Uh dude, the Earth is not the center of the Universe. (lol @ description )
Also, since Relativity states that all motion is relative, i can honestly say the universe revolves around me.
not only is the moon's spin still slowing down, but so is the Earth's, by a measurable amount each year. Angular motion produces gravitons which saps energy away. You also have an energy exchange from photons and space dust.Quote:
So the moon's spinning... still forever...
It is a simple matter to make a low-temperature oscillator that will in fact oscillate until you remove it from the icebox. All you need is a coil and a capacitor. This experiment was done on one of the older space shuttle missions.
Don't quote me out of context, Orwell. :)
And I'd like to apologize for my "tone" in the previous posts in this thread. I must have been going through a particularly bad phase at the time.
